Commune: Book 2 is a remarkable read, and even manages to improve on the solid first book in the series. And that's a tall order, as that one came charging out of the gates as a fresh, thoughtful take on the post-apaclyptic theme by rookie author Joshua Gayou. With his sophomore effort, Gayou ratchets up the storyline by digging us deeper into the personalities of several of the main characters, while continuing to advance the overall narrative of the "history" of this fictional community of survivors.Book 2 primarily expands the story of another of the commune's main characters, who was briefly introduced in the epilogue to the first book. Gibs is a former Marine, and we meet him and his hapless band of misfits as they struggle to survive amid the ruined cities of Colorado. There are several tense, violent, defining moments where hope seems all but lost, but under Gibs' will and perseverence they manage to press on. Eventually they make their way to the Jackson, Wyoming, and are taken in by the original settlers of the commune (whose establishment was the subject of the first book). Here, the narrative switches from run-and-gun survival against other groups of more ill intent, and settles into a procedural of planning and working toward their long term survival in a more secure, permanent place. There are some interesting solutions to the problems of housing, food, security, and yes even waste disposal. Gayou has thought of everything. This is where Book 2 continues with the satisfying breadth of theme and subject matter that was initiated in the first installment. Yes, we get plenty of action, plenty of Road Warrior style confrontations with the bad guys. But mixing in a healthy dose of real-world problems, and the clever solutions to them, helps with the immersion into the story. It lends a level of believability that is absent in the more cartoonish, all-gore-and-grim examples in the genre. And, gratefully for this reader, it also infuses an underlying sense of hope to the story. Yes, disasters happen, the group is fraught with setbacks, but ultimately we can see that they're laying down the groundwork for long term success. We're rooting for them.Which isn't to say the violence and action take a back seat. The story climaxes in an epic road-borne battle that rivals any I've read in the genre. This is the set piece that Gibs' entire story arc has laid the groundwork for. His colorful personality is matched by his battle-toughness, as he leads his ragtag group of scavengers against an overwhelming force of bad guys. Here is the red meat for hard core fans of the genre. But Gayou's talent is in weaving the id and the ego. It's not all just gunfire and explosions. He's put some real thought into many of the more basic questions of a post-apaclyptic world, and handled those subjects with skill. The aforementioned survival needs, and their solutions, are a case in point. But Gayou throws subjects into the mix that you'd never even think of, then forces his characters to figure out a solution. One such episode features a member of their own group, who goes off the rails in a way that I've never seen addressed in a story of this genre. Several themes come together in that one small corner of the story, such as the subject matter itself, the idea that the monsters a group of survivors must face can come from within as well as without, and also the moral struggle to figure out a just solution.Commune: Book 2, ultimately becomes more than just a post-apocalyptic narrative. It studies themes that break the norms of the genre, and therefore would be a satisfying read for even those who don't usually read such books. We see deep character studies, watch them grow and develop, some for the good and some not so. Gayou stress-tests them in a wide variety of situations to see what they do. And its fun to watch.Disclaimer: I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy by the author at no cost. I was only asked for initial feedback, though there was no requirement to post an official review in exchange for the ARC. However, I enjoyed the book so much that I gladly purchased it anyhow, and am proud to offer my thoughts in this review as a verified customer of the book.

Outstanding continuation! I listened to the first book and just couldn't wait for the second to come out in audio format so I immediately bought the e-book and so very glad I did! I felt very invested in the characters and just didn't want this book to end!Book 2 starts us out with Gibs and his clan, eventually bringing the 2 groups together. I really enjoy the back and forth with the telling from different character's points of view. It gives you a much better feel for the character and makes you view them far more intimately throughout the book. It's difficult to explain, but when you reach the portions with Fred you will know what I mean. This book brings us much more colorful language (which the author explains upfront) and quite frankly it would be an awful book without it. There is also some more details about the firearms, but since we are hearing about them through the eyes of a retired Marine, it makes complete sense. There are 'mistakes' made from a prepper standpoint, but given the group and their dynamics, they are mistakes that you would expect to be made. I have zero complaints about any aspect of this book.I am thoroughly enjoying this series and look forward to book 3 (possibly 4)! I'm also looking forward to the audiobook version of this one and will definitely be buying that as well since R.C. Bray really brings the characters to life and truly makes this book even better.

An absolute five-star-story. As much as I enjoyed Book 1, Book 2 was amazing. Getting into the head of a character hinted at in the first book was a real highlight. Again, I find Joshua's portrayal of military personnel being pretty spot-on. This is a man who's done his research. Awesome storytelling. This is just a really great story and certainly one of my favorite postapoc stories of 2017. I can't wait to read the third book!

I gave this book five stars because that was the highest rating. Brilliant writing. Brilliant, believable action, and true emotions. By far the best sequel written. Often, the second book is a filler that doesn't have much story. Gayou wrote a filler book that can stand alone. The story continues, trials happen, and people win or lose. Cannot wait for book three.

