The reader walks with Kennan through the 1920‘s when, under the Rogers Act, the man in his young 20‘s enters the very first generation of a newly established class of professional, career officers of America‘s foreign service. The reader, with the young Kennan, learns to love Russian culture and history as the State Department sponsors his immersive graduate studies in Russian language and history combined with work-study programs in consulate offices. Kennan, like Dean Acheson, was present at the creation. Kennan underestimated his own power of influence, both at the end of World War II, the outset of the Cold War, and over the seventy years remaining in his life when a grateful nation kept seeking his counsel despite his seeking of scholarly refuge from the empyrean heights of the Advanced Institute at Princeton University. This work should be read in conjunction with the very profound work of Robert Beisner, „Dean Acheson and the Cold War“.

It would be next to impossible to read about the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union without George Kennan's name appearing. The man's containment argument carried the day in Washington D.C., helped our nation avoid war with the U.S.S.R., and, therefore, prevented needless deaths on both sides. For about three decades, I've always wondered why this guy? Sure, Mr. Kennan was acknowledged as a very smart person when it came to Russian history, but it's difficult to believe he was the only big brain kicking around D.C. that had a firm grasp of the Russian mindset as well as Bolshevism.Mr. Gaddis does an excellent job in, not only explaining Mr. Kennan's importance and how he became indispensable, but also the full measure of the man. Warts and all. The author rightly had concerns about taking on a biography about such a thin-skinned man while the dude was still alive. Mr. Gaddis explains the conditions which were put in place for him to attempt the biography. His intimate access to Mr. Kennan's boatloads of written arguments; the man's family, friends and foes; and most importantly exclusive use of Mr. Kennan's life-long personal diary culminates into not a gushy lovefest but a very balanced, absorbing biography. Mr. Gaddis's book certainly deserved the Pulitzer Prize. Like everyone else, Kennan had qualities that were admirable and other aspects of his personality that were either annoying or made him a good candidate for being hit on the side of the head with an iron skillet.The story is about a brilliant wonk whose ability to right cogent, poetic assessments that influenced policy makers is what separated him from the other bright bureaucrats. Man oh man, the guy rubbed elbows with the big guys; Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Bush 41, and Clinton as well as General MacArthur, Secretary of States George Marshall, Dean Acheson, and George Shultz. Then there's Robert Oppenheimer, Mikhail Gorbachev... look, my fingers are getting tired in listing all the power brokers. You get the picture. Also, his love of Russian history and culture and ability to speak perfect Russian made him a cut above the rest. At his core, Mr. Kennan had an oddly wonkish heart and the unstable emotions of your stereotypical artist. The man was completely, laughably clueless about contemporary American culture.In the week I was reading "George F. Kennan," not one person who asked me had any idea who he was. That's a shame. Mr. Kennan strongly believed that style was as important as substance. He joined the two and made himself into a valuable asset. Mr. Gaddis seems to have taken the same attitude while writing his Kennan biography and the result is an outstanding work which deserves a wide readership.

Gaddis is well know to have an Encyclopedic knowledge of the Cold War. He also had Kennan's blessings in writing this biography. Gaddis does an adequate job of reviewing Kennan's life - but then tends to be more of a perfunctory emotional quality to this work than should have been present with someone as dynamic as George Kennan. This is the official biography by the official biographer - but many of the qualities of Kennan's spirit seem to me missing. I strongly suggest that folk actually read Kennan to pick up these missing pieces.Gaddis though has written some fine work on the Cold War, although I strongly disagree with his take on the Truman Doctrine.

A terrific piece of scholarship and fine writing, exploring the life of the man who as much as anyone else, including President Truman, set the tone for American containment policy toward the Soviet Union. This is an important book, and a great choice of subject on the part of Professor Gaddis, preeminent Cold War scholar.

I've never been one to pick up a book about coaching soccer. Most of the ones I've ever taken a glance at are, "This is what you do. This is how you do it.". Dan takes it to another level; adding in personal stories and experiences, explaining how and why certain techniques work, and most of all, he doesn't bore you out by just throwing drills at you. I came to realize by the end of the book that his style of writing is similar to his style of coaching/training, progressive. He starts simple, giving you some background, giving you tools for the job, and easing you into some of the most basic yet beneficial drills. I'm truly impressed with this book. It didn't just teach and entertain me, it spoke to me.

