Below I compare three modern translations: each an excellent alternative in comparison to other translations out there, such as old style Pickthall/Asad/Ali or Saudi influenced Hilali-Khan.~Basmalah~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.MAS Abdel Haleem:: In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy!Tarif Khalidi:: In the name of God, Merciful to all, Compassionate to each!~31:18~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: Moreover, do not turn your cheek to people [in contempt]. And do not ever walk upon the earth proudly exultant. Indeed, God loves no one who is swaggering [or] boastful.MAS Abdel Haleem:: Do not turn your nose up at people, nor walk about the place arrogantly, for God does not love arrogant or boastful people.Tarif Khalidi:: Do not turn your cheek away from people in contempt, and do not walk merrily upon the earth: God loves not every swaggering snob.My Opinion:: In regard to walking, Khalidi missed the sense of proudness and only mentions merrily, while Haleem missed the sense of being exultant and only mentions arrogance. Haleem, in addition, does not provide a literal translation, i.e. cheek, rather gives a more well-known idiom in English "turn up nose". Hammad seems to be more accurate.~49:13~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: O humankind! Indeed, We have created [all of] you from a [single] male and female. Moreover, We have made you peoples and tribes, so that you may [come to] know one another. And, indeed, the noblest of you, in the sight of God, is the most God-fearing of you. Indeed God is all-knowing, all-aware.MAS Abdel Haleem:: People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should get to know one another. In God's eyes, the most honoured of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware.Tarif Khalidi:: O mankind, We created you male and female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may come to know one another. The nobles among you in God's sight are the most pious. God is All-Knowing, All-Experienced.My Opinion:: Not sure if Khalidi intentionally omitted the preposition "from", but by saying "created you male and female", withdrawing the preposition (originally in Arabic "min") changes the scope of the verse. Also by saying God is "All-experienced", Khalidi missed the point of God being continuously all-aware. Another important word here is atQaakum, which is related at-Taqwa and Muttaqun, which is usually translated to mean God-fearing or God-conscious. I feel Hammad again captures it better. But "mindful of God" as Haleem presents and "pious" as Khalidi translates are not wrong either.~67:5~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: For very truly, We have adorned the nearest heaven with lights. And we have made [of] them, [as well] projectiles to [pelt] the satans. Moreover, We have prepared for [the satans in the Hereafter] the torment of the Flaming Fire [of Hell].MAS Abdel Haleem:: We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made them [missiles] for stoning devils for whom We have also prepared the torment of a blazing fire.Tarif Khalidi:: We adorned the lower sky with Lanterns, and made them to be volleys against the demons, for whom We have readied the torment of the Blaze.My Opinion:: Each of Hammad, Haleem and Khalidi translates "Shayateen" as satans, devils and demons respectively. All conveys the meaning. Hammad uses too many brackets to convey contextual meaning, which sometimes can get mouthful. Heleem seems have done the best here.~78/1-3~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: About what are they asking one another? About the Great Tiding [of the Afterlife]--it is about this that they dispute.MAS Abdel Haleem:: What do they question about the momentous announcement over which they differ?Tarif Khalidi:: What is it that they question each other about? Is it the Great Proclamation, concerning which they differ?My Opinion:: Here Haleem does not add "each other" or "one another", which changes the scope of the verse. Are they question directed to God, to the Prophet or to each other?~79/1~Ahmad Zaki Hammad:: By the [angelic] pullers, pulling forth violently [the souls of the disbelievers at death]!MAS Abdel Haleem:: By the forceful chargersTarif Khalidi:: By those that dispatch, to the very limit!My Opinion:: Many translate first five verses of this chapter to include interpretations such as "angels", "winds", "stars", "herd of horses" etc. But these interpretations should not be in the body of the actual translation. All of three translators fall short here. Hammad adds angels in the bracket. Haleem, too, falls short here. He, in his footnote, remarks that in his opinion military horses are the most likely interpretation. As such his translation seems to be forced to match the description of a herd of military horses going out. Khalidi follows the logic similar to that of Haleem. Ignoring the brackets, Hammad provides the best translation, IMO.~103:1-3~Ahmad Zaki Hammad::By [the decline of] Time!Indeed, humankind is in [a condition of utter] loss--except for those who believe and do righteous deeds--and exhort one another to [uphold] the truth, and exhort one another to [persevere in faith with] patience.MAS Abdel Haleem::By the fading day, man is [deep] in loss, except for those who believe, do good deeds, urge one another to the truth, and urge one another to steadfastness.Tarif Khalidi::By the afternoon!Man is surely amiss!All save those who believe,Who do righteous deeds,Who enjoin truth upon one anotherWho enjoin patience upon one another.~~~My Conclusion:: Quran can't be properly translated into any other language to convey 100% of the meaning. In my opinion, Hammad provides the most accurate translation. The brackets can get mouthful, but are very useful in providing context. Haleem's translation flows the best. He does not always provide literal translation but uses excellent uses of footnotes. In some places, his penchant for shorter and friendlier translation, he omits a word or two. Khalidi also falls to some error due to his desire for more poetic presentation. Hammad 5/5. Haleem 5/5. Khalidi 4/5. God knows best.

