Black and Blur (consent not to be a single being), by Fred Moten

Review

"Simply put, Moten is offering up some of the most affecting, most useful, theoretical thinking that exists on the planet today.... Moten’s work makes the activities of reading and thinking feel palpably fresh, weird, and vital." (Maggie Nelson 4Columns 2017-12-01)"Some readers will come here because of The Feel Trio, because of The Undercommons. Some because Moten is the activists’ theorist, the contemporary art institution’s darling, because of performance studies, jazz studies, literature. Some readers will come here to encounter a brain that is at once more erudite, generous, capacious, fierce, jokey and infuriating than most others on the planet right now. Everybody ought to arrive here to be schooled and troubled, elated and confused, invited and indicted by a sparklingly original vision for black study." (Nabil Kashyap Full Stop 2018-02-27)"Through his writing and the ways he discusses it in warm, beckoning language that complements his conceptually intensive texts, Moten has become a siren of sorts for artists and curators who find in his words ideas to put into their own practice." (Andy Battaglia ARTNews 2018-03-27)"It's this spirit of the collective effort of study and exchange and resonance, the effort to keep the channels open and keep listening, that has made Moten (or, maybe, 'Moten/s') such a celebrated thinker. At the end of sentences like these, you want to say something like Amen." (Jess Row Bookforum 2018-04-01)"Be ready to be wowed; be ready to be challenged; most of all, be ready for the long haul. It is, apparently, the first in a planned trilogy. Moten is tracking his own course, and it’s fast-moving and spectacular." (Patrick James Dunagan Rain Taxi 2018-05-17)"At a time when both theory and criticism are frequently and convincingly attacked as exhausted forms, Moten’s trilogy has reinvented both. . . . In its mixture of theoretical complexity and disarming directness, Moten’s beautifully written trilogy offers the sheer pleasure of art."  (Lidija Haas Vulture 2018-09-17)"2018 must go down for me as the year of Fred Moten’s trilogy: Black and Blur, Stolen Life, and The Universal Machine. You could say they’re essays about art, philosophy, blackness, and the refusal of social death, but I think of them more as a fractal universe forever inviting immersion and exploration, a living force now inhabiting my bookshelf." (Maggie Nelson Bookforum 2018-11-01)"My favorite book(s) of 2018 are the three volumes of Fred Moten’s consent not to be a single being, individually titled Black and Blur, Stolen Life, and The Universal Machine. In this collection of essays stretching back fifteen years, Moten challenges the reader to imagine a radically interconnected aesthetic and political sphere that stretches from Glenn Gould to Fanon to Kant to Theaster Gates, sometimes in the space of a single sentence. This trilogy is one of the great intellectual adventures of our era." (Jess Row Bookforum 2018-11-01)

Review

"In this profound work, Fred Moten makes a sustained and thrilling attempt to think philosophy and music together, which is also to think philosophy as music, which is also necessarily to think music as philosophy. In its capaciousness and in its persistent, challenging, dazzling intelligence, Black and Blur is a book that is worthy of the reputation and influence of its author. Its publication is a major event." (Brent Hayes Edwards, author of Epistrophies: Jazz and the Literary Imagination)"Poetry and philosophy can't convincingly be condensed or speeded up. To feel each fully they must be read and sounded in time. Such is the case with Fred Moten's words. Black and Blur allows and opens this feeling-mind-sense-body splitting possibility, in its stunning and generative appositionality of aesthetics and life. An intertwined, journeying flight, examining and composing variegations distinctly, yet together placed to read and imbibe. Beautiful, sobering, intricately pleasurable, delicious, and necessary as a way to now begin again delving into the specific immense variegated borderless blur of black that is profound, wide, and bittersweet." (Renée Green, artist, filmmaker, and author of Other Planes of There)

Have only read parts of this book. Its one you have to slow down to read, by design. It rewards that attention. The parts of Marx, James and Adorno really spoke to me.

