This book is really wonderful. The writing style is funny and light but also full of information and facts. The Doctor 9 ( Dr. Wendorf, not the Doctore as in Doctor Who. That's an entirely different genre) somehow manages give really useful information about various common types of mental illness, weirdness (his words) craziness (also his word) types of suicide etc without making this book totally depressing or dry. He is self depreciating at times, making himself sympathetic and easy for the reader to relate to. This is somehow better than any text book I have ever read on the subject and also entertaining. This man has talent. The characters - his patients- are all the people that you and I know. They are the weird, the quirky, the slightly different, the totally normal on the surface. They are you, me, our parents, siblings, friends and co workers. We are ALL different and we all have our quirks. The author talks about what is just a quirk or a personality trait and what is an actual condition that needs to be treated. He discusses the variations of 'normal' and how normal depends entirely on the time frame and society the in question is living in. He points out how science is fallible, doctors aren't perfect, sometimes solutions are elusive. Sometimes they are immediate and unexpected. Sometimes they are pure blind luck. Sometimes they are impossible. Often times they are a compromise- no one is perfect because there IS no perfect. Often the 'cure' or solution is finding what works for that person without adversely affecting society at large even if you and I and the general standards of our time necessarily look at the lifestyle this person that has been 'cured' chooses to live as productive. If the patient is happy, healthy, relatively productive and not hurting anyone - including himself-, the rest is just details. He also de - mystifies the conditions and terms we hear tossed around every day.I have enjoyed reading this book tremendously. I have highlighted, quotes and emailed sections of this book in greater quantities than I usually do and I am happy I purchased it because I am happy to have it on hand to refer back to. This book should be required reading in school, maybe it will help our future leaders and professionals, mothers, fathers, failures and degenerates have a little more self awareness and more empathy for those around them.

I am an old student of Dr. Wendorf and waited nearly ten years to see this book hit the shelves. In that time I went from student to professional. The knowledge from his classes helped to prepare me for the real world in treating clients. You have to be creative and think outside the box in treatment. A manual does not properly prepare you for most real world client issues. This book is a collection of many of his lessons told through examples of real people he treated during his career. Each section focuses on a different mental illness and how Dr. Bob treated that client. The chapters are thought provoking, hilarious, and even tear jerking as you take a ride through a man's career and the lessons he learned. This is not a text book with boring non-human descriptions. The clients are real and their personas are perfectly described and molded in the book. You really get the feel of the personalities of each client as you read about them. A connection is made to that person and I often found myself smiling as I read about their journey through treatment as their lives changed before my eyes. I actually kept my notes from those classes years ago and used them as a guide to creative treatment. This book serves that same purpose. If you want a road map to treatment and a humanistic grasp on mental illness, how it effects real people, and how to treat them, then read this book.

I can't read the rest of this book. I hated the intro mostly because the clinicians voice is simplistic, placating and somewhat dismissive of the people whose lives he describes. I read the first chapter because i don't give up easily. There is a nice message about ping pong therapy. I really believe Dr. Wendorf cares for and resprcrfully interacts with his patients. I just can't read anymore sentences that read like this, "schizophrenic patients hear voices telling them to kill people and slice them up for luncheon meat." This simplistic yet hyperbolic writing style perpetuates misunderstanding of mental illness and human condition and adds nothing to the public understanding. Maybe this is a good book, probably Dr. Wendorf is a great psychologist and person. About the book, I have serious doubts and can't make it past the last sentence I just read: "He is described further in Chapter Eight on 'Truly Crazy People.'"

"Tales From the Couch" is an entertainingly informative book covering many different cases, from those who are brain diseased to those Dr Bob Wendorf labels as 'normal' people who have psychological problems due to their childhood traumas or current stressful situations. The book covers a wide range of conditions, from schizophrenia to aspergers, from the narcissist to the junkie, etc. With most of his patients, Dr Wendorf demonstrates an intuitive understanding and compassion. He states that not all problems can be dealt with via textbook knowledge and that success for him has also been attained by listening to his feelings. He speaks candidly about his least favourite types of patients and why they are often hopeless cases to treat. But he always tries. Whether you are a student of psychology or simply a layperson with an avid interest in the complexities of the human mind, this book is a must to read.

I expected a book with similar perspective and respect for patients that one sees in the work of Oliver Sacks, but this book is disrespectful of patients, and is full of biased and simplistic opinion disguised as analysis. The author applies single-cause fallacies to explain complex problems. An utter waste of time.