I am a Christian and I recommend this to any Christian who wants to understand true Islam. The introduction and notes are really helpful.

As a Christian, I wanted to respectfully read for myself the Quran. I was interested to see any inferences towards extremism and to understand better what millions of people hold as sacred. It was interesting and educational. A book created in what you might call the dark ages, which brought rules and codes of conduct, as well as spiritual guidance to its readers who were geographically and politically separated from the Christian faith, at a time when the Christian church itself was, aggressively extreme, divided and being tossed to and throw with every wind of doctrine. Put in the context of its historical setting it did provide light, ethical values, and direction at a time when social customs of the day were often extreme, cruel and diverse, especially to the poor and needy and women.

Loved the intro and loved the book itself! Dispelled a lot of rumors I've been told about Islam.

Thank you very much for my Hard Cover Qur'an. I am very excited to give this as a Ramadan gift to my boyfriend. I have also purchased one for myself to read with my bible. Since I am not Muslim I think this book will be great for me to learn from since it has full English text. I have also purchased another Qur'an with English translation to go along with it. The hard cover is a little smaller than I expected and I thought the cover would look the same as the product shown for the soft cover. Non the less I am not so easily disappointed in those kinds of things. I purchased this because of the review since I didn't know the "correct" one to buy. As I am Christian and my boyfriend is Muslim I wasn't sure if there are different versions like the Bible has. I am thankful to learn from the reviews and bought this with confidence along with a Tajweed Qur'an. I think both in combination will be absolutely wonderful. Very excited! Thank you! Wow. Reading the Quran in it's entirety has truly changed my life. This version was very good for the price but I will still continue a search for a version that is more fluidly translated.

Well, the book is nice. Clean, crisp pages with a very interesting introduction. The introduction contained fascinating facts and information and the annotations at the bottom of the page are not intrusive at all, sometimes I don't even see the footnote in the text. So I will give it 4 stars for this.However, the Koran itself is mediocre. It is clearly a diluted down indirect account of the Bible, I mean just compare surah 12 ("Yusuf") with Genesis chapters 37-45 and you can clearly see that M. had less details. However, I will say that I like the vocabulary used to describe God, its more powerful than most Christian motifs: like, "the Lord of the Worlds", but you can get even more powerful vocabulary in the Mahabharata for practically each minor god. Being apocrypha, all the Koranic verses about virtue are inspiring, but ultimately as meaningful as Steven Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People".

I am Roman Catholic. This is a - beautiful - very easy-to-read translation of this important religious work!!

My favorite radiochemistry book. Just at the perfect level for an upper division class. Flexible enough to use for classes with varying focus.

This book was a coil-bound photocopy of a used book. It did not fit the description at all, which included 'and intact spine'.

Radiochemistry and Nuclear Methods of Analysis is a book based on lectures on that subject. It has been written in a way that is understandable and easy to follow by the Chemistry or Physics student but also by the reader who has never been exposed to this subject before. It is well organized providing the reader information of the discovery of radioactivity and the contributions in this field, the concepts, the applications and the instrumentation used. The text is clear and concise. The text also provide additional reference for the reader who wants to continue reading more about a particular topic given that this book is a survey of the applications of radiochemistry. The tables, illustrations, graphs are easy to follow and the equations are well explained. This book is recommended for those who are interested in this area of Chemistr that usually is briefly mentioned during a General Chemistry course.

This is a gorgeously illustrated ode to one of nature’s miracles. Do yourself a favor, get this book for every youngster you know. Share it with the families to foster a new dedication to saving endangered animals.

