Despite having access to Lynda.com and Pluralsight.com which both have excellent Maya courses, having a book to highlight, mark the margins and return to as reference is very helpful. I am moving from 3DS Max to Maya 2018 and I wanted a book to gel the core concepts of modeling and shading, as well as animating, rigging, constraints... in Maya.Other than changes from 2016 to 2018 Maya, primarily a change in renderer (Mental Ray to Arnold), as well as MASH (unlikely to be covered in an intro book), this book applies well to Maya 2018.I found the book very practical, with interesting projects that could be completed in a reasonable amount of time, and reinforced key concepts. I would recommend this book for anyone new to Maya or moving from another 3D software package. I would have given this book a 5 star rating, but the picture quality in the text is poor. This is likely a combination of the printing, as well as image contrast and magnification. Some of the topics are complex (e.g. UV Mapping, rigging) and poor images make the topic more difficult to follow. There had at one time been videos online to demonstrate the content, but only a few can still be found on YouTube. My only other comment relates to efficiency. I wondered why the author created a "virtual studio" of planes for modeling, instead of using the built in image plane functionality. With the image planes you simply import an image for top, front, side views (and move them back -100 in their respective planes). Instead he has you build this from scratch. In the same vein, short-cut key creation could have been introduced for some common repetitive menu tasks such as center pivot, delete history, freeze transformations. In summary, this is a very well written book and I would highly recommend it, despite its being outdated for the 2016 version of Maya. As far as I can tell, it was updated for more than a decade of revisions since 2004, and its content appears to have greatly benefited from both revisions as well as the authors own extensive experience. It would be a shame if Sybex and Autodesk let this book fall into "out of print," even when online tutorials have largely taken over. If they do print a sequel in the future, I would recommend they improve the printed image quality (which by the way, was just as poor in the Kindle versions of their Mastering Maya book).

Great guide to Autodesk Maya! My only thought - a Glossary in back would be very handy. I'm new to 3D work, and would've liked a "quick reference" to the many unfamiliar terms and expressions.

Easy to find subjects and well organized. I recommend it. Despite I am a Maya LT 2018 user, until now, I found all I needed.

This book is the one for getting underway with learning Maya. This one will lead you to the more complete and thorough book Mastering Autodesk Mays 2016.

I'm learning Maya 2016 and 3D modeling and this is an essential resource for anyone else doing the same. Would definitely recommend Dariush's book!

Great book for someone just learning. A little harder to read for my daughter but together we are getting through it well.

Still in the middle of reading it. But It has a lot of good information

Good book to read.

Gospel Assurance and Warnings (Recovering the Gospel), by Paul Washer

Review

Few things are more important than the question of the assurance of our salvation. The dangers of false assurance are obvious, and Scripture warns us that the number of falsely assured in churches is legion. The tragedy of the unnecessarily troubled is that they never gain the footing that produces the fruit of the Spirit and compels great acts of obedience. Just as I would want my children to know for certain they are mine, God wants His children to know that they are His. Washer has provided a great and thorough resource for those wanting to plumb the depths of the question Am I really saved? and to teach it to others. This book is loaded with scriptural analysis and pastoral advice. It is a necessary book for the library of anyone entrusted with the care of souls. --J. D. Greear, PhD, author of Stop Asking Jesus into Your Heart: How to Know for Sure You Are Saved and Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity RevolutionaryPaul Washer has given us a tremendously helpful tool to seek solid assurance that we are saved from sin by God's grace. The Word of God is like a mirror for self-examination. The Epistle of First John particularly helps us examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith. Washer applies 1 John in a masterful way to this question, explaining a dozen marks of saving grace in the soul. At the same time, this book does not encourage us to rest on our past experiences but to press forward in spiritual growth in dependence upon the Spirit of Christ. Here is sweet help for God's children struggling to enjoy assurance of their Father's forgiveness and acceptance. And here is a sober warning to the self-deceived. May God use this book for His glory to the comfort of His people and the conversion of lost sinners. --Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