Excellent book! Dan Blank does an awesome job of simply and logically breaking down the fundamental approach to a possession-based style of play. It's all fine to WANT to play this way...but how does a coach and a team actually go about EXECUTING it? That's what this book is about. Dan details the philosophy of possession-based play and stresses the importance of coach communication to players with respect to that philosophy - getting the "buy in" and commitment from your players. In a logical sequence Dan breaks down important principles like speed of play, support presence, passing angles, etc. and details how they can be taught to your players. He stresses the little things that make a big difference: playing with fewer touches, knowing "what's next", facing the right way and then playing the way you face, passing to the correct foot, receiving across the standing leg, etc. Dan provides an excellent group of "core" training exercises that expose players to technical and tactical repetition of possession principles. Not only does he provide great training exercises but more importantly provides coaching point emphasis for each exercise. What does a coach expect to see in these exercises and what are the coaching points to hone in on? I have coached a possession style for a number of years and I picked up many pearls from Dan's book, especially his use of "simple" terminology to communicate concepts to players. For example, I have always coached players to "know what you want to do with the ball before you receive it". That's a mouthful! Dan simplifies this by asking players the simple question, "What's next?" Good stuff! I really appreciated this book as it has helped me think more logically about how to coach possession soccer and it has helped me communicate important points to my players more effectively.

This is the 4th great title I highly recommend by Dan Blank. (IQ volumes 1&2, and Shutout Pizza are the others) If you are a coach or if you are getting this for a skilled tween/teen soccer player, this book will really help them reach another level (or more than another level) of play. The drills are well laid out and explained and the reasoning for every activity tells you why this is what you want to do. Many of the things he states in his books, I sort of knew, but his books not only explain it in a way that everybody can understand, they cover the finer points of what is needed too.

Dan Blank’s books are the best you can buy. After coaching for 10 years I picked up alot from this book? I have all his books and continually read them to keep good coaching ideas and good advice. Shut Out Pizza will teach you how much you DON’T know about defending. I coach 12-15 year old girls and will lend to the ones that really want to excell and they love them. They are not practice session books but great ideas on what to plan to make the best session to suit your needs. Thanks for these books Dan.

It's really impressive how the author can teach us in such an easy way. I have read his book "Happy Feet" and enjoyed a lot. The book is great, funny and very useful. You will find every single detail about this style of game, what to say to your players, when to give them coaching points, how to make the players buy your concepts about possession game and so on. I really enjoyed the book. Dan Blank is great!

I'm a Dan Blank fan! I coach a girls high school soccer team and love how these translate to my players! They really enjoy that these are written about girls their age playing their sport. As a coach, I like the readability of the book and how it goes from small concepts up to big-picture ideas. This book, Soccer IQ 1 & 2, and Everything Your Coach Never Told You are required reading for my varsity players.

I am a possession style coach and I am always looking for ways to open my players minds to what that means.This book really condenses everything necessary for good possession play into one place and provides good drills and progressions for developing your teams ability to hold onto the ball.The descriptions and diagrams are clear and well organized with coaching points highlighted for each.Whether you have been doing this a long time and are looking for new ideas or a rookie coach just looking for any idea at all this book will serve you well.

I really like Dan Blank's books. They are easy to read, and they pack a lot of information into a small package. This book has plenty of valuable tips related to making your team a possession team. I like this style of play, so I appreciate the advice and drills that are included in this book.

This really wasn't as good as her other books. The main people start having sex like right away almost as soon as they meet and that's not what im looking for in a historical romance I expect a little more lead in other than meet and jump right into it. It was still an ok book just not as good as others.

I enjoyed this book and thought it was a decent mystery/romance. The hero and heroine were likeable and make a good match for each other.This is a murder mystery in that Saidh, the heroine, has a cousin, Fiona, who murdered her husband on the morning after her wedding because he brutalized her and was going to do it again in the forest in the way to their home.Said knew her wedding night had been awful, having been in the next room and helped her cover up the murder.Saidh had seven brothers and was a tomboy, doing everything they did as they grew up. She knew how to protect herself and was intelligent enough to do a cover up that everyone believed.Unfortunately Fiona's next two husbands died so she was suspect when the fourth drowned.Said came to be with her cousin after the death. She swears she didn't kill him, she loved him, partly because he left her alone. Didn't want sex.The new laird of the castle is Greer, who inherits after his cousins death. He's immediately attracted to Saidh. She responds to him in a way she never has with a man. They marry quickly, which brings her brothers there.Then someone tries to murder Saidh. The rest of the book is spent trying to figure out who the murderer is, with the people you suspect not being it.Lynsay Sands is a prolific and good writer. She did an excellent job of keeping this reader guessing about the true culprit. She also writes a good sex scene, not salacious, uses good vocabulary for it and writes making it yummy but still in good taste. I also appreciated very much how all the main characters communicated well with each other. I get very sick of the books where the H and h's whole plot rests on one not communicating with the other. I'm SO over that idea.

