Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans Reviewed by John M. Wills Released: August 9, 2011 Publisher: Simon Pulse (336 pages) ." . . my 13-year-old grandson picked it up and began reading the first chapter after I had put it down. He remarked, "Papa, hurry up and finish reading this, I want to see where this story goes." I already know where this is all going: "Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25" is going to be another bestseller for Richard Paul Evans. The book is electric." Having read much of Richard Paul Evans's work, I knew to expect a wonderful story; however, I admit I was skeptical about reading a novel geared toward children 12 years old and up. My skepticism disappeared quickly as I began reading about the book's protagonist, Michael Vey. Author Evans has created a character that will entertain both adults and children. I found myself absorbed in the story just several pages in. Michael Vey is, ostensibly, an average teenager, 14 years old, who has the same problems as others in that awkward age group. He finds himself the victim of bullying, mostly due to his facial tics, a result of Tourette's. He doesn't fit in with most kids in school, and the girls avoid him whenever possible. His only friend, Ostin, the class brain--and therefore a nerd to the school jocks--also endures endless bouts of pranks and teasing. The two likeable adolescents form a bond that enables them to endure the constant gauntlet laid down by their classmates. At one point in the story an incident occurs in which Michael discovers he has a secret power--he's electric. Although his mother has known this about her son for some time, Michael is just now discovering his abnormal abilities can be used to his advantage. As the story develops, Mr. Evans creates moral dilemmas that Michael and his friends must face. Questions of ethics and evil versus good become pivotal points and serve to develop a moral comp5Q 4P M J Evans, Richard Paul. Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell-25. Simon Pulse, 2011. 336p. $17.99. 978-1-4516-5650-3. Ninth grade can be brutal, especially if you are an undersized boy dealing with Tourette's syndrome. Add bullies, disingenuous authority figures, a geeky best friend, a loving but financially strapped parent, and you have a relatable protagonist who just happens to have an amazing superpower. Michael Vey can zap people with electricity. With his mother's help, he has been able to keep his "mutation" a secret until the eventful day when popular cheerleader, Taylor, witnesses him defending himself against three tormentors. This event sets into action a chain of discoveries, deceit, and destruction that brings together an unlikely group of young people who must work together to save themselves and others. Throughout these adventures, the author interweaves a plausible scientific explanation for Michael's powers: sixteen years ago, seventeen babies were inadvertently given special abilities. Now, evil powerbrokers want to use these young people to cause international mayhem and gain wealth through extortion. Short chapters with intriguing titles, excellent writing, and engaging characters make this action-packed story a compulsively entertaining read. The tale progresses with altering points of view. Michael tells his story in first-person and Taylor's tale is narrated in third-person. This first book of a planned series has a satisfying conclusion but leaves the reader determined to discover what the next book, Rise of the Electroclan, has in store for our young hero and his friends. Though contemporary and edgy, this book contains no bad language, sex, or gratuitous violence. This is a book Rick Riordan's fans will want to read. Grade 7 & up Like Richard Evans' adult novels, this title has a message of hope and love. However, this book also has pure adventure, science fiction, and creepy bad guys. Michael Vey has been hiding a secret all his life: he has a superpower. Sixteen other children born in the same hospital at the same time also exhibit unusual electromagnetic powers. Michael and Taylor are the only ones who haven't been collected by the evil, power hungry men. With some help from others, Michael and Taylor free the prisoners of the twisted Elgin Academy where they are held. The book ends with Michael, Taylor, and their new friends banding together to rescue Michael's mother, setting the scenario for a sequel. Although the book starts out rather slowly, the pace picked up. Readers will be looking forward to the next book in the series. Gr 5-9-Michael Vey, 14, has problems. Not only does he suffer from Tourette's syndrome, but he also has electricity coursing through his body. He can shock people without rubbing his feet on the carpet; he can jump-start his mother's car by holding the battery connectors and "surging," and he can knock bullies who attack him off their feet. Michael and his mother have moved to Idaho because there was an "incident" in his former town, and now he discovers that the prettiest girl in his new school has powers, too. Taylor can read people's minds. Ostin, Michael's best friend, doesn't have powers, but he is wicked smart and helps them to figure out that there is more to the mystery than the fact that they were born in the same hospital within days of each other. Soon there is a terrifying adventure afoot when they are captured and introduced to others with powers who, under the lead of the sinister Hitch, have kidnapped Michael's mother and have evil plans for the world. The dialogue and interactions among the teens seem more like they belong in the 1950s rather than today, but the fast-paced action and cool powers will probably outweigh any negatives.-Jake Pettit, Thompson Valley High School, Loveland, CO SLJ, November 2011""Michael Vey" is fantastic. My 10 year old son did not really like to read. He would get graphic novels from the school library but he mostly just looked at the pictures. I would try reading books with him but he would loose interest. This summer I decided that we would read this book. I made a deal with him that I would read 4 pages and he would read 2. He likes superheroes so I thought that this would be interesting to him because it was like a real life superhero. We read when I had time during the summer. By the middle of the book he was coming to me asking to read instead of me telling him it was time to read. By the end of the book he was very excited to get to the next one. He started reading the second book on his own because I was taking too long. He is on book three now. He is still very interested and often choses to read instead of watching tv. I am trying to keep up with him and I love the books as well. As a result of actually finding enjoyment in reading these books, I have also noticed that he is now actually reading the graphic novels that he brings home. I can tell he is no longer just looking at the pictures but he is enjoying the story. I did originally buy the e-book version but my son prefers to have the actual book.

