If you have DocBook markup that you need to turn into html or pdf YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT THIS BOOK! That's right I'm shouting. This book is really that important, and that well written. Do bear in mind that you need to know a thing or two about XSLT and XSL-FO or you won't understand a thing you are reading.The DocBook stylesheets have been carefully written to be both customizable and extensible; after all, no two organizations are likely to have the same format requirements for their documents. This book describes how you can develop your own customization layer between the DocBook stylesheets and your formatted document. Most developers, even those with a lot of time on their hands, would be unlikely to discover all of the techniques described in this book for accomplishing that task.This book is especially useful if you need to produce pdf documents using XSL-FO. The html output is nice but you can easily format it with CSS. XSL-FO is a large and complex specification for marking up text and images to produce pdf documents. XSL-FO is so detailed that it takes a ton of markup to create even a modest document. The DocBook stylesheets generate a ton and a half of XSL-FO markup and the beauty of the techniques described in this book is that you only modify those things that represent the special needs of your document. I totally agree with previous reviewers, this book is essential.

This book MUST be on your bookshelf if you do any work with docbook and use the standard stylesheets. It is true that the contents of the book are fully available online as HTML documents, but that is no substitute for having the printed book in your hands if you need to do extensive work. Bob Stayton covers nearly all aspects of user customization available in the stylesheets from simply setting a few parameter values (which can be done from the command line in most cases) to writing or rewriting templates for extensive user customization.

I purchased that book as soon as it came out: I just knew I'd need it some day. That day came three weeks ago and I got into the book with a vengeance. I needed to utterly customize the docbooks stylesheets and produce 12'000 different pdf's in four languages out of a huge documentation DB. With the book next to me it was a breeze. Extremely well written, knowledgeable, accurate, just verbose enough to get the point across and and and.Beware: this is a book for people who are already very well versed in docbook in general, and in XSL in particular.One does wish the author would have offered ant versions of his scripts as well as Make versions. But that's a matter of taste.

Yes, I know there is another manual but it's more of a starter. This is the book you need to help you figure out how to actually make Docbook work. I keep it by my side (and have advised an intern working in Docbook to do so as well). This book needs to be beside the computer (and I do mean RIGHT beside) anyone who is attempting to support or modify docbook applications for the first time. Do that, and you may just be able to put away the extra strength excedrin. Without it, you might have a few problems......Here's why:Last year, I had the pleasure of implementing docbook for a large company down in Oklahoma. However, I didn't know much about XSL at the time or for that matter docbook; other than how to markup documents and make changes to the DTD. In other words I was a rookie. I had two tools at my disposal; the definative guide and docbook documentation. Any developer would understand what a rookie who is trying to muddle through docbook documentation is trying to go through..... I had a bit of consulting from Arbortext but other than that I was on my own. The definitive guide has very little information on publishing XML information and barely even mentions XSL. Thus, my modifications consisted of looking at existing code and attempting a patch job. Even with the training I'd had on XSLT it did not help me to find files that I didn't know existed. This book solves that problem and gets you off the ground running.While the book is NOT a tututorial on XSL is does give a brief overview on the subject. This book talks about implementing XSL in a docbook environment as there are plenty of books in the market that teach you how to code XSL. An understanding of XML is expected and knowledge of docbook is certainly helpful. Topics covered include how to find docbooks XSL stylesheets (or obtain them for free, if you don't already have them)and tells you how to set them up, customize them for your environment, use special stylesheet output features and work with docbook options.In short, if you need to learn how to implement XSL in a docbook environment; get this book in your hands and don't let it go. It's too valuable a commodity!

