"Contemporary Theology: An Introduction: Classical, Evangelical, Philosophical, and Global Perspectives" came at just the right moment for me. I have been trying to grow as a pastor-theologian, doing more strategic theological reading and deeper theological thinking, but I keep feeling like I’m missing some crucial foundational knowledge.I already have three degrees in Bible and theology, but I still often feel like I’m playing catch-up when some theological controversies pop up on the radar. So in January, just when I was planning out my reading strategy for 2019, Scot McKnight blogged about this new book by Kirk MacGregor that concisely summarized all of the prevailing theologies of the modern period. 'Yep, that's what I need" I said as I pushed "Add to Cart." I’ve been reading one chapter in a sitting several times a week (just 5-9 pages each), so it’s taken me about 3 months to work through the 38 chapters.I had heard of the subjects of each chapter, but I wasn’t super familiar with all of them. Before reading "Contemporary Theology," I couldn’t have explained the big ideas of many of the theologians of the 20th century such as Barth, Bultmann, Tillich, Moltmann, Pannenberg, Rahner, Yoder, Cone, Plantiga, and dozens more. I had been introduced to many many of them back in seminary and had to read some of their works, but today, I couldn’t have explained their thoughts to someone curious. Now having read the book, I still probably couldn’t explain those big ideas to the satisfaction of their leading proponents, but I believe that those leading proponents would be very satisfied with MacGregor’s explanations. He has a knack for capturing and restating the deep thinking of deep thinkers.MacGregor tries to keep his opinions to himself. For the most part, he doesn’t offer his own evaluations of these diverse theologies, attempting mostly to help people grasp what the idea is, not whether or not it’s a good or right idea. At times, he can’t really help it, and his own admiration for a particular position, argument, or theologian seeps through (and sometimes his disdain for one does, too). That’s not really a weakness. In fact, I enjoyed reading between the lines to guess at what his theological proclivities are. I also thoroughly enjoyed the parts where several of my own professors showed up as key movers and shakers in the story.I’m really glad I read "Contemporary Theology." It was a refresher course in theological movements that have shaped the time period in which I have lived. I’m sure I will refer back to it many times as I continue to grow bit-by-bit as a pastor-theologian. “Oh yeah, that’s what that theologian taught!”Recommended.

I already have found this volume a helpful resource. The chapters are short, the style is simple (much appreciated). I have learned in the few days I have had it a few things I never knew. My quibble is that the American Holiness Movement and her spiritual grandfather John Wesley seem to be ignored. In the early 19th century (in the USA) some believe that one of three Americans were Methodist. Francis Asbury was the second most recognized person by face in what was the entire nation then. Pietism is mentioned, but I fail to see how you could devote as much material as is given to Moody or say, John Piper and totally ignore Wesley or contemporary theologians like Dallas Willard (who taught on spiritual formation but emphasized the need for sanctification in all his works), or even Oswald Chambers, whose devotional books have influenced American Christianity immensely. I am pleased that Clark Pinnock and Roger Olson were given some mention. I consider Olson one of the most thoughtful practical and historical theologians writing today. Not everyone I have mentioned might want to be categorized as a Wesleyan or “holiness” theologian, unless the author intended the category of Pietism or Pentecostalism to serve as an umbrella for the larger movement of Wesleyan leaning thinkers. I was not really surprised by this (in my view) omission, but was a bit let down. There are places where the American Holiness Movement and the larger Wesleyan Movement intersect with Pietism and Classical Pentecostal doctrine, but there are distinctions that should have been made, just to cover all bases, if you will

Zondervan, the slave of Southern Baptist theology, does nothing new here. MacGregor plays it safe in every respect, highlighting only the parts of contemporary theology that support pre-existing bias and dismissing challenges to Southern Baptist theology. His writing is choppy, stunted, redundant, and unnecessarily dense to prove his foundation in philosophy - NOT theology. This text could have been far more interesting, challenging, and informative if Zondervan's editorial team published material that reflected Christian beliefs (not just Evangelical beliefs) and had actually done their job to make MacGregor's work readable. This book is primarily useful to professors who can fill in the obvious shortcomings and who want to assign a text that is cheap for their students.

Dr. MacGregor has done a wonderful job in providing an accessible resource to those interested in the more modern manifestations of the theological landscape. This important work will equip the believer to become familiar with all of the major theological developments of the modern era. This is vitally important given the vast ignorance of the developments of modern theology and misapprehensions of the streams of thought that effect both for the better or worse the church today. I purchased the Kindle edition as well as the audio lectures that can also be purchased on audible. As an Christian apologist, I found this work to be very useful, and while not an apologetic work itself, there is still great apologetic value in understanding the various developments theologically that have developed within the past 200 years. Highly recommended!