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans is the first in the Michael Vey series for teens. This was Mr. Evans' first foray into the world of teen fiction and it was very well done. It's a bit different from other teen books in there isn't the horror and darkness you often encounter. Instead, there's an underlying feeling of hope. There are villains certainly and villains that you would love to hate, but it has an underlying feeling of hope and inspiration. Yet it's not "preachy" either. It strikes just the right balance of conflict, personal growth, and positive messages for teens. The protagonist, Michael Vey, has Tourette's Syndrome. It's rare to find a book where the protagonist is dealing with some sort of syndrome and dealing with it successfully. It's not hidden away in a dark corner. It's shown as something that Michael has to deal with and yet it's not the sole focus of the story. The teenage years are full of angst and uncertainty anyway and to add in a chronic health condition just makes it worse. This book shows teens that they're not alone in their struggles and they can be dealt with. Finally, this book holds your attention. It grabs you and doesn't let go until the end. I read it in one setting because I couldn't put it down! If you have teens in your life and you want them to be reading something other than vampires and zombies, perhaps consider introducing them to the Michael Vey series!

I really enjoyed this book. We purchased it for a teen book club book, and while the teens took issue with some of the story line (I agree parts of it were super cheesy), it was still a very enjoyable read. It was clean, and there was enough character development and action to keep me interested. There isn't a lot of explanation about why things happened, but perhaps later books go into more detail with that. I really liked it.

i just decided to pick this book up since im currently not reading anything else and know its series. The cover always intrigued me when i walked by. This book starts off very slow and childish. Michael is a "loser" with torettes who has a crush on the hottest girl in school (of course) and a nerd for a friend. Eventually the book picks up and we find out about Michael's powers and learn more from his past, this is where you get hooked and can't stop reading. It ends with high hopes for this series, like Harry Potter i'm sure we will see this group of kids mature quickly and lose the innocence.

Michael Vey was a 15 year old boy with electrical powers. He didn't tell anybody except his friend Ostin (and of course his mother knew about it). When he was getting bullied by this group of boys, he electrocuted them from anger. While this happened this girl Taylor was watching, since she had powers too she asked him questions about it and they decided he would come over to her house and talk about it. He found out she had powers like him, but she could read minds, reboot people's minds, and ect. Ostin, Taylor, and Michael had created the clan called the Electroclan, and they would have meetings. Michael and Taylor were invited to this really expensive school which they would take for free. They then find out that it wasn't really a school, but someone trying to capture them. Soon after that, Taylor was kidnapped. When she was at the place where they took her, she found out she had a twin and that they could literally get anything they would want. But they would have to do what Hatch (the one "hunting" them) said. Taylor was told to do something that could get someone killed so she refused. There were a lot of other glows there, and Taylor had a lot of fun until Hatch would make her do something she didn't want to do. Ostin, Michael, and Michael's mother went to eat some place. When they came out Hatch came. He kidnaps Michael's mother, and leaves Michael there. All of this happened when Ostin was inside looking for his sweatshirt. So Ostin and Michael have no other choice but to take Jack and Wade with them because they're the only ones with a car that would drive them. It took a long time to get there, but they finally got there. Michael and Ostin went inside looking for Taylor and Michael's mother. Michael gets caught and was given a choice to either join them or have his mother die. He couldn't choose then, so they kept him in Cell 25 where he was tortured. He finally get's set free of that cell and is put in this room with Taylor and Ostin. Hatch comes in with Zeus and tries to get Michael to join them. Hatch leaves Zeus to do it, but Michael and Taylor win him over. His mother was shocked but she survived. The four of them then had a lot of trouble getting themselves out, but they did it. Wade, Jack, Zeus, Ostin, Taylor, and Michael made it out safely.