I really enjoyed both books in this series - right up to the ending of this one. If there isn't a third book, I'll be very disappointed; so far, I've seen no indication that the series will continue other than the very abrupt conclusion of this book. If one can go by the length of time between the publication of the first and second books in the series, then a third is overdue - I just hope it isn't an indication that there isn't going to be another book!

I liked the first book. The second book of the series BLEW THE GENRE OUT OF THE WATER!! I haven't read a book that I enjoyed this much in a long time. Some authors are able to tell a good story. Joshua Gayou draws you in and makes you feel like you are next to the characters witnessing the harrowing events as they are happening. Several times I wanted to yell out at the characters while I was reading, "Duck, Gibs, DUCK!!", "Don't stop Gibs, remember what Amanda said!", but I bit my tongue because I was by myself in a coffee shop and didn't want to look crazy. On the other hand, it's hard not to laugh at the funny parts.

This is a fantastic read ! I'm a big fan of this type of genre and the author does a great job of introducing you to all of the characters while keeping you in the dark about the mysterious Jake , only giving you snippets into his personality ! I found it hard to put this book down and am gutted I have to wait for the next book !Hi praise for Joshua Gayou ! I am a fan !

The story develops the main characters further, and adds new, likable ones to the mix. The storyline made this a one sitting book, and I loved it. I want to own the whole series in book form, since I read on kindle and then buy the books I love!

I had high hopes for this book and I'm not sure why. I also have Benjamin's Liquidation on the Chessboard, which he mentions in this book. Let me save you $20 and 250 pages of reading. You should simplify to a won pawn ending when you can. The end. Now I have to admit, I didn't read that book all the way to the end, so maybe it got better eventually, but I already know that you should simplify to a won pawn ending when you can, so I didn't see much profit coming from wasting my time on continuing with it.This book is similar. I read a little further in this one, but I'm also not going to finish it because, well, let me illustrate. Here is some advice from chapter 1 on playing openings. "...it is important not to rely too much on preparation. You must understand the strategies in an opening..." (p.13 and first page of the chapter). Number one, where have I heard that before? Number two, find someone who will explain those strategies to me. Most opening books are just lines and variations within variations, and that includes the ones that say you can play this opening from general principles. Believe me, I have a lot of them, and even the ones that say they will explain the strategies rarely do. (And you can't play openings from general principles unless you really enjoy coming out of the opening already lost!) Don't count on this book to be any exception. The gist: Don't prepare too much. Prepare just enough! Calculate. Don't be lazy. Do the work. Gee, thanks! Why are they keeping this stuff secret? (Oh yeah, they can make a lot more money off you if you hire them as a coach.)Most of Benjamin's advice on openings consists of 'white should have played this' or 'black should have played that.' And how are we to know that over the board? Well, you're supposed to have a plan. Really? I would never have imagined! And where does that plan come from? From preparation, of course. "Insufficient preparation can be worse than no preparation" (p.14). Write that down. There will be a quiz! Here's more advice. "Tactics can always be overlooked" (p.16). To prevent that, buy a "good book" on the opening. Play "through a lot of games on the database" (p.16). "There are so many opening 'questions' like this that you cannot possibly anticipate all of them before you encounter them. You can't simply plug in moves you know, because they may not fit when the position is slightly different. If one variable is different, you have to work out, either in prep or over the board, how it changes everything. ...apply your general knowledge and powers of logic to get through the opening" (p.16-17). And that's done OTB how? By calculation of course! You can't be lazy about that, we are cautioned. You have to do the work.I would have expected a book with a title like this to, maybe, give me some tips on how to do a better job of that. But no, there are none. Calculate. Don't be lazy. Those ARE the tips! "Having a good approach helps" (p.17). "Don't obsess about theory so much that you skimp on the fundamentals" (p.17). "If you find yourself in a situation where you can't access any plans from memory, you have to _do that work over the board_" (p.17-18). The last bit of that sentence is italicized as if it is some sort of grand revelation. Does that help you? It doesn't help me. And yet that's it. THAT is the kind of advice you will get from this book.Maybe I'm too weak to appreciate this book (1700ish). Or maybe I'm too strong (unlikely). Oh wait, I forgot! "Be alert." Maybe that helps. It doesn't get any better in the second chapter on endgames. "Good endgame play takes patience, appreciation of the initiative, and, above all, good planning" (p.37). Great! I can hardly wait for more detail on that. But there is none. Not that I saw. So I stopped reading after chapter 2. I have better things to do with my chess time. Conclusion: How dare they charge me $25 for this kind of pablum?! Save your money.