Adding details like their being two personages and God, the Father, speaking just like in the bible "This is my beloved Son, hear Him." and a host of other significant changes (that's leaving out all the inconsequential grammatical and spelling errors that Mormon apologists erroneously claim are the only changes).If you are knowledgeable of the Freemason induction rituals and oaths, you will undoubtedly see remarkable similarities with the secretive Mormon temple rituals. The author lists and documents his finding of where Joseph Smith borrowed the symbols, undergarment stitches, and signs that worthy Mormons are given when entering the temple and they all are lifted from masonic teachings and beliefs.The one I personally found hilarious is the revealing historical context surrounding Joseph Smith's published prophecies in the Doctrine and Covenants that proves Joseph Smith was an unapologetic charlatan and false prophet. The author cites whenever Joseph Smith was questioned or criticized by his peers or followers -- he would have a new revelation from God that states that if (insert name) does not repent and follow the Lord's will and plan dictated to His modern prophet Joseph Smith they will risk being completely destroyed.1. Complain about losing all your money and land to pay for the printing of the Book of Mormon? -- God orders you to do so or you will be destroyed.2. When I read it, I was positively mad at the lies the Mormons tell their followers. That book has caused many people to finally realize that their own personal standards and far more important the the social standing of staying in the church. In spite of logic, evidence, rheems of court records and historic documents, some people just cant give up that belied in their childhood fantasies.

An utterly fascinating and thorough book. The author is to be commended for his diligent research as well as the ability to write so clearly. However, I have to say that the end of the book is rather frustrating. The author never explains how, given everything he himself has written, he remains a believer in Mormonism. I would have loved the author to "step from behind the screen' and tell what he personally thinks of Joseph Smith and his writings. Nonetheless, this book is highly recommended.

I have been working on trying to tease out the various influences of scripture, other religions, and other sources on Mormonism for a year or two, and found it all compiled for me in this easy-to read, easy to comprehend, clearly written book! I appreciate the author's sparse personal commentary, allowing the evidence to largely speak for itself, and refraining from commenting on 'what the evidence means' or leads him to believe. In the words of the Dragnet detective, it's "Just the facts, ma'am." I really appreciated that approach, which allows me to come to my own conclusions about the evidence.

Not a Mormon, but found this fascinating & learned a lot about the origins. Especially interesting to learn about the trends in religious developments & movements in U.S. at time of Joseph Smith & the tremendous impact they & the thinkers behind them had on the "birth" of Mormonism.

I purchased this book because I was intrigued by the title. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! Thank you for writing this detailed and fascinating book ... I learned about about the beginnings of the church, and the things we were never taught. I appreciate all of the time, research, and effort it must've taken to compile this information. Thank you, my eyes have been opened.

What I liked most about this book was learning about the various sources, Joseph undoubtedly used to create his Doctrines: particularly those on Temple Worship, Baptism for the Dead and his concept of Heaven and its three degrees of glory. Critics say he borrowed from his contemporaries and they throw out names like Thomas Dick and Emmanual Swedenborg...but who has time to read much less digest these lengthy books. Michael has saved the reader a lot of time and tees it up in an easily readable manner.

Of all the books I’ve studied on the topic of LDS Church History, this one has been one of the most thorough, accurate, and well-cited, while also being relatively concise. It was a great read.

I purchased this book while I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and it helped me a lot. It gave me a better understanding of what was going on around me, and helped me deal with people better. Although I disagree with some of the descriptions found in the book, I suppose it is just a matter of individual perception. They were subjective details, and not practical matters. A few things I discarded as the kind of exaggeration that adds color to a description -- such as the crazy way taxi drivers drive around the city -- just to discover the author had been telling the truth, although not all drivers do it. Anyway, I suppose it is impossible to talk about a culture in general without some generalization. Also, the part of the book that deals with history helped me a lot. It explained things that I really wanted to know. For example, without understanding the massive European immigration that happened in the twentieth century, I could not understand the strong European characteristics of Buenos Aires. I wanted to know how the European ties had been preserved, and I found out the explanation in this book. It is a great read for anybody considering visiting the country.I just did not like the fact that I bought the Kindle version, and I could not browse the chapters. This version did not allow me to choose a chapter and click on it, so that I could focus on what I was interested. This is the reason for only 4 stars.

When visiting a new culture,I find it very helpful for some hints about do's and don'ts. It was good to learn that Buenos Aires is a very sophisticated city. We were glad we were warned about the black market money changers. They were trying to tempt us everywhere.

Sorry to say but this book has so many inaccuracies that it's hard to take anything it says as truth.

There aren't as many pages to the book as I was hoping for, but I guess that is pretty common with the touch and feel board books. Either way, there will be a very happy 2 year old who can drool on this to her hearts content.

Bought for my 1 year old great niece and liked it so much I bought it again for my grandson's Christmas Present. Loved that it wasn't the usual animal tough and feel.

This is my son's favorite touch and feel book. He loves the orangutan, frog, and jaguar. It's one of the better books from this company!