The Bangladesh Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The World Readers)

Review

"Bangladesh is a new nation but an old land. It comprises the world's largest delta and one of the most densely populated areas. It has been home to diverse linguistic, religious, and cultural traditions. Yet its past strength and present achievements are often overshadowed by accounts of natural and man-made disasters. In this book, scholars from across the globe put together written and visual materials to provide facts about and perspectives on a vibrant Bangladesh." (Anisuzzaman, Professor Emeritus, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh)"There is nothing else like The Bangladesh Reader. The range of materials included is stunning, and the volume conveys the feeling of Bangladesh speaking for itself, in many voices. The Reader will definitely be a useful introduction for people who know little or nothing about the country. It also has much to offer people who know a great deal about it. I have studied Bangladesh for years, and I learned a lot reading through this volume." (David Ludden, author of Early Capitalism and Local History in South India)“This revelatory volume brings alive Bangladesh’s tormented history and vibrant culture through a selection of excerpts and illustrations from works of history, journalism, literature, and visual art.” (Andrew J. Nathan Foreign Affairs)“Here are the key reasons I found the volume very useful: (a) before this, the history of Bangladesh was a mere appendage to what happened in India and later Pakistan. Its politics was looked at as a mere response to the stimuli provided by India and Pakistan. This book is the first attempt on a grand scale to make the history and politics of Bangladesh stand on its own feet, (b) it is as wide as it is deep. It is wide in the sense that it covers the entire history of this nation from the ancient times until today.” (Subhajyoti Ray Economic and Political Weekly)“This is a unique, impressive and imaginative approach to compiling a volume of this nature. . . . Does The Bangladesh Reader fulfill and even exceed our expectations at times? Insofar as it is possible to compile a general text on the eighth most populous nation on earth, the answer is an emphatic yes.' (Ali Raza Dawn)“The essays, stories, reports, documents, photographs and cartoons in this volume offer an escape from the stereotypes and a real encounter with the country and its people. The way the editors have ensured this is remarkably refreshing. The result is more rewarding than dry academic research or journalistic simplifications.” (Ashishis Chakrabarti The Telegram (Calcutta))“The latest addition to Duke University Press’ World Readers series is a gem. It offers both general readers and specialists an unprecedented and much-needed array of information, voices, images and perspectives on Bangladesh’s history, politics and culture. . . . Overall, this is a hugely impressive feat of scholarship for which the two editors should be congratulated.” (David Lewis Pacific Affairs)"The Reader is exceptional because of the eyes of the editors for details of everyday life and the pot-pourri nature of the entries. ...The two distinguished scholars compile the rich narratives with an eye for the ordinary. It is this subaltern view that gives the Reader its distinctive character. While other compilers look for the contributions of the most scholarly and the well-known writers, the Reader provides voices to the voiceless, it gives them a rightful place, and they remain not in the margin, but in the mainstream. The weaving of the illustrations, reports, stories and scholarly pieces produce a compendium that should be a mandatory reading for anyone interested in understanding where and how Bangladesh came from. The innovative style of this compendium is of great value and the Reader sets a standard for inclusivity." (Habibul Haque Khondker Asian Journal of Social Science 2015-09-01)

I wanted more of a brief history and cultural guide for the person who will be there for Avery short time with a full agenda.

I thought this book was going to have more anecdotes about people's stories about growing up/ living in Bangladesh and be more about the culture of the country. Not so much. Its a lot of history, which wasn't what I was looking for. I won't finish reading it.

This is a book to own and read every now and then depending on which time period one wants to focus on at the moment. Hundreds of incredible pieces make this collage a piece of art!

Great book about my hometown.

excellent

Great book.

