This is one of the best books I've read in a very very long time. I often like to read the murder mystery / police procedural / thriller type books. I'm not usually too picky, and I try to find whatever I can that's a free Kindle download. They're usually what I call 'airport books' - entertaining, but not necessarily great. This book, even though it was a free Kindle download, was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.The story line was entertaining, believable, likable, interesting and mysterious. The characters were complex without having too much unnecessary backstory. The pace of the story kept moving and never felt like it was dragging just to fill pages. The unique characters throughout made for great interactions and conflicts. Possibly the greatest feat - the editing was superb! Bad editing is usually my biggest pet peeve with Kindle books. I noticed zero errors in this book.The story starts quickly with a murdered woman in a farm house. The police come to investigate, and from then on there are twists and turns throughout. You're never completely certain who the bad guy/girl is until it's revealed near the end.I cannot wait to read more from this author. I've already downloaded 2 more of Joy Ellis's books...I hope they live up to the standard this one set! If you enjoy this type of mystery you won't be sorry with this one!

An excellent story about a police department trying to solve a serial murder case while dealing with several fragile suspects. There are several subplots which add a great deal to the story. One of the subplots would actually make a pretty good plot for another story. The two major characters are both both very easy to develop a bond with which makes the story more interesting.This book is definitely worth reading.

I just today finished THE MURDERERS SON. It was a compelling British crime thriller that grabbed me until the end. 2 detectives, one head strong widowed female and the other rugged handsome and emotionally powerful man. Together they make the best partnership. Both are determined to grab the bad guy but protective and intuitive of each other. This evil character shares a past. But too much information can ruin It. Just be prepared to keep it open until the end. And to want more of these characters.

Really enjoyed this book. The struggles of a young man trying to cope with the idea that his mother was a killer and feels he has inherited the same trait. With lapse of memories could he be the killer. Do the police believe he is the killer or is there someone else. Do they continue searching or do they have their guy. The young man certainly believes he is a killer. Are his memories twisted, is it something he read, or are the memories real? Lots of suspense.

Well developed characters and great plot twists. I actually read the second book first..but they are stand alone enough. I was very fond of the cast and hope more stories are coming!

Loved it. Lots of characters but easy to distinguish. Keeps you in suspense until the end....I did not guess the ending. About a young man who thinks he's a killer and confesses to murder. Is he? Or is he the product of a bad background? He has fugue incidents and doesn't really remember. I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I wish she'd written another book about these characters. I found only two about them. She has several other series that are worth looking into.

Let me give you advance warning - make sure your calendar is clear because once you start this amazing book, I assure you that you will not want to stop until you have devoured the book in its entirety. Wonderful characters, amazing writing and plenty of twists and turns. I honestly had no idea who the murderer was until the author revealed the name. Get the book - you won't regret it!!

Too many inefficient twists& turns, not to mention several that involve WAY too many convenient personal relationships. The intended shock factor just wasn't there, had figured out the culprit about 60% through the book. The big climax was busy and rather far- fetched. Didn't HATE it, could have been really good with a bit less effort to muddle up everything to keep the reader "in supense". Threw a bit TOO much together at the last minute.

I learned a lot about German Jewish cooking. Having married a "Yekkeh", this explained a lot of things, like my husband's parents' obsession with asparagus! My MIIL served it every day when it was in season. To the point where my husband wouldn't eat asparagus for about 40 years. I do wish the book hadn't been as entirely focused on Washington Heights. My husband grew up in Salt Lake City, where they also kept up some of these food traditions, but where there were just a few German Jewish families. He didn't meet other Yekkehs until he was an adult on the East Coast.

I recognized many foods that my grandmother made and now I can't wait to make them myself. Many other receipes are new to me but I look forward to trying them (some I will be happy to just read and imagine).The book is well researched, full of interesting stories and beautifully laid out. The resource section for some of the more difficult to find ingredients is helpful.It is so fitting that a mother/daughter team wrote this together. Bringing family and history together with food. Yum.

Amazing book! Entertaining, informative, tasty recipes helping preserve a unique culture. I highly recommend this for anyone exploring their roots or wanting to connect to Jewish-German culture.

My grandparents are German Jewish and came here after WWII. I bought this book for my mom, who also grew up in Washington Heights. The book brought up so many memories for both of us. My favorite part was the passage about Oma always setting the breakfast table the night before and everything being out when I woke up in the morning. Made me cry because of all the memories it brought up.

This is a wonderful cookbook. It brings back many memories of the great dishes my grandmother and parents made! Great recipes, photos, and stories.

This book reflects my upbringing -- not only the food and family history, but the actual NY neighborhood in which I grew up. It brought back so many memories that I bought 8 or 9 copies for many of my relatives. Their response was generally "Wow, where did you find this? It brought back so many good memories of making XXXX with my mother/grandmother/favorite aunt, . . ."