From the Inside Flap

It should come as no surprise that misunderstandings about the gospel message and the nature of true conversion result in a problem with genuine assurance of salvation. A pseudo-gospel of "easy believism" has led many into careless presumption, and a poor understanding of salvation has abandoned tender consciences to near spiritual despair. In Gospel Assurance and Warnings, Paul Washer shines the light of gospel hope as he cautions against the dangers of making an empty profession of faith and carefully explains from Scripture the basis for establishing and maintaining a sound assurance of faith. Author Paul Washer ministered as a missionary in Peru for ten years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society (www.heartcrymissionary.com). He and his wife, Charo, have three children: Ian, Evan, and Rowan. Paul Washer's most recent book Gospel Assurance and Warnings (the third book in his series Recovering the Gospel) is an incredible read. Never have I read a book that was more thoroughly Biblical and timely than this book! With a watered down gospel being taught throughout America there has been a rebirth of "gospel-centered" books over the last five years. Some have been well done, others have been just the same old moralism that American Christians have bought into for years. The gospel says (to borrow from Timothy Keller) you are more awful than you ever thought possible but you are more loved then you ever dreamed. The gospel makes us see how wretched we are, but God's love shows us how amazing He is and how awesome a gift His love is. Paul Washer's books are by far and away the best books on the topic of the gospel. Not a page goes by without a Bible verse and a gem of a thought by Washer. I started underlining all the amazing portions of this book and I found I was underlining everything. I will come back to this book over and over again as I teach those around me about the gospel, as I try to live out the gospel and finally as I lay down at night and the dark doubts attack me, I will rest in the truths that his books have brought to life that were always there in the Bible, but I was too immature and blind to see. This book is broken into two parts. Part one deals with how to know that we are saved, the assurance of our salvation. This is where Washer is really shows his skill as an expositor. He takes 1 John and walks us through what it means to be an assured follower of Christ. He blasts those who have "prayed a prayer" thus they are saved, as well as those who have "put their stamp of approval" on anyone who believes the magical prayer actually is the end of the gospel. He attacks the thought that the gospel is something for new Christians and that we move past it as we mature. Instead he points out that the gospel is all of what it means to be a Christian. He does all this while giving some great insight into 1 John. If I ever preach through 1 John I will surely use this book as a key part of my teaching. Part two deals with warnings for those who would change the gospel into easy believism. Washer walks through key portions on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew's account of it) to explain Jesus' warnings for those who change His gospel. His chapter entitled Gospel Reductionism is the most powerful and moving chapter as he lays out how many in the church, yours truly included, have changed the gospel into something it is not. This part was also very well done, and I was moved by each chapter. Convicted about my attitude toward the gospel (both in the past and the present) and humbled by Washer's plain talk about the Bible and his encyclopedic knowledge of our Lord's Word. This book is a book I will reread over and over again. If you are passionate about following God's Word and setting out a correct picture of the gospel then you need to purchase this book. And while you are at it buy the other two books too.Five stars (only because I can't give it six)

4/5 - recommend to anyone who is questioning their assurance of salvation and anyone wanting to learn more about the gospelWhat I liked:Similar to the other two books in the series, starts every chapter with a verse and then discusses the Greek or Hebrew translation. He then exegetes the verse as it relates to assurance. The book is fully of Scripture, well over a thousand references. It is a solid theological exegesis of verses dealing with assurance. What I did not like:Having read this series of three books back to back, it became very repetitive. This book not only repeated ideas from the previous volumes, but also repeated the same idea within the book. This is to be expected with the way the book is set up — using a systematic exegesis of verses that builds on itself every chapter... but as a reader this becomes wearying. Each chapter is probably best used as a reference in the future and will be an amazing resource.

So timely for this nation and world as a watered down Gospel (which is no Gospel at all) is being increasingly propagated, and evangelized with. I love how clear Mr. Washer presents his case and the level of discernment he exercises when discussing a subject (false and true peofessions of faith ) that most do not like to deal with. I've experienced first hand many who have walked away from the Lord and have yet to return and this book gives me an even greater passion and desire to pursue them with great eagerness.

Paul Washer's knowledge of the Holy writ is second to none. He explains the Gospel and assurance of eternal life in a clear and understandable way which most Christians do not have the ability to do, or even understand. And, what is not talked about in modern times are the awful warnings that the Bible conveys to those who would treat the Gospel of Christ in a false and apostate manner. Mr. Washer pulls no punches about what the Bible says, and points out the awful warnings to those who would demean or take lightly the Gospel of Christ.

I would recommend this book,'Gospel Assurance & Warnings' to anyone who is serious about wanting to delve deeper into the true meaning of being a Christian. The 'Recovering the Gospel Series' are the best study books on true Christianity since C.S. Lewis and Charles Spurgeon. A sobering warning to the falsely assured, a sweet assurance to those of genuine conversion, and an enlightening guide to those who seek to understand why salvation is needed. Truly an inspirational work. Buy this one, you won't be sorry.

Thank God for Paul Washer! He doesn't hold back. I wish every man who stands in a pulpit would read some of Paul Washer's books!