4 starsThe third installment of Lynsay Sands' Highland Brides series features a character introduced in book 2: "To Marry a Highland Laird." Saidh Buchanan was among the single women invited to "woo" Campbell Sinclair (the hero of book 2), though her heart was never in it. She became fast friends with the woman who did win Cam's heart (Joan), and the book opens with Saidh leaving Joan's home after attending the birth of the couple's son to figure out what has happened to her cousin who just lost her 4th husband in so many years.Saidh was with her cousin Fenella 4 years ago when her cousin married for the first time; Saidh witnessed the abuse of his new wife, and while traveling the day after the wedding with the new couple, she found her cousin over her husband's body with the knife used to kill him. When Fenella explained that she had no choice, Saidh helped her cover up the crime and claimed bandits attacked them. That was the last time Saidh saw or heard from Fenella; she was shocked to learn that Fenella had not only been married 3 times since, but that all of those husbands died soon after their nuptials. As Saidh is the only person besides Fenella that knew the first husband's death was at her cousin's hands, she worried that she didn't know Fenella as well as she thought and is determined to get to the bottom of this black widow pattern.Greer MacDonnell has been a sword for hire since he could wield a sword, and now he has found himself the new Laird of Clan MacDonnell when his cousin Allen is found dead in an assumed drowning accident soon after taking a bride. When he assumes his new title, he finds a beautiful, if unconventional, lady that he is immediately drawn to and vows to make her his. Saidh is unlike any woman Greer has ever known --- she is a lady, yet she curses like a warrior and fights like one too. She shuns formalities, and she wears pants under her gowns so that she can ride astride. As the only girl raised with 7 brothers, Saidh has learned to hold her own and then some. Greer cannot help but be equal parts fascinated and attracted to her, and he soon plots to make her his new wife. But little does he know that there is an unknown entity within his own new castle who is plotting against the object of his affection.What I liked:--- As always, Sands delivers with some yummy steamy goodness!--- The main characters were likeable; Saidh was a different sort of heroine in a good way that added some humor and light to the story--- Minimal angst between the main characters --- I am not a fan of the "miscommunication" and other silly reasons to keep couples apart; there was very little of this involved in this story thankfullyWhat I didn't like as much:--- So first of all, a little Scottish history lesson: Greer is what the "G" in my user name stands for; it's my middle name (it was my paternal grandmother's maiden name -- she is a direct descendant of Clan MacGregor; Greer is one of the surnames used when MacGregor was proscribed as it is the feminine form of Gregor) --- it seemed odd to me that the main male character had what is considered to be a girl's name (especially at that time) since he was of no relation to the Scottish origin of the name--- While I enjoyed the mystery aspect, the final result left me a little disappointed SPOILER!! Lynsey Sands always writes with lots of humour, passion, lust, mystery, excitement and with memorable characters. This book was no exception.One character, Fennela, was such a pitiful soul, and yet she lost four husbands in four years under mysterious circumstances. So was she a murderess or was she just a pitiful soul.....The heroine has six brothers that are hilarious, underfoot, very, very protective, and very loving toward Saidh.....she's also the youngest of the siblings and as such became quite the tomboy. She can wield a sword and ride like the wind. She is physically strong and curses like a sailor.....not your typical Lady of the time.Now the Laird of the castle used to be a mercenary and so he comes from a rough background as well.....and when the two meet the sparks and barbs fly....along with a fist or two.Now there are a few attempts on Saidh's life, which has Greer beside himself..(the hero/Laird)...which is a twist in and of its own. The whole time you have at least 2-4 characters lined up as the bad guy, depending on where you are in the story as to how many. And when you find out, your surprised....but not really!Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Cheers!! 🍺🍺