Yet another sign was being fastened to the top of the doorway of the National Memorial African Bookstore. Louie looked up to his dad in more ways than one, not just as a man who stuck signs all over the front of their store. A lot of people hung out at 2107 Seventh Avenue, including "kids and grown-ups, black folks and white folks, writers and politicians." Oh, and lots of famous people too.Louie's eyes were filled with awe and admiration as Mr. Ali nudged him on the chin. His dad, Lewis Michaux, Sr., was a man of many words. "Don't get took!" he shouted, "Read a book!" Lewis didn't have but five books when he started out, nor much money, but he "saved his pennies" and went from a pushcart to a bookstore. That banker didn't believe in Lewis, claiming that "Black people don't read," but they certainly did ... and they bought lots of books!Louie worked on arranging a display as customers, black ones, browsed the "zillion books in the store." Dad always had something to say about books and knowledge and questions and words. He was known as the "Professor," even though he hadn't gone to college. People kept coming to Lewis Michaux's "House of Common Sense and Proper Propaganda," but the sense seemed to be leaving the world. Mr. Malcolm X had something to say to, but all of a sudden disaster struck. Would Lewis be coming home? Would anyone hear the truth again? This is a marvelously poignant book about Lewis Michaux, a black man who made a difference. Young children, who may know little about Lewis, a man who subtly influenced the course of history will love this fictionalized tale. It's told from the vantage point of his son, Louie, a young man who learns the value of education and truth through books. The artwork is stunning, meshing perfectly with the tale. In the back of the book is a full page biographical sketch of Michaux, a couple of photographs, and a selected bibliography. The end pages are filled with Michaux's sayings and rhymes. A fictionalized portrait of Lewis Michaux that shouldn't be missed!A Junior Literary Guild Selection.Grades 2 to 4This book courtesy of the publisher.

The Book Itch is the story of The National Memorial African Bookstore, founded in Harlem by Louis Michaux. It is told from the perspective of Lewis's son's. The story takes place in the 50s and 60s when there was a lot of racial tension and hatred. The bookstore not only was a place to feed your hunger for books and knowledge, but was a meeting place for famous African Americans such as Muhammed Ali and Malcolm X. It is wonderful to see how the love of reading and books enabled this man to move beyond the expectations of the bankers who would not loan him money to establish his dream store. There are historical events in the story, particularly the murder of Malcolm X and how the author saw this event used to further empower African Americans. I have to say that I was not impressed with the illustrations. I understand the style the illustrator was going for but the illustrations appeared to be a bit too blurry and as another reviewer said, "smudged". I can definitely see using this book when teaching about these historical events as well as librarians and English teachers using this to reinforce the love and necessity for reading. 4.5 stars

I love the colorful illustrations as well as the story in this excellent historic picture book about the National Memorial African Bookstore. The story is told from Lewis's point of view about his father's bookstore. He tells about the famous people who visited the store and gathered there including Muhammad Ali and Malcom X. Historical and biographical information is included in this informative book for children. Here is one of my favorite quotes from the book: "Me and my dad talk about important things. Things like truth and what it means to be free. Dad says books can help you. Not every book is true, he says, but the more you read, the easier it is to figure out for yourself what is true." Just fabulous! I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it!

Amazing story of Lewis Michaux and his Harlem bookstore. The bank wouldn't loan him $$ because they said blacks wouldn't buy books and read, but Michaux saved his money. Soon his bookstore became a mecca for black leaders, as well as neighborhood readers. This story is told from the son's perspective. There is a scene indicating Malcolm X gets shot. So, this book is best for probably children 8 years old and older.Love the illustrations which suit the story. They are works of art.

For one I absolutely love books...all types. This story gives the background of Micheaux's bookstore through the lens of his young son. The illustrations add to the depth of the story while providing a pictorial history of the greatest bookstore in Harlem. I will recommend this book to everyone I know. 5++stars

I am interested in any history of Eckankar and this author, David Lane--although much maligned by Eckankar--did some incredible research into this religious org. That said, I was disappointed in this because it is only a few PAGES of a back and forth in letters between Darwin and Lane. He only has a few lines from Darwin Gross and then paragraphs of his eloquent argumentative responses.I would VERY MUCH have liked to see the entire letter from Darwin--not just a line or two and his wordy arguments against it.**Still interesting but Mr. Lane, if you HAVE the entire letter, post that too along with your replies in their entire format--and then take it apart with your scholarly arguments....not just selected snippets!

Eckankar folks will want to read this one, even though they will probably not believe any of it is truthful.