You have to read through a lot of blah, blah, blah..."we walked down the hall...it smelled like cement" to get to the point of each chapter. I get the premise that you don't want to bore people with the details of taxes and accounting. BUT here's the rub, you just bought a book to learn about taxes and accounting. So maybe I want some of those details. He gives you just enough to get you interested so want to go to a CPA (him maybe) and pay for the details. This is the second book I've read from a professional recently that the whole book was one big sales pitch for their business. Genius! And they get us to PAY for the sales pitch.In all seriousness, you will get some interesting tidbits of strategies. And depending on where you are, just starting or experienced business owner, will depend on how much you get. I didn't learn anything new until the last few strategies of pay your family, rental properties and self directed 401k's. You could get more out of it. But he doesn't explain anything in detail to the point where you could do anything with just this book. I can't really recommend it.

A few nuggets of great ideas about the necessity of owning rental property, but to get to these points you have to plod through hundreds of pages of useless anecdotes about high-five-ing his brother in law and smiling at his wife. Who cares. Just get to the bottom line.

I have owned my business for almost a decade and have gone through my fair share of bookkeepers and CPAs. None of them have shared this kind of information with me. I read this book and an afternoon and I have far more confidence about my financial future than I have ever had. I highly recommend this book for anybody who is a small business owner or who is thinking about becoming a small business owner. I am sick to my stomach to think that I did not have this information for many many years, but I am excited about the future now that I have it.

Provided nothing profound. Overall a pretty lightweight resource and probably not much value to anyone already running their own business. On a positive note, however, the diagrams comparing S Corp, C Corp, and LLC were useful.

Very easy book to read. Shouldn’t take more than a day. I’ve learned so much! It’s more than real estate, don’t be fooled by other comments. If you are looking to get an idea of how badly you need to get your house in order, this book will do just that. I recommend this book to every small business and potential new business owners just so they know what really goes behind a successful business when it comes to taxes.

Another great book to read for finding out what may not be in a CPA's best interest to tell you, or who lacks knowledge to share with you. There are bookkeepers, accountants, CPA's, and then there are CPAs that have actually thought about the law they try to work within. This is info from a lawyer/CPA who is able to see this from both points of view.

The book could be made a lot more succinct. It does have some good ideas, such as HSA, business deductions for children working in the family business, real estate deductions, and self directed IRA's. But I feel the book is not being completely honest in many ways. For example, the thing about real estate deductions - even losses - when this is really not that easy to get. If you want to be a "real estate" professional for irs tax purposes, you first have to satisfy stringent (and some say impossible to satisfy) rules ... and even when you think you do, you will inevitably raise audit red flags if you do take non-trivial amounts of deductions.About real estate in general, you also don't get to write off that much - depreciating value of improvement - not land - over 27.5 (or 49 for commercial) properties. What you do deduct, you also also do have to pay capital gains later. Yes capital gains is delayed, and yes capital gains is supposed to be taxed lower, but don't forget you have to pay property tax, maintenance, etc. over the years. I am not saying real estate doesn't offer a tax benefit, much have been written about it. And whether it is good depends on many factors, but the tax benefit should be considered tangential, not primary. What drives you to real estate investment should be the business of real estate investing, not tax.Also about self directed iras, one needs to be very careful about the many "prohibited transactions." The book barely touch on that. If one isn't careful, one might even think that one can use self directed iras to fund one's small business ideas when it's strictly prohibited!About HSAs. Yes, it's a good idea. But remember you have to keep careful receipts of ALL medical expenses. Also - when I was shopping last year, HSA premiums seemed pretty high, too. Again, for some this can work ... for others (say a family of four, including 2 young children), it depends...

There's not really any good tax strategies in this book. Don't waste your time reading it.

Book 2 was great...perfect follow up to book 1. Definitely looking forward to the next book. Hopefully the series doesn't go on too long. I enjoyed how the characters developed and evolved from the first book and the story wasn't predictable.