Again my ignorance is high lighted. I had no idea of the world in which sea turtles live. Thanks for turning on the light for me. I’ll introduce my Grandkids to this reality in-hopes they’ll live in a more enlightened world.

This is a very cute book! I absolutely love the artwork! I will definitely consider buying the hard copy version. My three year old loves books and this would be a great addition.

Another good book by Diana Kanan. Well versed and the illustrations are beautiful. Again my granddaughter loved the turtles and the colors on the pages. Would highly recommend this book for any young child. Liked that part of the proceeds go to protecting the endangered turtles of Florida. Well done.

Very cute story and of course every one loves a good ending. I wish that the story words were on the pictures on every page. I feel that it helps little ones to see pictures that correspond with the words they are hearing. Nevertheless, I look forward to reading about Poky's next adventure.

I remember the moment when my roommate showed me Keyhole's EarthViewer for the first time on a computer in a dingy condo in Mountain View. The magical product had that much of a profound impact on me. It was exhilarating to read this book by an insider who saw that technology go from a struggling startup ("But what do you do with it?") to being the foundation of one of the most transformational technology products in history (Google Maps and Google Earth). Not only did Kilday have a ringside view of this journey, he was in the ring for much of that time.As an entrepreneur betting several years of my life on location technologies involving the "blue dot" showing up on a map on a smartphone, this has been a fantastic read. Must read for anyone in the mapping and location industry.

Full of memories for those whose driving experience predates Google Maps; startup rags-to-riches drama for would-be entrepreneurs; and a history of what is arguably Google's most successful product line for everyone who uses it, Kilday's book proves to be an enjoyable read. Some of the names are familiar, but many will be new to the reader in this insider account of what it was like to be a startup, purchased by Google, on the ground floor of what was cutting edge technology that became so completely ubiquitous that it arguably changed the world.

Probably the best non-fiction book I have ever read. Its a great combination of the ups and downs of life in a startup, as well as an easily understood overview of the technology - how they got where they are today and where it might be going in the future. It's an easy, fun read and you actually get to learn something too - neat! It's just a really good book

The quality is generally good, except for that stapling defect. The first ten pages nearly fall off. I would have returned this one if I am not so eager to read it.

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I'm glad he did. It colorfully tells the Google Maps story from the early tough, cash strapped, pre-Google startup days until today. The post Google acquisition phase shows what desire with unlimited funding can accomplish. I highly recommend this book.

Very entralling tale of the founding of Google Earth and Google Maps. It’s not often I find a non-fiction book that is such a page turner. Plus the insight into the glory days of early Google is great.

But this time, Kady and Ezra take a backseat and let new characters Hanna and Nik drive for a while.Jump Station Heimdall is an insanely boring place for a teenager, at least according to the station commander’s daughter, Hanna. Spoiled, self-entitled, and a demon in the martial arts, Hanna spends her time sexting her boyfriend, buying overpriced jumpsuits and taunting her drug dealer, Nik. Raised by a long family line of criminals, Nik is easy-going, cocky and quite resourceful when it comes to breaking the law. And he definitely has a thing for Hanna.As in Illuminae, when the cow dung hits the fan, the teenagers are the only ones who can save the ship, or jump station, or universe. Your choice, its all there. At the Terra Day celebration, a highly trained elite force sent by BeiTech, the corporation that attacked the mining colony, invades the Heimdall. Led by a dead-eyed psychopath who finds bliss when everything goes his way, the assassin squad lies in wait for the ship bearing the last refugees from the mining colony. Hanna and Nik, polar opposites, join forces to defend the Heimdall, save their family and friends and prevent BeiTech from destroying the only living witnesses from the colony.My first impression of Hanna was: “I miss Kady.” Hanna is so bratty and self-centered that she is unlikeable and easily dismissed as a tease. Au contraire, mon ami, there is more to this little girl than meets the eye. Raised by a military father, this little girl has studied warfare, battlefield logistics and can quote Sun Tzu, Napoleon and the Bhagavad Gita. She’s sassy, kickass, and clever, and she grew on me.Nik, on the other hand, I loved from the beginning. With his life story inked on his body and his heart on his sleeve, Nik is absolutely charming in a bad boy sort of way.The book is powered by a wicked sense of humor and creative genius. Malware has infected the station’s computer system so that a single raunchy pop song is constantly playing: in the elevator, during a gunfight, while being attacked by mutant eels. Did I mention the mutant eels with their psychotropic body fluids? Evil little monsters. I caught a bunch of pop culture references: a computer actually uses a line from Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I’m pretty sure Nik is channeling the Joker from the movie Batman Beyond at one point. I saw the names of at least two young adult novelists on the Heimdall’s casualty list. And the texts between the teens, even in moments of crisis or sadness, are hysterical.There are more twists in this book than in your intestines. So many times my family heard me loudly proclaim how much I hated this book only to follow with “shhh, can’t talk, I’m at the good part.” It’s engrossing and compelling and entertaining and so so so so good. Now, in case you do miss Kady and Ezra and AIDAN, yes, AIDAN, do not worry, they join the story.What makes the only important difference between Illuminae and Gemina is the reader’s perspective. We know there will be painful twists that gouge our hearts, we know it will make us laugh out loud, make us cry, make us curse the authors and their unborn children (trust me, I did), we went through it all with Illuminae. As seasoned readers of the Illuminae Files, we know to look for the clues, the crumbs, left by the authors because we know they are there and it is so fun when you find them. And, in the end, on the very last page, when a character asks, “You wanna know how it ends?” my answer was a resounding “Yes. Yes, I do.”The last page always has the best line. Bliss.