Mr. Lane is quite an eloquent writer. That's the only reason for 2 stars versus one. He has spent many years lambasting and learning to lambast the religious beliefs of others. I have read his online arguments and heard some of his audio. He is very convincing that everyone else s ideas is/are a 'demon cult' of some sort. Hence my title, 'the mind does not understand God'. God, Spirit, Infinite Being, (whatever) will not be put in a box.The most sacred thing in the universe is YOUR personal relationship with God. It is Perfect. Once 'man' gets involved she/she brings in the mind. They will bring their own personal biases and beliefs into the equation ready to tell you how anything you do buyt what THEY tell you will earn 'eternal damnation'.This will devastate your spiritual growth. Pray, read the spiirtual boks you are led to. YOU will know what is right and moral if you place your trust in GOD.Search!

Paul Twitchell, the founder of Eckankar, plagiarized from many authors. Most of his works were plagiarized from Dr. Julian Johnson who wrote in the thirties. I purchased Dr Johnson's books and saw for myself that most of Paul Twitchell's writings were not original, but were plagiarized from an American Dr. who had been to india writing in the 1930's! Plagiarism is lying and the founder of a religion would not deliberately lie if he had direct revelations of the divine. I had brought this to the attention of some of local leadership of Eckankar in my state. They denied it and said "truth is truth wherever you find it." But when I realized he plagiarized from Kirpal Singh's works and Julian Johnson's works and others "WORD FOR WORD" this was not just truth but he was passing off other's works as his own which is dishonest. Seek the truth and you will find it.David Lane wrote a complete expose of all the falsehoods of Eckankar. Too bad only a few pages are available online...

How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed

From Booklist

As inventor, futurist, and noted author of several books on technology, Kurzweil has often pushed the boundaries of convention and stirred controversy with his visionary ideas. Guaranteed to trigger still more debate, his latest work expands on a theme first introduced in his best-seller, The Age of Intelligent Machines (1989); namely, a proposed project to reverse-engineer the human mind and use that information to build superintelligent computers to solve the world’s thorniest problems. Arguing against the prevailing notion that the brain is simply too complex to be replicated in machine form, either in hardware or software, Kurzweil points out how recent, groundbreaking scientific advances, from mapping the human genome to 3D molecular imaging, have resulted in exponential technological growth. On his way to demonstrating the inevitability of computer intelligence that outstrips its human creators, Kurzweil dissects such topics as the nature of consciousness and transcendent abilities like love and creativity, and seeks to rebut his potential critics. While his prose sometimes founders when analyzing abstract data, Kurzweil’s extrapolation of technology’s breathtaking potential remains provocative and inspiring. --Carl Hays