If you have not read this series before, ignore the fact that this is the 21st book and just read it. Dave Robicheaux is one of the best characters in modern American crime literature. Yes, I said literature. James Lee Burke has a command of the English language far beyond that of many writers considered literary. There's beauty in the way he describes Louisiana and, more importantly, its people. He's a good man who has a lot of demons. At his core, however, he's incredibly smart and devoted to both his family and doing right. Robicheaux's struggle with alcohol is epic- and Burke writes about it with great understanding and empathy. He may have lost his wife and his. beloved raccoon Tripod but he's still got his daughter Alafair (just google her) and best of all his old buddy Clete. Clete is a man of excess but he too is devoted to doing the right thing and most of all to Dave. As always, this is a complicated novel full of twists and turns, good guys and bad guys, and it's deeply rewarding. This time there's a writer, his wife, a populist politician, interesting police officers, the usual mob guys, and an assassin, One special thing- Burke once again commends the US Coast Guard for its good work during Katrina. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I can't recommend this highly enough.

I love James Lee Burke's work. But, not even he can hit a home run every time. While his worst writing is better than 90 percent of all other fiction, he can still produce a dud now and then. Robicheaux, titled for his signature character, is a good read. It just is not up to par with much of his previous work. I usually highlight every other page and passage because Burke's prose is so arresting and beautiful. I think I highlighted four or five passages in this book. It just isn't as rich and poetic as usual. There were also lots of typos in this one -- another anomaly. I think Burke was trying to tie up some things in this book. Dave and Clete's long friendship and partnership for one. It didn't work. I also think he was trying to comment on life in the US after the 2016 election. If so, he never really made his point. The book still gets four stars. Burke's grocery list would get that from me. But, I was a bit disappointed.

I have always said that it is impossible to rank JLB’s books because they are all superb. It is the case, however, that ROBICHEAUX is a classic in the Robicheaux series. Why? Because it hits all of that series’ major themes: the haunting nature of a past that embodies both great evil and great valor; the nature of alcohol addiction and how it feels and how it distorts your life; the experience of Vietnam at the personal, cultural and historic levels; the bond between men and women who work the streets and try to stem the tide of crime, sin and corruption. All of which is to say that, yes, we see a great deal of Clete Purcel here—a combination friend, boon companion, tempter and avenging angel. We also (as we often do in JLB’s work) find ourselves on a movie set, a set that offers a perspective on both past and present and the manner in which both good men/women and bad aspire to shape reality.The plot is ‘classic’ as well: a wounded detective with a larger-than-life partner encounters a series of individuals (an aspiring politician, a race-baiting manipulator, a prominent writer, a professional criminal, et al.), each one of whom might have been responsible for murder. The twist here: the detective himself may have been responsible for a murder during a blackout. Thus, to solve the crimes is to find both personal and professional redemption. Throw in a professional hitman who carries a great deal of belly fat, has red lips, a fondness for licorice and a personal arsenal and the picture is nearly complete. There is also an odd Burkean touch. Here, Dave Robicheaux, has an orphaned, adopted daughter named Alafair; in real life Jim Burke has a daughter named Alafair. In each case the two women went to Reed College and Stanford for law school. Another variation on that curious theme: the writer in ROBICHEAUX has written a book entitled WHITE DOVES AT MORNING—the name of an actual title by JLB.All else is as expected: stunning writing with descriptive passages that sparkle on the page without becoming purple; exquisite, appropriate violence when it is deserved; memorable characters; a setting that is so rich and so nicely realized that it hovers over the book as a constant presence and an ending that is both totally appropriate for the story and philosophically haunting.Just a couple samples of the writing:“He was handsome in the way that superficial people are, his jaw firm, his teeth capped, his manner easy and detached, as though a greater world awaited his presence” (p. 292).“If there are angels among us, as St. Paul suggests, I believed Clete was one of them, his wings auraed with smoke, his cloak rolled in blood, his sword broken in battle but unsurrendered and unsheathed, a protector whose genus went back to Thermopylae and Masada” (p. 322).I would include the concluding lines of the book but I don’t want to spoil their effect on the book as a whole.Bottom line: another fine book from JLB. Don’t miss it.