Secondly, hands down best photos out of any cannabis book I've ever seen. The macro photos were another level of quality and obviously their team had a fun time putting this book together.. The engineering process outcome is translatable into unintended consequences (potential harm to health and the environment because of the lack of precision and control.Globally some 35 crops feed humanity but only four are genetically commercialized: soy, corn, canola, and cotton. The vast majority of the world's 195 countries have not accepted GMO's; only 0.38 percent of world farmers grow GMO food. Evidence today shows that GMO's are allergenic, are toxic to cells and organs, and compromise the nutritional value of subject foods. Environmental hazards of using GMO's increase the need to use toxic carcinogenic and teratogenic compounds (Roundup from Monsanto).On page 45 the author(s) state: "To date there is not a single GMO on the market that delivers...higher intrinsic yields than the natural crops..." No engineered crops are drought resistant, none have enhanced nutrition or any attractive-sounding traits.The genetics of the major crops grown on US farms are controlled by a half dozen multinational interests. Not publicized as such by seed and food cartels but the real issue is now "food sovereignty" and food control becomes nation control under political style management.Agricultural yield increases have always been an annual necessity in India, the world's second most populous and growing area. Farmers' suicides are endemic in certain regions and are related to heavy debt loads needed to finance seed and food production. The main culprit on failed farms is related to the biotechnology cotton that was financially disastrous and causally implicated in the suicides. Cattle have reportedly perished and 16 sheep died after grazing on biotechnology cotton fields.Bill and Melinda Gates are known globally as philanthropists. They are less known, no doubt, as champions for GMO as a solution for world hunger under a technocratic ideology , a position that runs counter to informed science. Bill Gates funds front groups who work with Monsanto and others who see world hunger as a growing business and industrial opportunity.Back to Monsanto, described on page 98 as having a history of criminality that includes the production of Agent Orange, dioxin, and PCB's, all declared as safe by Monsanto.Years of domestic turmoil threatens southern Africa with starvation alongside drought conditions and failed harvests.Biotech cotton farmers in India and China often apply as much pesticide to engineered cotton as they do to conventional cotton. But they may have paid up to four times as much for the biotech seed, accompanied by debt and despair and frequent suicides.Monsanto, Syngenta, Dupont and Bayer now control 41% of the global seed supply.

I think this is a good source of information on genetically modified foods. There are many other scientists who have also expressed their reservations about the use of seeds which are genetically modified, especially those modified to withstand heavy spraying with herbicides (weedkillers, such as Roundup, Dow Duo Enlist (2,4-D combined with Roundup) and others on the way. I am thankful for their efforts and wish more of this was in the mainstream media. People deserve to know what they are eating and honest, unbiased research is needed to assure the safety of any technology used to this extent to produce the nation's food supply. This book shows there is absolutely scientific dissent on this issue (55 essays- and these writers are not alone.) I hope that greater caution with this technology will be taken to protect our health. The presence of these chemicals in babies' cord blood, breastmilk and household water is definitely a cause for concern. I wish the US would employ the precautionary principal like many other countries have.

I was disappointed. It is what it is billed to be, a collection of essays, basically. But there is no index and no way to search for what I specifically want to know: If cooked, do the modified dna or proteins denature to the extent that the damage is limited or eliminated? What if you consume meat or eggs that come from animals that were fed genetically modified feed materials? Are the unhealthy consequences of consuming that feed passed on?Why don't the gmo antagonists answer those questions? Makes you wonder who pays their bills.I would give this book a one star except that for someone who has not really been exposed to the alleged ill effects of genetic tampering, this might be worth perusing. Otherwise, in my opinion, it is overbilled. Just cut and paste.And no, I do not work for Monsanto. I am a PO'ed consumer who distrusts equally the gmo advocates and the anti-gmo evangelists. It is time for them to come up with more and better organized data, and an effective way to get the word out.

An Interview with Gayle Forman Q: You started your career as a journalist and your first book is a travelogue about going around the world. Is YA literature a departure for you? Gayle Forman: Actually, it’s more of a homecoming. My first writing job was at Seventeen, where I spent five years on staff and as a contributor reporting the magazine’s social-issues stories. I loved writing for teens then because—contrary to popular opinion—they really care about serious issues (from child soldiers in Africa to kids embroiled in the drug war here) and the engage in their reading with such passion. So, now that I’m writing young-adult literature, it feels like I’ve come full circle. Q: This book explores some serious themes. Why is this a book for kids and not adults? GF: It’s a book for kids precisely because it explores serious themes. Teenagers are grappling with choices about life and love as much as adults, so why shouldn’t their reading reflect that? I don’t set out to write YA. It just seems like I’m drawn to stories about young people. That said, I think If I Stay is for adults, too. I love the idea of teens reading this book and then handing it off to their parents. Q: Many key characters are serious musicians, and songs are referenced throughout the book. Are you a musician? GF: No. Except for piano lessons when I was a kid and a brief spate of guitar playing in my teens, I’ve never played an instrument. I am, however, a huge music fan. And my husband is a musician; he was playing in a punk band when we met, so I’ve spent a lot of my life ensconced in that scene. For those that had seen the movie before reading the book, some of the additional details and information given in the book made the decision that was ultimately made make more sense to them. Our book club is going to watch the movie together soon and then discuss it again! :)

