Very disappointed. Almost 100 pages of the book are drawings that do not relate specifically to carving. Some look like children's coloring book drawings the others are OK sketches of animals that one could draw or find elsewhere. There is NOTHING in those drawings to illustrate any carving techniques, or how they would be carved. There are 3 pages of "animal reference photos". Umm I can find hundreds of similar photos by simply using the Internet. More useful would be examples of animal carvings in various stages of completion.I have only briefly glanced at the first 5 chapters, it does look as though there are some useful thoughts there, we shall see. Mostly I resent that over half the book is "filler". It looks as though she wrote 73 pages and realized that that was not long enough to be considered a book so cobbled together the aforementioned drawings and photos.
This is a very good introduction into wildlife relief carving. I have carved for years, but never did relief carving. The book offers very good instruction and then leads the reader through a step-by-step relief carving. Moreover, the lasting value of the book is the large number of wildlife patterns that can be used for ongoing projects. I highly recommend this book.
I purchased this book after reading other reviews and viewing the included picture templates from another web site. The book was exactly as I expected. The information concerning the use of carving tools gave me a better understanding of how to improve my carving skills and highlighted a few carving techniques I haven't read before. Great book for beginners. Full page templates. Easy and quick read.
This is a great book for an intermediate carver I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner starting out.
Wonderful book for the beginner carver...has lots of detailing, tips, and instructions. I recommend this book highly.
Based on the table of contents shown and the few pictures of the "cutting depths" for the buffalo, I thought this book would go into more detail about depths. WRONG!!! The line pictures and shaded pictures are good IF you can visualize how to layer your cuts.I am extremely disappointed in my purchase but won't send it back to Amazon as they did nothing wrong. I know I will never purchase another Lora S. Irish book on carving unless I can actually see what is in the book first.If you have the talent to know what areas should be cut to what depth, then I guess the pictures are worth it. BUT if you are a beginner looking for a HOW TO book on relief carving this certainly is not it.I will put this on eBay to get rid of it and try to recoup some of my wasted money.
Good for beginners.
This book has a lot of good ideas to practice relief wood carving. It does assume you have some sort of carving skills. It's a great reference book for my collection. I bought the book "used". The book looked "New". No markings at all throughout.
