I learned a lot about German Jewish cooking. Having married a "Yekkeh", this explained a lot of things, like my husband's parents' obsession with asparagus! My MIIL served it every day when it was in season. To the point where my husband wouldn't eat asparagus for about 40 years. I do wish the book hadn't been as entirely focused on Washington Heights. My husband grew up in Salt Lake City, where they also kept up some of these food traditions, but where there were just a few German Jewish families. He didn't meet other Yekkehs until he was an adult on the East Coast.

I recognized many foods that my grandmother made and now I can't wait to make them myself. Many other receipes are new to me but I look forward to trying them (some I will be happy to just read and imagine).The book is well researched, full of interesting stories and beautifully laid out. The resource section for some of the more difficult to find ingredients is helpful.It is so fitting that a mother/daughter team wrote this together. Bringing family and history together with food. Yum.

My grandparents are German Jewish and came here after WWII. I bought this book for my mom, who also grew up in Washington Heights. The book brought up so many memories for both of us. My favorite part was the passage about Oma always setting the breakfast table the night before and everything being out when I woke up in the morning. Made me cry because of all the memories it brought up.

This is a wonderful cookbook. It brings back many memories of the great dishes my grandmother and parents made! Great recipes, photos, and stories.

This book reflects my upbringing -- not only the food and family history, but the actual NY neighborhood in which I grew up. It brought back so many memories that I bought 8 or 9 copies for many of my relatives. Their response was generally "Wow, where did you find this? It brought back so many good memories of making XXXX with my mother/grandmother/favorite aunt, . . ."

I decided to purchase this cookbook because it reminds me of my heritage. My parents come from the same city as the the parentsOf the author. The recipes were phenomenal and will try many of them. This is a well thought out cookbook. Actually, it’s more than a cookbook. The history of the Jews in Germany and transition to New York while keeping their food and religious traditions alive make the cookbook a very important record. It struck me as a labor of love. You can taste homemade comfort in all the recipes.The recipes are clearly written and delicious! I highly recommend this cookbook.

People of faith often believe that they must muzzle their emotions, particularly the negative ones like anger, guilt, and shame. But UNTANGLING EMOTIONS explains that even the negative emotions do have a purpose, and that Christ and God felt/feel emotions, too; the key is understanding the why and how of emotions and expressing them appropriately. In other words, even people of faith aren’t all happy all the time. They get angry or sad, too, but they can learn how to express that anger appropriately. (Aren’t there passages in the Bible when Jesus himself was very angry or in deep grief?) J. Alasdair Groves and Winston T. Smith wrote this relatively brief book discussing this very topic. Their style is simple, very approachable, engaging, and well-organized. There are Bible citations (English Standard Version only, thank you!), citations from other sources, as well as interesting anecdotes supporting their claims and giving both positive and negative examples. Some of the anecdotes are personal; when the authors do go into first person (“I”), it is clear which one of them the “I” is, Alasdair or Winston. Most of the chapters end with questions for reflection, making this an excellent book for either group or personal study; I highly recommend this book for church libraries.

Emotions are all the rage today, from "doing what feels right" to "getting in touch with your emotions." From a Christian point of view, the questions are these: What should we think about our emotions, and what should we do with them? This book, "Untangling Emotions," answers these two questions and gives more wise information about human emotions.In the first part of the book, the authors talk about the fact that emotions are part of being human and aren't necessarily bad. They also note that emotions are complex and they typically have to do with things we love, value, and treasure (p. 35). I appreciate how the authors also mentioned that emotions are a necessary part of relationships.In the second part of the book, the authors talk about engaging our emotions. There's a balance: emotions shouldn't rule us, nor should we totally ignore our emotions. Instead, we should engage them, ask questions of them, take them to God, nourish healthy emotions, and starve unhealthy emotions.In the last part of the book the authors put these principles to use by discussing the emotions of fear, anger, grief, and guilt. It's sort of the "practical application" section of the book.I did appreciate and enjoy this book. It's not a deep Ph.D. level study of emotions, nor is it an exegetical resource to study emotions that show up in Scripture. Instead, it's the insights of two wise Christian counselors/pastors reflecting systematically and biblically on the topic of emotions. My only slight critique of the book is that it sometimes is a bit wordy for my taste. That is, sometimes the authors explained a relatively simple concept in several pages when they could've done so on one page. Again, it's a minor critique but it's something I noticed. No big deal, though - this is a helpful book and I recommend it!

IN way too many sermons and books, emotions were treated as something that should be submitted to the ratio, will, or Jesus Christ's, as if they don't matter and Christians should strive to become balanced, moderate, and emotional flat. In Untangling Emotions, J. Alasdair Groves & Winston T. Smith draw different conclusions. Circumstances and feelings shouldn't reign, but emotions are real. It's how we act or fuel our emotions that can make a difference. Think of anger management, accept and offer forgiveness instead of indulging in shame and guilt, and forest the fruit of the Holy Spirit amidst adverse situations or emotions. The authors untangle different emotions, from grief and anger to joy and plea for a conscious way to respond to your emotions, including how you feel about how you feel. It is of vital importance to your relationship with God and others in your life. Our emotions are one of the most common and commonly misunderstood opportunities in our lives to grow in maturity and love.Emotions happen in our body, yet we live in a historical moment where the tendency is to overstate the role of the body. Our souls and flesh are interwoven. Understanding the mechanics of the brain is not the same as understanding how to live rightly before the Lord. We were made to respond with love for what is good and hatred for what is evil. No matter how much we come to understand the biology of our brains, we will still always need to wrestle with our emotions as expressions of what we love. Helping your respond with godly maturity to your emotions, good, bad and ugly, is the core message of this book, that involves a lot of theology and less on neuroscience.