Gemina is the second book in the Illuminae Files, and it was told in much the same vein as Illuminae. Where Illuminae took place on a series of spaceships, Gemina takes place at the Heimdall, a space station that sits on a seven-way rip in spacetime. The Heimdall is a wormhole generator and serves as the connection point between the ENTIRE CIVILIZED UNIVERSE and the outskirt systems, such as the Kerenza system.The characters:Hanna - allegedly spoiled, extremely skilled in strategic thinking (her father's idea of quality time = chess, war games, studying Sun Tzu, etc.), and v. physically fit. She does krav maga, people. This is not a drill. Also, every living male who is not a relation is in love with her.Nik - criminal with a heart of gold who did time for a crime THAT SOMEONE, MAYBE HE, committed. Super in love with Hanna from page one for some reason. Has tattoos. Doesn't bring a ton of skills to the table. Is mildly street smart. Has feelings?Ella - Nik's paralyzed cousin who is AN AMAZING HACKER OF YE OLDE COMPUTERS. Not as good as Kady from Illuminae, but then again, no one is.Bad guys - Don't get too attached.Lots of other people - Likewise.The universe - Also likewise.What I liked:You guys. Until a certain point in the book, I was like OMG THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. SO MUCH BETTER THAN ILLUMINAE. MUCH LOVE. SO INTO THIS. The beginning portion of the book was amazing.I like when people play with wormholes and multiverse theories - it definitely took an interesting twist in this story. I especially liked their use of simple diagrams to explain a weird sciency thing that would otherwise have been very confusing. OF NOTE: Gemina comes from geminus, which means twin. BUT THAT'S PROBABLY A COINCIDENCE, PROBABLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STORY, NOTHING TO SEE HERE, KEEP IT MOVING. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I BROUGHT IT UP.The format was a lot more user-friendly this time, with fewer swirly upside-downy pages. I was much less grumpy while reading this book than I was while reading Illuminae.I loved the cousin-to-cousin love between Nik and Ella. It made me like both of them a lot more than I would have, otherwise. Close family relationships are SO FUN TO READ ABOUT because there is this deep connection with inside jokes and pettiness and protectiveness, with none of the "will they/won't they" tension. LOVED their dynamic.During a strategic session with Nik and Ella, Hanna references the Battle of Thermopylae, which I thought was clever. FOR REASONS THAT I SHALT NOT DISCLOSE.I liked how ruthless Hanna was - she was just as ruthless as the bad guys. And smarter, too. In case I have never made it clear, I am PRO smart girls and the bad-assery thereof.What I didn't like:At the beginning of the book, Hanna is practically in love with her Dreamy Boyfriend with a Presumably British Accent. By the end of the book, after a very quick series of events, she is risking EVERYTHING to be with Nik. Granted, Nik is also the key to saving, you know, THE KNOWN UNIVERSE AND ALSO THIS OTHER UNIVERSE THAT IS BARELY EVEN AN ACQUAINTANCE, but still. The feelings progressed very rapidly, especially considering how at the beginning of the book, Hanna repeatedly told Nik (in response to his constant sexual harassment), "Never." Or, "Not if you were the last anything in anything." But whatever. Apparently that is... a thing that... happens.So, remember how I said "Until a certain point in the book..."? Well. There is a plot twist. That happens. And it... is THE SAME PLOT TWIST THAT HAPPENED IN ILLUMINAE. THE SAME. EXACT. PLOT TWIST. The same feeling of the authors hiding behind a tree, smothering giggles, waiting for me to run straight over the banana peel that is their plot twist. And here's why the plot twist was extra disappointing: remember how I said Hanna referenced the Battle of Thermopylae? That reference gave me CERTAIN EXPECTATIONS regarding the SURVIVAL RATE of our MAIN CHARACTERS. Those expectations were dashed. (And simultaneously fulfilled. Things got weird.) Look, the plot twist felt like a tease. It was frustrating and disappointing. Frustrappointing. But my frustrappointment transformed into SHEER, UNMITIGATED RAGE at the OVERT TEASE that followed the BANANA PEEL OF A PLOT TWIST. At that point, I didn't care. I did NOT CARE what happened for the rest of the book. I just wanted the book to be over. That's how angry I was. The stakes were very high in this book - and I would argue that they were too high. Listen: when the LITERAL FATE OF THE LITERAL UNIVERSE is at stake, and you know that this is BOOK TWO OF A TRILOGY, there is no suspense whatsoever. If the fate of the universe was at stake in the FINAL INSTALLMENT of a series, then that would be something. The universe COULD end! But this is book two; and, given the storytelling method (dossier-style, documents compiled after the fact), you know that someone (or at least the AI) survived. Which means you know that the universe does not end up getting destroyed. So the question wasn't (frantically, while biting nails), "Will they survive???" - it was (calmly, while sipping tea), "In what precise manner will they succeed, I wonder?"The villains were a little bit... cartoon villainy. In particular, the main female villain, Kali, really has it out for Hanna. Because... Hanna... killed one of the bad guys (whose nickname was literally Romeo)? With whom we sort of assume Kali had a relationship? But then Kali goes insane and foils HER OWN TEAM'S PLANS so that she can chase a teenager around a space station? Because... heartbreak? Or something? The problem is that Kali doesn't seem like the sort of person who is capable of developing a deep romantic attachment; she seems more like a female spider, the use-and-then-murder-and-eat type. So the whole murdery vengeance deal felt a bit out of nowhere.Like in Illuminae, the main characters seemed a little too cookie-cutter. Smart girl who can fight! Unwilling criminal with a heart of gold! Computer hacking girl with sass to spare! I just... wanted... DEPTH! And a sad back-story involving a puppy didn't really cut it for me.In summary:GEMINA HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL! Most of the book was FIVE STARS, HIGHLY RECOMMEND, WILL READ AGAIN. So when I got to that EXACT SAME PLOT TWIST THAT FRUSTRATED ME LAST TIME and realized that GEMINA AND ILLUMINAE HAVE EERILY SIMILAR PLOTS, I got so upset. So, so, so upset. It had some amazing elements - wormholes! Drugs! Crime families! Bad guys! Romance? But for me it fell short. Three stars out of five.Recommend to people who enjoyed Illuminae. Because... well. If you liked Illuminae, you will definitely like Gemina.