a group of 13-14 senior adults who have tired of traditional Bible studies and sunday school lessons chose this book having previously used Fuller's other selected classic readings. We take turns facilitating the weekly discussion which is always lively, informative and motivating. We are not disappointed that we chose this book.

great collection of readings and the reflection at the end of each by Foster is enlightening and eye opening. The mini-biographies given in the beginning of each reading is also encouraging because it removes any pretense of superiority of the author that we might unwittingly bestow him/her and brings the image of the author back down to someone we can relate to and thereby making the reading even more pertinent to our lives, struggles, doubts, fears, and confusions. It's a great book for group discussions, too, because each reading speaks and relates to everyone differently and one can hear many different perspectives on the same topic.

I am part of an informal Bible study group that has been together for several years. These are mostly retirement age folks who have been in church their whole lives. Finding material that leads to new growth in faith is so difficult. When we started this material it was so difficult both intellectually and spiritually that we would have given it up if there had been other suitable material accessible to us. Somehow, as we searched for an alternative, we hit our stride. Each section has been challenging but also strengthening.Spiritual Classics is not for the faint of heart, but it is totally wonderful. Expect every reading to set the bar higher than most of us regularly go in our faith. Don't expect to skim the lesson and be ready to discuss it. These are some of the most respected writers of the Christian faith whether from the mid 1900's or the late 300's. They think deeply and require that you do likewise. You will not come away unchanged.

Short selections of spiritual writings from 52 well known Christians from around the world. Each selection is from a longer work, and is followed by a short biographical sketch, an appropriate Bible selection,. discusson questions, suggested exercises, a reflection by the editor Richard Foster, and suggested further reading, Some selections are from the early Church, some from several centuries ago, and others from recent times. A highly recommended work. I was very impressed with the choice of writers, and with the whole book. It is ideal for use by a Church study group.

I'm a fan of Renovare's work and look forward to tackling this amazing resource. My first reading happened to be my first introduction to Thomas More, (1478-1535). I'm just blown away! Look up Renovare.org and get to know Richard Foster's work in closer detail.

Really enjoy reading from authors I would have never heard of from time periods I normally wouldn't have considered.

Foster and Griffin have put together an excellent book for group or personal use. Readings are arranged according to spiritual disciplines, such as meditations, prayer or fasting. A brief selection of text from famous writers is followed by a Bible reading, questions to be used to understand the readings, exercises, reflections and a bibliography for those who want to delve deeper the topic. It took me a year to get through Foster's first book, Devotional Classics, doing a reading a week. In other words, it's a long term resource to enhance your spiritual life. I really loved this book.

This book is very informative on notable Christians and their contributions to the faith. It's thought provoking, providing an overview, highlights and references for further reading. I've learned quite a bit about individuals of which my pastor has often referred to during his sermons.

About the Author

Al-Ghazâlî (c.1056 1111) was one of the most prominent and influential philosophers, theologians, jurists, and mystics of Sunni Islam. He was active at a time when Sunni theology had just passed through its consolidation and entered a period of intense challenges from Shiite Ismâ îlite theology and the Arabic tradition of Aristotelian philosophy (falsafa). Al-Ghazâlî understood the importance of falsafa and developed a complex response that rejected and condemned some of its teachings, while it also allowed him to accept and apply others. Al-Ghazâlî's critique of twenty positions of falsafa in his Incoherence of the Philosophers (Tahâfut al-falâsifa) is a significant landmark in the history of philosophy as it advances the nominalist critique of Aristotelian science developed later in 14th century Europe. On the Arabic and Muslim side al-Ghazâlî's acceptance of demonstration (apodeixis) led to a much more refined and precise discourse on epistemology and a flowering of Aristotelian logics and metaphysics. With al-Ghazâlî begins the successful introduction of Aristotelianism or rather Avicennism into Muslim theology. After a period of appropriation of the Greek sciences in the translation movement from Greek into Arabic and the writings of the falâsifa up to Avicenna (Ibn Sînâ, c.980 1037), philosophy and the Greek sciences were naturalized into the discourse of kalâm and Muslim theology (Sabra 1987). Al-Ghazâlî's approach to resolving apparent contradictions between reason and revelation was accepted by almost all later Muslim theologians and had, via the works of Averroes (Ibn Rushd, 1126 98) and Jewish authors a significant influence on Latin medieval thinking. -- Griffel, Frank, "Al-Ghazali", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Summer 2013 Edition), Edward N. Zalta (ed.)