I am immediately going to study this book. It is my favourite chess subject. I met GM Joel Benjamin at Manhattan Chess Club. I had just finished my game in amateur section with Dore Sheppard and was doing a post mortem when 11 year old Joel walked by and said can I show you guys something I saw while walking by your game? He proceeded to show us many moves and variations all from memory and blew us away! It was over our heads and we knew we had just seen a chess genius!

Good learning style. Different but meaningful.

I really enjoyed this book. Joel touches on a wide variety of ills that plague me and (presumably) other non-GM level players, and has lots of relevant examples from his own games and from those of his students. Its fun to see some non-GM level games interspersed amongst Joel's clashes with other GMs, and the examples are always relevant. Recommended!

Review

From the reviews:"For many people dealing with statistics is like jumping into ice-cold water. This metaphor is depicted by the cover of this book … . full of excellent example code and for most graphs and analyses the code is printed and explained in detail. … Each example finishes with … valuable information for a person new to a technique. In summary, I highly recommend the book to anyone who is familiar with basic statistics … who wants to expand his/her statistical knowledge to analyse ecological data." (Bernd Gruber, Basic and Applied Ecology, Vol. 10, 2009)"This book is written in a very approachable conversational style. The additional focus on the heuristics of the process rather than just a rote recital of theory and equations is commendable. This type of approach helps the reader get behind the ‘why’ of what’s being done rather than blindly follow a simple list of rules.… In short, this text is good for researchers with at least a little familiarity with the basic concepts of modeling and who want some solid stop-by-stop guidance with examples on how common ecological modeling tasks are accomplished using R." (Aaron Christ, Journal of Statistical Software, November 2009, Vol. 32)"The authors succeed in explaining complex extensions of regression in largely nonmathematical terms and clearly present appropriate R code for each analysis. A major strength of the text is that instead of relying on idealized datasets … the authors use data from consulting projects or dissertation research to expose issues associated with ‘real’ data. … The book is well written and accessible … . the volume should be a useful reference for advanced graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and experienced professionals working in the biological sciences." (Paul E. Bourdeau, The Quarterly Review of Biology, Vol. 84, December, 2009)“This is a companion volume to Analyzing Ecology Data by the same authors. …It extends the previous work by looking at more complex general and generalized linear models involving mixed effects or heterogeneity in variances. It is aimed at statistically sophisticated readers who have a good understanding of multiple regression models… .The pedagogical style is informal… . The authors are pragmatists―they use combinations of informal graphical approaches, formal hypothesis testing, and information-theoretical model selection methods when analyzing data. …Advanced graduate students in ecology or ecologists with several years of experience with ‘messy’ data would find this book useful. …Statisticians would find this book interesting for the nice explorations of many of the issues with messy data. This book would be (very) suitable for a graduate course on statistical consulting―indeed, students would learn a great deal about the use of sophisticated statistical models in ecology! …I very much liked this book (and also the previous volume). I enjoyed the nontechnical presentations of the complex ideas and their emphasis that a good analysis uses ‘simple statistical methods wherever possible, but doesn’t use them simplistically.’” (Biometrics, Summer 2009, 65, 992–993)“This book is a great introduction to a wide variety of regression models. … This text examines how to fit many alternative models using the statistical package R. … The text is a valuable reference … . A large number of real datasets are used as examples. Discussion on which model to use and the large number of recent references make the book useful for self study … .” (David J. Olive, Technometrics, Vol. 52 (4), November, 2010)

From the Back Cover

Building on the successful Analysing Ecological Data (2007) by Zuur, Ieno and Smith, the authors now provide an expanded introduction to using regression and its extensions in analysing ecological data. As with the earlier book, real data sets from postgraduate ecological studies or research projects are used throughout. The first part of the book is a largely non-mathematical introduction to linear mixed effects modelling, GLM and GAM, zero inflated models, GEE, GLMM and GAMM. The second part provides ten case studies that range from koalas to deep sea research. These chapters provide an invaluable insight into analysing complex ecological datasets, including comparisons of different approaches to the same problem. By matching ecological questions and data structure to a case study, these chapters provide an excellent starting point to analysing your own data. Data and R code from all chapters are available from www.highstat.com. Alain F. Zuur is senior statistician and director of Highland Statistics Ltd., a statistical consultancy company based in the UK. He has taught statistics to more than 5000 ecologists. He is honorary research fellow in the School of Biological Sciences, Oceanlab, at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Elena N. Ieno is senior marine biologist and co-director at Highland Statistics Ltd. She has been involved in guiding PhD students on the design and analysis of ecological data. She is honorary research fellow in the School of Biological Sciences, Oceanlab, at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Neil J. Walker works as biostatistician for the Central Science Laboratory (an executive agency of DEFRA) and is based at the Woodchester Park research unit in Gloucestershire, South-West England. His work involves him in a number of environmental and wildlife biology projects. Anatoly A. Saveliev is a professor at the Geography and Ecology Faculty at Kazan State University, Russian Federation, where he teaches GIS and statistics. He also provides consultancy in statistics, GIS & Remote Sensing, spatial modelling and software development in these areas. Graham M. Smith is a director of AEVRM Ltd, an environmental consultancy in the UK and the course director for the MSc in ecological impact assessment at Bath Spa University in the UK.