John Lewis Gaddis obtained from the great man much time and personal access, and was granted privileges to Kennan’s archives. Gaddis has produced a very profound, insightful work on George Kennan‘s Grand Strategy. Kennan promulgated this strategy through the Long Telegram, his famous writing as author „X“ in the journal, Foreign Affairs, and in position papers of the Policy Planning Staff under George Marshall and Dean Acheson. The reader walks with Kennan through the 1920‘s when, under the Rogers Act, the man in his young 20‘s enters the very first generation of a newly established class of professional, career officers of America‘s foreign service. The reader, with the young Kennan, learns to love Russian culture and history as the State Department sponsors his immersive graduate studies in Russian language and history combined with work-study programs in consulate offices. Kennan, like Dean Acheson, was present at the creation. Kennan underestimated his own power of influence, both at the end of World War II, the outset of the Cold War, and over the seventy years remaining in his life when a grateful nation kept seeking his counsel despite his seeking of scholarly refuge from the empyrean heights of the Advanced Institute at Princeton University. Kennan’s greatness emerged in strategic vision promulgated with force of language shaped by Shakespeare, John Donne and Edward Gibbon. A very inward, reflective, even spiritual man, Kennan always felt responsible towards children and posterity; he always took other persons very seriously in their humanity. These spiritual qualities combined with poetic powers that found new forms of strategic expression patterned for new world situations as they arose — his foresight as early as the 1940’s of Communism’s ultimate fall under its own weight due to the unwieldiness of the Soviet Union’s far-flung empire; his opposition to the Vietnam War as well as the bombing of Hanoi; as well as his proposal in the 1980‘s of strategic arms reduction (to replace arms limitation) with an ultimate goal to eliminate weapons of mass destruction overall. Gaddis does not shrink from candid review of Kennan’s considerable limitations and faults. Gaddis’ work is well-balanced. My first contact with George Kennan came 50 years ago as a college junior in international relations, having been assigned Kennan‘s concise „Lenin and the West.“ Kennan‘s vision struck that college junior forever, and Gaddis‘ biography is one of the few expressions that measures up to the great man‘s legacy. This work should be read in conjunction with the very profound work of Robert Beisner, „Dean Acheson and the Cold War“.