I decided to purchase this cookbook because it reminds me of my heritage. My parents come from the same city as the the parentsOf the author. The recipes were phenomenal and will try many of them. This is a well thought out cookbook. Actually, it’s more than a cookbook. The history of the Jews in Germany and transition to New York while keeping their food and religious traditions alive make the cookbook a very important record. It struck me as a labor of love. You can taste homemade comfort in all the recipes.The recipes are clearly written and delicious! I highly recommend this cookbook.

But UNTANGLING EMOTIONS explains that even the negative emotions do have a purpose, and that Christ and God felt/feel emotions, too; the key is understanding the why and how of emotions and expressing them appropriately. In other words, even people of faith aren’t all happy all the time. They get angry or sad, too, but they can learn how to express that anger appropriately. (Aren’t there passages in the Bible when Jesus himself was very angry or in deep grief?) J. Alasdair Groves and Winston T. Smith wrote this relatively brief book discussing this very topic. Their style is simple, very approachable, engaging, and well-organized. There are Bible citations (English Standard Version only, thank you!), citations from other sources, as well as interesting anecdotes supporting their claims and giving both positive and negative examples. Some of the anecdotes are personal; when the authors do go into first person (“I”), it is clear which one of them the “I” is, Alasdair or Winston. Most of the chapters end with questions for reflection, making this an excellent book for either group or personal study; I highly recommend this book for church libraries.

Emotions are all the rage today, from "doing what feels right" to "getting in touch with your emotions." From a Christian point of view, the questions are these: What should we think about our emotions, and what should we do with them? This book, "Untangling Emotions," answers these two questions and gives more wise information about human emotions.In the first part of the book, the authors talk about the fact that emotions are part of being human and aren't necessarily bad. They also note that emotions are complex and they typically have to do with things we love, value, and treasure (p. 35). I appreciate how the authors also mentioned that emotions are a necessary part of relationships.In the second part of the book, the authors talk about engaging our emotions. There's a balance: emotions shouldn't rule us, nor should we totally ignore our emotions. Instead, we should engage them, ask questions of them, take them to God, nourish healthy emotions, and starve unhealthy emotions.In the last part of the book the authors put these principles to use by discussing the emotions of fear, anger, grief, and guilt. It's sort of the "practical application" section of the book.I did appreciate and enjoy this book. It's not a deep Ph.D. level study of emotions, nor is it an exegetical resource to study emotions that show up in Scripture. Instead, it's the insights of two wise Christian counselors/pastors reflecting systematically and biblically on the topic of emotions. My only slight critique of the book is that it sometimes is a bit wordy for my taste. That is, sometimes the authors explained a relatively simple concept in several pages when they could've done so on one page. Again, it's a minor critique but it's something I noticed. No big deal, though - this is a helpful book and I recommend it!

It's how we act or fuel our emotions that can make a difference. Think of anger management, accept and offer forgiveness instead of indulging in shame and guilt, and forest the fruit of the Holy Spirit amidst adverse situations or emotions. The authors untangle different emotions, from grief and anger to joy and plea for a conscious way to respond to your emotions, including how you feel about how you feel. It is of vital importance to your relationship with God and others in your life. Our emotions are one of the most common and commonly misunderstood opportunities in our lives to grow in maturity and love.Emotions happen in our body, yet we live in a historical moment where the tendency is to overstate the role of the body. Our souls and flesh are interwoven. Understanding the mechanics of the brain is not the same as understanding how to live rightly before the Lord. We were made to respond with love for what is good and hatred for what is evil. No matter how much we come to understand the biology of our brains, we will still always need to wrestle with our emotions as expressions of what we love. Helping your respond with godly maturity to your emotions, good, bad and ugly, is the core message of this book, that involves a lot of theology and less on neuroscience.

Best Russian maps I've seen! If those with clout would look at these maps, they would better understand why Putin and friends do what they do.

Engrossing, sharp portraits, compelling maps, a whirlwind invasion and education done with graphics and text that lets you feel you grasp mother Russia on the largest scale. Scholarly, but not plodding. A visual delight, and a truly "big picture." Perfect accompaniment to a detailed historical text.

Great combination of maps and information. A great book for both those who are familiar with Russia and those who are relatively new to the subject.

The best thing about this atlas from my point of view, is that I can visually locate the relationship between places both geographical and otherwise (towns, etc.) in a country which covers a fifth of the earth's landmass. The authors blessedly supplied maps of the parts of Russia relevant to the various historical topics. Now I know where the Urals are, the location of the great rivers, whether the various cities and towns are north, south, east or west of each other. Maps that attempt to show the whole country at once physically distort everything and always lack detail. I have some problems with Mr. Barnes' and his co-author's interpretation of events, but it hardly matters because the maps themselves are wonderful.

Another good historical atlas of Russia. For my interests, I would have preferred more pagesspent on Kievan period. But overall, very good.

Very well done. Great illustrations and superior, explanatory text.

If you believe geography is destiny, you'll need read no further. Beautifully written and evocative of the Russian spirit.