I purchased this book for an elementary education class which promotes educating children through music. This book was excellent on so many levels. It not only provided songs of different backgrounds and genres but it also allowed for the use of storytelling and books to underguird the learning process. I will definately use this book for many years to come.

I love this book. The music and the singing are excellent. The songs and stories are included in the CD and book.

This book should be priced lower since there is no Audio or Video when using on Kindle 3.I also was charged tax, but live outside of US. I returned the book and when I wanted to purchase it again, it's price increased by $1-something.

This book is full of useful information for the first-time cruiser, or experienced cruiser heading down the thorny path for the first time (or second or third for that matter.) I'm a yacht delivery captain and the info in this book has been quite helpful in a number of ways. Bruce covers all aspects of the trip, most importantly, weather forecasting and route planning and safe harbors specific to this neck of the woods. The info for clearing customs etc., along the way is of course useful as well, as are the notes on some of the services and provisioning spots. There are other guides that are a wealth of information on these last two topics, but as for a "How-To", hands on guide by someone who has been there, done that, this book is pretty invaluable. If you can get past some of the Holier-than-thou sounding attitude that occasionally surfaces, you'll find everything you need to make a safe voyage. My two cents, even if it is repetetive of Bruce's advice...take your time. Wait for the weather. Some of the crossings can get pretty nasty - especially the Mona. What he says about hourglass shoals is accurate. Avoid as much of it as you can. And the Night Lee effect can be used in many places with a large landmass and warm weather...including the DR, as Bruce mentions. But it's not always there, so don't bank on it. Sometimes the prevailing winds are too strong to get settled by it. Wait for your good windows, it'll be worth it. It's definitely a windward slog, but one that can be done safely, and somewhat comfortably, if you follow the good advice in this book.

Bruce Van Sant is more than a little over-bearing in his style. Smug and self-congratulatory are his middle names. That said, the man has written an excellent, excellent book chock-full of insights, caveats, how-to's,and how-NOT to's, right down to a great but simple recipe for beer bread! There are at least a dozen good books you should have on board when you depart Fort Lauderdale for the Islands and boy, this is ONE of them for sure. Buy it! You will read it again and again.

this book was a great help bring a sixty ft pig boat to manzinillo.( aft dog house 471 detroit) found it in take one leave one libaray in nassugot a copy on amazon for like five bucks a few years ago when i first bought my current boat. but now it sells for 350++$ WTF.Has anyone got his new book and does it have same info?

This book was recommended to us by fellow cruisers that followed the author's path south. I found it very enlightening as we are about to venture south with our boat. A lot of practical and well experienced advice.

The definitive guide for this trip. Don't leave home without it.Clear & well written. Tells you what you need to know.Bob

This is a must have guide for a first time crusier as we are if your going to ventured south saftley.

Bruce Van Sant may be opinionated about the best way to take a cruising boat down the "Thorny Path," but those opinions are based on years of experience. Not everyone agrees with everything he's written, but even those who disagree (typically on one detail or another) will tell you that in general Van Sant's methods are based on sound principles. He gives you strategies if not a way of life that has worked for him for decades. Best of all, when you get to Luperon in the Dominican Republic you can look him up and tell him how the trip has gone so far.

This is a great guide book with lots of good information. Everyone sailing from the US or the Bahamas to the Caribbean should have this book. The author has a plan for getting to the Caribbean without beating up yourself or your boat -- the thornless path. Even if you don't follow that advice I think the book is worth having. We took the offshore route instead of island hopping like he suggests, but I still found the book valuable and think I learned a lot from it.