I've read through the first 6 chapters during the past few days, and have quite enjoyed it -- it reads smoothly, almost like a novel; quite unexpected for a text written by multiple authors. There's even a bit of humor. I've worked a bit with mixed models in the SAS world, but needed to learn how to deal with them in R, and this book has turned-out to be rather better than expected in this regard (I'm really liking how mixed models are done in R as opposed to SAS). At first I thought the blend of topics covered a bit odd, wondering what the heck a "Generalized Additive Model" was and what it was doing in a book on mixed models, but it turns out that GAMs are really nifty and not too difficult to grasp and in fact appear relevant to problems I'm currently working on. The authors have a preference for working with the distribution of the data as given rather than attempting to transform it to an approximation of normality, and I'm coming to appreciate this as well. For an applied text, it has unexpected depths. Great book.

I really enjoyed this group's first book, Analysing Ecological Data, but this book is even better. The second book follows the style and format of the first book in that the authors explain the concepts in non-technical terms, but don't gloss over the important ideas. Moreover, they use real data sets that are quite messy and they show how these data sets can be analyzed through the numerous case studies in the text. All of the case studies are from published ecological papers or PhD theses. What makes this book even better than their first is that R code is included in the text and they carefully show how R can be used to help with the analysis and to construct the elaborate and beautiful graphics displayed in the text. If you're looking to analyze your own ecological data, you must have a copy of this book. It is an invaluable resource both for statistical methodology and for understanding how to use R with statistical models. These guys have done a spectacular job with this book and I look forward to future work from them.

This book is very good in both introducing statistical concepts and describing the R commands to implement those concepts. It is required, however, a relatively deep understanding of Linear Regression. I read this book from A to Z, however, each chapter is as independent as possible, and therefore it is possible to read the individual chapters. I did not try the code on the web page of the book yet, but I did type some of the examples and the code from the book works OK. In addition in the web site there is a set of instructions to install a package with all the code from the examples and updates on the R libraries and packages explained in the book. Each methodology explained in the book covers step by step both the statistical (and mathematical) details as well as the construction of the R code (including importing the dataset and formating of columns for later analysis). One of the most important "extra points" in this book is the use of a consistent methodology to approach the problem of modeling ecological data from a statistical point of view.My only complain is that there are lots (LOTS) of typos, nothing too serious (since I was able to catch them) but still, I'm a little disappointed, because a good reviewer should got those.

I am a plant ecologist. Even when I try to design simple experiments, it seems everything has autocorrelation (how did they do ecology in the past!?). So, I'm always using mixed models. This book is great on two fronts. First, it is an excellent "how to" guide for using mixed models in R. It gives you examples, output, and a roadmap to the code you need to write to do the analysis. Second, it explains the theory behind mixed models in a way that is easy to understand for a non-statistician. It walks you through what output means and the theory behind what R is doing, and the limitations of what R won't do.Every ecologist should buy this book.

Many applications in ecology clearly are not amenable to use of the general linear model due to violations of its assumptions. In fact, in most projects I work on, things like correlation among the errors, nonconstant error variance, etc., are the rule, rather than the exception. If you are looking for an applied text dealing with these types of situations with lots of examples, and demonstrations on analysis in R, then you should get this book. It does not delve into theory; there are plenty of other textbooks where you can fill in those details if you are interested. Rather, this book would be ideally suited for quantitative ecologists, biometricians, and statistical consultants who work in life sciences. Another nice thing is that the book does not assume you are an "R expert". Well done.

Many ecologists recommended this book and as I statistician I decided to give it a go. I have read a few chapters and they are quite interesting. I think the inclusion of new authors to this team improved the quality of their statistics. The concepts are good, and I follow a very similar philosophy than the authors in my consulting. However, I was missing some additional discussion in relevant topics including extensions on hierarchical models and other complex mixed models with several strata. The elements are there but not in the best form. I do congratulate the authors in adding some of those chapter with detailed examples and with code and data! This provides a great way to get the experience for the reader, and I am glad the editors accepted this approach. In summary, this book is a good start, but it should be complemented with other books, for example Littell et al. (2006) that is in SAS but provides great descriptions of concepts to a similar level.

This is a great book that I refer to on a regular basis. There is a sufficient amount of math, so that users have some background on procedures. There is a great collection of examples with R code so that procedures can be easily implemented. Most of the procedures use standard frequentist methods, though there is one example of a Bayesian analyses. Highly recommended for applied scientists who are comfortable with basic concepts of statistics and R.