I must say that i liked Where She Went much better than If I Stay. Am i allowed to say that? The second book usually isn't as good as the first book. If I Stay was all about death and Mia being in a Coma the whole time, and wondering if she should live or die. I couldn't handle that.It’s been three years since the accident that took away Mia’s family. Adam is a huge rock star now. His band Shooting Star is making albums, winning awards, and touring the world. Adam should be living it up, but he is no longer the same guy he was. His life is the shadow of what it should be and it all traces back to the accident that changed everything he believed in. He's a broken guy no longer in love with the music he used to eat, sleep and dream about. Instead he is a guy just floating by. A random chance encounter in NYC changes everything. The past that Adam thought was over and had left behind is suddenly right in his face leaving him no choice but to deal with his demons and decide if the past should be left in the past.Where She Went is told in Adam's POV which i absolutely loved. I felt so bad for Adam. He was so heartbroken after Mia left, and i could really feel his pain. I was really mad at Mia for leaving him like that, but after reading further into the book I understand why she did what she did. I also liked that in the beginning of the chapters were Adam's lyrics to the songs he written. This book was just so beautifully written and it's an absolute must read.

There are certain books that just emotionally drain you, and this was one of them. There are moments of sadness, moments of happiness, moments of pain, and moments of sweetness. It is a book whose story just stays with you.I love the way the story of If I Stay is constructed. It is told from Mia's point of view, but it isn't just her version of the present. Instead, it travels back and forth through her history and those of the people she loves. This gives the entire book a bit of a bittersweet quality, as you experience loss with Mia. You are a part of her world after the fact and it makes the present all the sadder. It is a story of. a girl with an incredibly quirky and fun family, a snarky best friend, and rocker boyfriend who represents everything she herself is not.Mia's family is built on music and love. Her dad was a former punk rocker and her mom his biggest fan. Mia's boyfriend Adam was a rocker whose career is growing even before he finishes high school. And then there is Mia, the classical music loving cellist who is on her way to great things. But, in a single moment, everything changes for her and for her family.The author doesn't shy away from the tough situations or questions that arise from Mia's personal tragedy. Instead, she makes Mia and the reader question themselves about fanily and choices. What is a family? How do you choose when faced with such diverse choices?This is a book about family and tragedy and unthinkable choices, but it is also a story of beauty. It speaks of the bonds between those we love. And with these themes, there is also the love between Adam and Mia. Their romance was beautiful, sweet and passionate. It was music that brought them together, no matter how different the two expressed it. And it was their differing musical genres that often threatened their relationship as their music took them in very different directions. I liked that their relationship was portrayed realistically. Instead of painting everything as perfect, it touched on problems and dischord.The interesting thing, however, was in how I related to Adam and Mia. If I Stay was Mia's story, but it was Adam that I identified with the most. There were moments during flashbacks where I felt like Mia was unfair or too demanding and it was Adam who was the sympathetic quality. And Adam's pain and anguish and selfless love was beautiful to watch. I watched the movie shortly after finishing the novel and I felt the same way for most of it, as well.My Recommendation: If you like a good, emotional read that isn't all perfect happy endings, then this is an excellent read. The story is beautiful and sweet, even as it is tragic and sad at times.

The premise of the story intrigued me, but that wasn't a huge part of the book. Most of the book is about Mia's back story, her relationship with her parents, her best friend and her boyfriend, her love for the cello, etc. I was surprised at how strongly the story impacted me- it really made me examine my own life on a deep level and I found myself crying on several occasions. I'm quite surprised this is considered a YA book- even though the main character is a teenager, I found the themes resonated with me at age 49. The writing is also superb- I haven't read a book this good in a long time.The only criticism I have- and it's a mild one- is that the "present-day" events, and what Mia goes through as she makes her decision, are not developed to the extent I thought they would have been. After all, it's the original premise of the book- you expect the character to go through a lot of struggles to decide whether to return to life or not. And in the end, you don't see her actually make the decision- it just kind of suddenly happens, and then the book is over. Perhaps not surprising since it leads you to immediately want to read "Where She Went" to find out what happens next. And honestly, the book was so good that I didn't even realize the life-or-death decision hadn't been explored fully until the book was over!