Review

"Bad Blood is the real be-all end-all of Theranos information…. Bad Blood is wild, and more happens on one page than in many other entire books." —Margaret Lyons, The New York Times"You will not want to put this riveting, masterfully reported book down. No matter how bad you think the Theranos story was, you'll learn that the reality was actually far worse."—Bethany McLean, bestselling coauthor of The Smartest Guys in the Room and All the Devils Are Here"Chilling... Carreyrou tells [this story] virtually to perfection… Reads like a West Coast version of All the President's Men."—Roger Lowenstein, The New York Times Book Review"The definitive account of Theranos’s downfall, detailing its motley crew of executives, legal knife fights, dramatic PR stunts, and skullduggery... Offers a lot for foreign-policy wonks... While Bad Blood is worth reading for its own merits—it’s a stunning feat of journalism that reads like a thriller—it also says a lot about Washington’s facile relationship with Silicon Valley. Most D.C. power brokers know next to nothing about science or technology but increasingly view Silicon Valley tech as a deus ex machina for some of the world’s most complicated challenges. Bad Blood offers a sobering warning of where that type of thinking can lead."—Robbie Gramer, Foreign Policy"A great and at times almost unbelievable story of scandalous fraud, surveillance, and legal intimidation at the highest levels of American corporate power. . . . The story of Theranos may be the biggest case of corporate fraud since Enron. But it’s also the story of how a lot of powerful men were fooled by a remarkably brazen liar." —Yashar Ali, New York Magazine"Even if you didn’t follow the story of charismatic Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes (and the ensuing trainwreck) in the news, you will find yourself zipping through a book that proves once again that fact is stranger than fiction. A stunning look into a high-tech hoodwinking; like a high-speed car chase in a book."—The New York Post's "28 Most Unforgettable Books of 2018""In Bad Blood, acclaimed investigative journalist John Carreyrou, who broke the story in 2015, presents comprehensive evidence of the fraud perpetrated by Theranos chief executive Elizabeth Holmes... He unveils many dark secrets of Theranos that have not previously been laid bare…  The combination of these brave whistle-blowers, and a tenacious journalist who interviewed 150 people (including 60 former employees) makes for a veritable page-turner." —Eric Topol, Nature"Engrossing… Bad Blood boasts movie-scene detail… Theranos, Carreyrou writes, was a revolving door, as Holmes and Balwani fired anyone who voiced even tentative doubts… What’s frightening is how easy it is to imagine a different outcome, one in which the company’s blood-testing devices continued to proliferate. That the story played out as it did is a testament to the many individuals who spoke up, at great personal risk." —Jennifer Couzin-Frankel, Science"In exposing the fudged numbers, boardroom battles and sickening sums of money tossed Theranos’ way, Bad Blood succeeds in highlighting Silicon Valley’s paradoxical blind spot. Insular corporate culture and benevolent media coverage have allowed a monster to grow in the Valley—one that gambles not just with our smart phones or our democracy, but with people’s lives. Bad Blood reveals a crucial truth: outside observers must act as the eyes, the ears and, most importantly, the voice of Silicon Valley’s blind spot."—B. David Zarley, Paste Magazine's "16 Best Nonfiction Books of 2018""Carreyrou blends lucid descriptions of Theranos’s technology and its failures with a vivid portrait of its toxic culture and its supporters’ delusional boosterism. The result is a bracing cautionary tale about visionary entrepreneurship gone very wrong."—Publishers Weekly (Starred)"Crime thriller authors have nothing on Carreyrou's exquisite sense of suspenseful pacing and multifaceted character development in this riveting, read-in-one-sitting tour de force.... Carreyrou's commitment to unraveling Holmes' crimes was literally of life-saving value."—Booklist (Starred Review)"Eye-opening... A vivid, cinematic portrayal of serpentine Silicon Valley corruption... A deep investigative report on the sensationalistic downfall of multibillion-dollar Silicon Valley biotech startup Theranos. Basing his findings on hundreds of interviews with people inside and outside the company, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal reporter Carreyrou rigorously examines the seamy details behind the demise of Theranos and its creator, Elizabeth Holmes… [Carreyrou] brilliantly captures the interpersonal melodrama, hidden agendas, gross misrepresentations, nepotism, and a host of delusions and lies that further fractured the company’s reputation and halted its rise."—Kirkus