Ok, I’m over it. I gave 3 stars only because I love Dave Robicheaux but it’s not worth it. He’s run his course as has James Lee Burke who, in my humble opinion, is one of the best writers of all time. Frankly, his raging against Louisiana, big oil, the rich, environmental disaster, crooks, punks, pukes, hit men, and the like is getting old and now is just self serving... though self serving for what I don’t know. People do dumb things constantly and have giant lapses of reason but if I read another page about working for hoodlums or wealthy gangsters who want to make movie all the while knowing how monstrous they are, I think I’ll die. Even Dudley DoRight’s girlfriend, Nell, had more smarts than Robicheaux/Burke's daughter. Buy the book if you’re a fan, I know you can’t help yourself (like me) but it’s time to switch and give another author a try. There’s a much truth to the adage ‘quit while you’re ahead.’

Very disappointed. Almost 100 pages of the book are drawings that do not relate specifically to carving. Some look like children's coloring book drawings the others are OK sketches of animals that one could draw or find elsewhere. There is NOTHING in those drawings to illustrate any carving techniques, or how they would be carved. There are 3 pages of "animal reference photos". Umm I can find hundreds of similar photos by simply using the Internet. More useful would be examples of animal carvings in various stages of completion.I have only briefly glanced at the first 5 chapters, it does look as though there are some useful thoughts there, we shall see. Mostly I resent that over half the book is "filler". It looks as though she wrote 73 pages and realized that that was not long enough to be considered a book so cobbled together the aforementioned drawings and photos.

This is a very good introduction into wildlife relief carving. I have carved for years, but never did relief carving. The book offers very good instruction and then leads the reader through a step-by-step relief carving. Moreover, the lasting value of the book is the large number of wildlife patterns that can be used for ongoing projects. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book after reading other reviews and viewing the included picture templates from another web site. The book was exactly as I expected. The information concerning the use of carving tools gave me a better understanding of how to improve my carving skills and highlighted a few carving techniques I haven't read before. Great book for beginners. Full page templates. Easy and quick read.

This is a great book for an intermediate carver I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner starting out.

Wonderful book for the beginner carver...has lots of detailing, tips, and instructions. I recommend this book highly.

Based on the table of contents shown and the few pictures of the "cutting depths" for the buffalo, I thought this book would go into more detail about depths. WRONG!!! The line pictures and shaded pictures are good IF you can visualize how to layer your cuts.I am extremely disappointed in my purchase but won't send it back to Amazon as they did nothing wrong. I know I will never purchase another Lora S. Irish book on carving unless I can actually see what is in the book first.If you have the talent to know what areas should be cut to what depth, then I guess the pictures are worth it. BUT if you are a beginner looking for a HOW TO book on relief carving this certainly is not it.I will put this on eBay to get rid of it and try to recoup some of my wasted money.

Good for beginners.

This book has a lot of good ideas to practice relief wood carving. It does assume you have some sort of carving skills. It's a great reference book for my collection. I bought the book "used". The book looked "New". No markings at all throughout.

I received this book as a gift and expected it to contain massage instructions. As a brand new mom, I don't have leisure to enjoy long narrative about the benefits of massage. This book contains few images and only a fraction of the book is actual guides on how to massage a baby. I found the descriptions to be confusing and difficult to understand when time is of the essence. I should mention that I have a doctorate, yet I still found this book difficult to follow when it came to the instructions on how to massage.

If you are expecting a baby, if your baby has already arrived or if you are looking for a gift for someone - this is a great book! It is a sublimation of decades of personal experience and thousands of years of tradition. This is not a book meant to tell you what do to, it is a book that will offer new ideas, new points of view and potentially broaden your parenting horizons.More importantly, the book supports the parents as being the experts on their babies, and respects the baby's ability to teach and guide the parent. I believe that attunement, synchronicity, empathy and love are what propelled the author to create this handbook.