Kurzweil's vision of our super-enhanced future is completely sane and calmly reasoned, and his book should nicely smooth the path for the earth's robot overlords, who, it turns out, will be us.~The New York Times "Kurzweil writes boldly and with a showman’s flair, expertly guiding the lay reader into deep thickets of neuroscience."~Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe This book is a breath of fresh air.... Kurzweil makes an argument for optimism.~Laura Spinney, New Scientist "A fascinating exercise in futurology."~Kirkus Reviews "It is rare to find a book that offers unique and inspiring content on every page. How to Create a Mind achieves that and more. Ray has a way of tackling seemingly overwhelming challenges with an army of reason, in the end convincing the reader that it is within our reach to create nonbiological intelligence that will soar past our own. This is a visionary work that is also accessible and entertaining.~Rafael Reif, president, MIT "Kurzweil's new book on the mind is magnificent, timely, and solidly argued! His best so far!"~Marvin Minsky, MIT Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences; cofounder of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab; widely regarded as "the father of artificial intelligence" "If you ever wondered about how your mind works, read this book. Kurzweil's insights reveal key secrets underlying human thought and our ability to recreate it. This is an eloquent and thought-provoking work."~Dean Kamen, physicist; inventor of the first wearable insulin pump, the HomeChoice dialysis machine, and the IBOT mobility system; founder of FIRST; recipient of the National Medal of Technology "One of the eminent AI pioneers, Ray Kurzweil, has created a new book to explain the true nature of intelligence, both biological and nonbiological. The book describes the human brain as a machine that can understand hierarchical concepts ranging from the form of a chair to the nature of humor. His important insights emphasize the key role of learning both in the brain and in AI. He provides a credible road map for achieving the goal of super-human intelligence, which will be necessary to solve the grand challenges of humanity.~Raj Reddy, founding director, Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University; recipient of the Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery "Ray Kurzweil pioneered artificial intelligence systems that could read print in any type style, synthesize speech and music, and understand speech. These were the forerunners of the present revolution in machine learning that is creating intelligent computers that can beat humans in chess, win on Jeopardy!, and drive cars. His new book is a clear and compelling overview of the progress, especially in learning, that is enabling this revolution in the technologies of intelligence. It also offers important insights into a future in which we will begin solving what I believe is the greatest problem in science and technology today: the problem of how the brain works and of how it generates intelligence."~Tomaso Poggio, Eugene McDermott Professor, MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences; director, MIT Center for Biological and Computational Learning; former chair, MIT McGovern Institute for Brain Research; one of the most cited neuroscientists in the world"This book is a Rosetta stone for the mystery of human thought. How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed by Ray Kurzweil"How to Create a Mind" is a very interesting book that presents the pattern recognition theory of mind (PRTM), which describes the basic algorithm of the neocortex (the region of the brain responsible for perception, memory, and critical thinking). It is the author's contention that the brain can be reverse engineered due to the power of its simplicity and such knowledge would allow us to create true artificial intelligence. The one and only, futurist, prize-winning scientist and author Ray Kurzweil takes the reader on a journey of the brain and the future of artificial intelligence. This enlightening 352-page book is composed of the following eleven chapters: 1. Thought Experiments on the World, 2. Thought Experiments on Thinking, 3. A Model of the Neocortex: The Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind, 4. The Biological Neocortex, 5. The Old Brain, 6. Transcendent Abilities, 7. The Biologically Inspired Digital Neocortex, 8. The Mind as Computer, 9. Thought Experiments on the Mind, 10. The Law of Accelerating Returns Applied to the Brain, and 11. Objections.Positives:1. Well researched and well-written book. The author's uncanny ability to make very difficult subjects accessible to the masses.2. A great topic in the "mind" of a great thinker.3. Great use of charts and diagrams.4. A wonderful job of describing how thinking works.5. Thought-provoking questions and answers based on a combination of sound science and educated speculation.6. The art of recreating brain processes in machines. "There is more parallel between brains and computers than may be apparent." Great stuff!7. Great information on how memories truly work.8. Hierarchies of units of functionality in natural systems.9. How the neocortex must work. The Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind (PRTM). The main thesis of this book. The importance of redundancy. Plenty of details.10. Evolution...it does a brain good. Legos will never be the same for me again.11. The neocortex as a great metaphor machine. Projects underway to simulate the human brain such as Markram's Blue Brain Project.12. Speech recognition and Markov models. Author provides a lot of excellent examples.13. The four key concepts of the universality and feasibility of computation and its applicability to our thinking.14. A fascinating look at split-brain patients. The "society of mind." The concept of free will, "We are apparently very eager to explain and rationalize our actions, even when we didn't actually make the decisions that led to them." Profound with many implications indeed.15. The issue of identity.16. The brain's ability to predict the future. The author's own predictive track record referenced.17. The laws of accelerating returns (LOAR), where it applies and why we should train ourselves to think exponentially.18. The author provides and analyzes objections to his thesis. In defense of his ideas. Going after Allen's "scientist's pessimism."19. The evolution of our knowledge.20. Great notes and links beautifully.Negatives:1. The book is uneven. That is, some chapters cover certain topics with depth while others suffer from lack of depth. Some of it is understandable as it relates to the limitations of what we currently know but I feel that the book could have been reformatted into smaller chapters or subchapters. The book bogs down a little in the middle sections of the book.2. Technically I disagree with the notion that evolution always leads to more complexity. Yes on survival but not necessarily on complexity.3. The author has a tendency to cross-market his products a tad much. It may come across as look at me...4. A bit repetitive.5. Sometimes leaves you with more questions than answers but that may not be a bad thing...6. No formal separate bibliography. In summary, overall I enjoyed this book. Regardless of your overall stance on the feasibility of artificial intelligence no one brings it like Ray Kurzweil. His enthusiasm and dedication is admirable. The author provides his basic thesis of how the brain works and a path to achieve true artificial intelligence and all that it implies. Fascinating in parts, bogs down in other sections but ultimately satisfying. I highly recommend it!Further suggestions: "Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior" by Leonard Mlodinow, "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies---How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths" by Michael Shermer, "The Scientific American Brave New Brain: How Neuroscience, Brain-Machine Interfaces, Neuroimaging, Psychopharmacology, Epigenetics, the Internet, and ... and Enhancing the Future of Mental Power" by Judith Horstman, "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature" by Steven Pinker, "Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain" and "Human: The Science Behind What Makes Us Unique", by Michael S. Gazzaniga, "Hardwired Behavior: What Neuroscience Reveals about Morality 1st Edition by Tancredi, Laurence published by Cambridge University Press Paperback" by Laurence Tancredi, "Braintrust: What Neuroscience Tells Us about Morality" by Patricia S. Churchland, "The Myth of Free Will" by Cris Evatt, "SuperSense" by Bruce M. Hood and "The Brain and the Meaning of Life" by Paul Thagard.