This is an impeccably researched and referenced account of the Theranos saga. As a long-time observer and sometime competitor of Theranos I watched this tale unfold whilst working at a couple of established IVD companies. Everyone I knew who had ever developed an assay or instrument knew this was smoke and mirrors, impossibly too good to be true. What I never suspected was just how personally dishonest EH had been, and for how long the complex deception was maintained. Whilst I've met a few egregious individuals working for big companies, there are enough checks and balances (QA/RA, Med/Sci Affairs, CLSs and other professionals etc) in place to stop harmful devices getting out the door. The subject matter - developing devices and assays - is a complex dry topic, difficult to write engagingly about. But JC does a workmanlike job and I read this in one go after its midnight Kindle release. My only nit to pick is the poor editing: there are so many uses of '....named....' as in 'an engineer named John Smith' or 'a restaurant named Joe's Bar' that it got irritating. Find/replace 'named' with a comma would have worked fine in most cases. The text was also repetitive - eg '...an award named after Channing...' gets at least 2 mentions. But not enough to lose a star.Kudos to the good people at Theranos who had the courage to get the story out and for JCs persistence into a headwind of legalistic intimidation. I've heard Theranos is now a case-study for MBA students: this book should be required reading for anyone thinking about 'disrupting' the medical devices industry. There are lives at stake.

I started this book and could not put it down. It's a horrifying true story of a driven entrepreneur whose only overriding goal was to become insanely rich. And she would do anything, any unimagineable thing, to get there.Elizabeth Holmes leveraged her family's high profile connections to draw in early investors and supporters, who were not very inquisitive on details, nor very skeptical in nature. Drawing on the good name and reputation of these early supporters, she was able to build an impressive roster of other supporters with stellar reputations in tech and venture capital circles. From there, it was just a matter of stage managing the house of cards she was building.Holmes crafted a Potemkin village that had fooled investors, customers, and visiting dignitaries. Her product demonstrations were outright theater, staged managed illusions worthy of David Copperfield. Theranos employees in on the ruse were assured it was just temporary, until the actual product could be perfected and the results repeatable. That day would never come. Those on the outside who also worked in this field had well founded and grave doubts about how Theranos could be touting a product that seemingly defied both logic and physics. Their suspicions, proven to be correct, was that it was too good to be true.Without a trace of guilt or regret, she induced powerful tech workers to leave lucrative careers at other major tech firms, giving up millions in stock options, to come work for Theranos, surely knowing the whole thing would collapse one day. When skeptical board members asked to see data affirming the effectiveness of their product, Holmes would defer, saying those papers were in perpetual legal review. Some employees, when they were no longer useful to her, or deemed disloyal, were immediately and unceremoniously marched out. This is a real life thriller, the story of someone who is a true diabolical movie villain. Holmes is portrayed vividly as a paranoid sociopath who could also be disarming, charmingly manipulative, utterly ruthless and devoid of conscience. This is a tale of corporate greed and lack of regulatory oversight gone all awry.

It takes a mighty strong person and an incredible investigative journalist to take down a multibillion company lead by a CEO and her partner who are doing nothing but telling lies, mistreating their employees, taking millions of dollars under false pretenses from Fortune 500 businesses and wealthy investors, betraying their esteemed board members, and worst and most harmful of all, putting the lives of their end customers in serious jeopardy because the technology that they claim to have engineered does not exist nor has it been FDA approved or tested. This is John Carreyrou’s BAD BLOOD: SECRETS AND LIES IN A SILICON VALLEY STARTUP. Carreyrou went to monumental lengths over the course of several years, with the help of named and unnamed sources who worked or were connected to Theranos, the company, which claimed to have created a blood-testing device that with ‘one drop of blood’ could obtain hundreds of test results thus saving lives. Not only were their little machines ineffective but they were doing no such thing. Meaning, they could not provide accurate test results because they were not even obtaining them. Rather, they were using commercial analyzers in their place. At the helm was Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes, a Stanford drop-out who had a brilliant idea, but it was never brought to fruition. She simply leads people to believe it was with her charm. A lot of people. It is staggering how many people she swayed. We’re not just talking about a co-worker or two but former heads of state, who later joined her board, people who amassed fortunes in the billions who were willing to loan Theranos money, major corporations including Walgreens and Safeway who wanted to get in on the ground floor, and many more. It is equally astonishing how so many smart, successful people were not taken aback by her freakish obsession with imitating Steve Jobs. Perhaps, they chalked this up to her eccentricity. It took courage for people to come forward. They were threatened with lawsuits that could bankrupt them ten times over, by one of the leading and most intimidating litigators in the country. Carreyrou, a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist, who has been with The Wall Street Journal for almost 10 years, had the support of his editor, newspaper, and its attorneys. He never thought for a minute to back down. The result – a series of articles in the paper that exposed Theranos and Holmes for the fraud they committed. It is dumbfounding to read BAD BLOOD and to think that Holmes and her number two in command, Sunny Balwani, also her romantic partner, which was kept secret, got away with so much for so long, and even when finally confronted and their hands were forced, they still would not admit fault. Is Holmes a criminal? Is she delusional? What I do know is that you will not be able to put this book down.