It would be next to impossible to read about the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union without George Kennan's name appearing. The man's containment argument carried the day in Washington D.C., helped our nation avoid war with the U.S.S.R., and, therefore, prevented needless deaths on both sides. For about three decades, I've always wondered why this guy? Sure, Mr. Kennan was acknowledged as a very smart person when it came to Russian history, but it's difficult to believe he was the only big brain kicking around D.C. that had a firm grasp of the Russian mindset as well as Bolshevism.Mr. Gaddis does an excellent job in, not only explaining Mr. Kennan's importance and how he became indispensable, but also the full measure of the man. Warts and all. The author rightly had concerns about taking on a biography about such a thin-skinned man while the dude was still alive. Mr. Gaddis explains the conditions which were put in place for him to attempt the biography. His intimate access to Mr. Kennan's boatloads of written arguments; the man's family, friends and foes; and most importantly exclusive use of Mr. Kennan's life-long personal diary culminates into not a gushy lovefest but a very balanced, absorbing biography. Mr. Gaddis's book certainly deserved the Pulitzer Prize. Like everyone else, Kennan had qualities that were admirable and other aspects of his personality that were either annoying or made him a good candidate for being hit on the side of the head with an iron skillet.The story is about a brilliant wonk whose ability to right cogent, poetic assessments that influenced policy makers is what separated him from the other bright bureaucrats. Man oh man, the guy rubbed elbows with the big guys; Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Bush 41, and Clinton as well as General MacArthur, Secretary of States George Marshall, Dean Acheson, and George Shultz. Then there's Robert Oppenheimer, Mikhail Gorbachev... look, my fingers are getting tired in listing all the power brokers. You get the picture. Also, his love of Russian history and culture and ability to speak perfect Russian made him a cut above the rest. At his core, Mr. Kennan had an oddly wonkish heart and the unstable emotions of your stereotypical artist. The man was completely, laughably clueless about contemporary American culture.In the week I was reading "George F. Kennan," not one person who asked me had any idea who he was. That's a shame. Mr. Kennan strongly believed that style was as important as substance. He joined the two and made himself into a valuable asset. Mr. Gaddis seems to have taken the same attitude while writing his Kennan biography and the result is an outstanding work which deserves a wide readership.

Gaddis is well know to have an Encyclopedic knowledge of the Cold War. He also had Kennan's blessings in writing this biography. Gaddis does an adequate job of reviewing Kennan's life - but then tends to be more of a perfunctory emotional quality to this work than should have been present with someone as dynamic as George Kennan. This is the official biography by the official biographer - but many of the qualities of Kennan's spirit seem to me missing. I strongly suggest that folk actually read Kennan to pick up these missing pieces.Gaddis though has written some fine work on the Cold War, although I strongly disagree with his take on the Truman Doctrine.

A terrific piece of scholarship and fine writing, exploring the life of the man who as much as anyone else, including President Truman, set the tone for American containment policy toward the Soviet Union. This is an important book, and a great choice of subject on the part of Professor Gaddis, preeminent Cold War scholar.