The first half of Kurzweil's book summarizes what is known about information processing by the human brain. He details how the neocortex recognizes patterns and stores information hierarchically, producing memory, consciousness and identity. He relates this to modern digital computers in terms of process and speed. After a brief look at hidden Markov chains, he arrives at his favorite topic, LOAR, the law of accelerating returns which leads him to sharing his thoughts about singularities. The victory by WATSON on the TV quiz show, 'Jeopardy', appears frequently in this story.Kurzweil's successful experience with natural language processing software gives him considerable credibility and authority in this attempt to predict computer breakthroughs during the coming decades. Ray Kurzweil is one of the foremost AI geniuses of our times and you probably should read one of his books.

A fascinating idea mired in a circuitous narrative. Kinda like having to sort through a hundred boxes of cereal for a single prize that you have to put together yourself. Perfectly fine for people with time on their hands and a fireplace to sit next to on a wintry evening. But I found myself highly impatient as I leafed through page after page looking for his point. I will always buy Ray's books. Make no mistake. He just needs an editor who knows how to sift the chaff. And Ray, if you are reading this, do let the editor do his/her job. Don't get precious about concepts. We're all pretty smart around here. Just make a point and move on.

Very disappointed. The book is about how the mind works, and not AT ALL about "how to create a mind". So if you're into the study of the brain, by all means read this book. But I was expecting something very different given the author's work in AI and given the title of the book, which is misleading.

In this boom Ray puts together how his knowledge of how the brain works helped in developing his technology a lot of us use daily. He deep dives into research done, as well as the why's of how things work. It is interesting to see the predictions he has made and his reason as to why they came true. He is a very smart man and the book for me was a good read. Although at some points I didn't fully understand what was being explained the majority of the book was so interesting it was hard for me to put down.

Wonderful read, very clear. Kurzweil has achieved confidence and articulation since earlier books, which were fantastic but a bit scattered and self-exploring. This was solid thought-provocation right in the kisser, especially his "everything is hierarchical patterns" grand unification theory. This stuff will change ya!Some find his work overly optimistic / simplistic, thinking that reduces his credibility. Nay, the guy has very real acumen - OCR, Dragon Speak, now Google. His is applied science, implementing his hypotheses directly - the proof is in the pudding. Other criticisms are that this book doesn't illuminate AI implementation ("the title makes grand claims"). Well for that you'll need a text book friends, paperback won't cut it. This book is "Start here. History, core theories, inspiration, grand unification". If you're inspired, make "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" your next read.

This was a really mind-blowing book. I'm always so impressed by Ray's ability to talk about such obscure things with such clarity and insight. His ability to time things is somewhat miraculous considering the array of potential outcomes and probabilities. This book was one of his best.
