a fun look at some of crazest ideas you'll ever see

Daniel Kline and Jason Tomaszewski have put together a thoroughly delightful book regaling the reader with classic tales of ideas gone wrong. The quick and easy to read stories make you feel like you are sitting down to dinner and having an uproariously good time with one of your oldest and funniest friends. While the book is a very fast read, savor the individual stories and pull them out for times when you need a quick pick me up. While I did not necessarily agree with all of the things they dubbed "The Worst Ideas Ever," I did always have a smile on my face while reading this book. So better yet, save the book for times when you are on public transportation, your wide smile and hearty laugh will assure you open berth, as you will assuredly be marked as that "crazy happy person on the train."

I really enjoyed this book. It was informational and funny. The only complaint I have is the more than occasional spelling and grammar error.

There is so much in this book that I had thought about at the time but never expressed. The authors capture what we are all thinking.

From New Coke to the Yugo, "Battlefield Earth" to Prohibition, modern history is full of laughably bizarre ideas that have made for some epic fails. In fact, somewhere in this world there is actually a little boy named "Facebook". Perhaps he can befriend some of those crazily-named celebrity babies (Moses Martin, anyone?). In this collection of anecdotal insanity, Daniel Kline covers laughable attempts in sports, politics, media, and so much more. Hey Paul Blart, remember the Segway? Have you ever deep-fried a turkey and blown up your house? How sexy is sticky, gooey pubic hair-infused edible underwear? Kline reminds us of failures past with wit, but the editing in this collection is worth a 'worst' nomination of its own.

Quick and easy read. First book I have finished cover to cover in a long time. Very entertaining and a lot of, "oh yeah, forgot about that" moments.

I love this book, and books like this..this is the best one yet. Some books like these do not have any pictures, so in case you dont remember what they were talking about, this one has full color pics of almost EVERYTHING!! The story to some of these were great (like the Taco Bell dog, which I didnt know was a faliure until I read this). The author seems to know what he is talking about and has some great items in here. This is something I can read, leave out and pick up and read again. I cant recomend this book enough...!!! Oh, and BTW, did I mention IT HAS PICTURES?? FULL COLOR PICTURES???!!!!!!!

I wish I didn't waste my time and money on this piece of crap. You use a few pages (or less) to describe each subject (which has many facets), and without any research into the background, you call it worst ideas ever. Either you are intellectually handicapped or you expect your readers to be so. It's a shame that I couldn't give it less than one star.

This easy-to-read book is lively and realistic, with a thread of humor running through it from start to finish. When I was about ten, my mother told me the story of the Paracutin volcano in Mexico, and the idea of it stuck in my mind ever after. Now here is a book that recounts her story as literature. It should capture the attention of all children who read it.

My grandson can't get enough of this story about a volcano that really exploded in Mexico.

As we were studying volcanoes in our homeschool we had already read about the "Hill of Fire" so I was delighted to find a children's book dedicated to this story and easy enough for our kids to read on their own as well as with us.Highly recommended for all family libraries.

Great book for a struggling reader!

This is my daughter's favorite "I Can Read Book." There's so much drama-- and it's based on a true story!

A favorite..Teaches about our earth at a proper level of reading.

Good book. Used it for our Homeachool unit study. Easy to read and understand

We were exicted to read this book. The description of the land and how the volcano was describe in good detail.

WATCH FOR VOUCHER INCLUDED! This book said it was included though upon delivery I found it to not be included. In order to take the Servepro exam online, you MUST have the voucher. I returned the book easily & received a refund. I bought the book new at my college with the voucher & the book was very informative. Think of the book as the DMV handbook. There is only so much it can teach you. The rest you will learn with experience. This book was easy to read & contains somewhat bold print. The chapters are pretty short & contain answers to the end of chapter questions. I answered all the end of chapter questions & did the review my professor provided us with. I passed the Servepro management test with flying colors. Most of the questions I was asked from Servepro were things I learned via the book. Good book just be sure the book you order contains the voucher or purchase it from Servepro directly. Just be VERY SURE when ordering to verify the voucher you ordered is for the online test & is NOT the one you fill in the bubbles.

I purchased the book because at the last minute I needed the test sheet. When, in five years, I need to take the test again I will not purchase the book but use the online resources I found when I looked up "ServSafe." I paid for one of the online classes and three of the questions on the assessment were referenced from the online class I took. There are also very helpful apps. My only e commendation is to order the test sheet early so that you don't have to pay for the book to get it. Maybe soon the book will be on line or the school will sell the test sheets without the book!

ServSafe is an excellent book for educational purposes. It is well structured, very organized and to the point. The key terms, discussion topics and questions in the back of the chapter are helpful in preparing for the ServSafe exam. The extraneous info is minimized, except for Chapter 2. Chapter 2 covers pathogens (bacterias, toxins, fungi and parasites) in a fair amount of detail. The ServSafe exam did not ask many questions specifically on pathogens.

Used for 1st year CHEF class. This book is organized with pictures, lists, highlight boxes, preview and review sections, key points, a glossary and an index. Some sections seem a bit disorganized even though the author(s) claim it has been deliberately set up for student success. Mheh.

I decided to buy this book because it claimed it was new and the price was fair. IT WAS NOT A NEW ONE! It was obvious a used one, in a neat condition thou. This book should includes a code to take a test online. The code was missing so that means that i have to buy it separate. I have to pay $50.00 for just that code. Very disappointed! It is like paying for a brand new book from borders without the two weeks i had to wait to be delivered. I learn my lesson, I am not buying more books here.if you are planning to buy a new book, make sure it is NEW and includes everything you need. Nowadays books are coming with access to websites with more useful information and/or testing. I would say, save the hassle and buy one from a place you are sure are new. Unless you are just expecting the hard copy of the book.

This book is very easy to read. The chapters and information is clear and to the point. I recently took the servsafe exam and only missed 3 questions. I purchased my book new and it included the servsafe exam sheet. The school book store was selling the book for 90$ and most of my classmates bought it because they feared the exam sheet wouldn't be included but if you buy it new, the exam sheet is included and if you are a student you can sign up for prime at a discounted rate or free (with a free trial) and get it in two days.

Did not get the voucher that I paid for and the customer service wasn't much help, they offered me a 5 dollar gift card, like that really helps.

It's a rental which i'm happy about I don't need to keep the book anyways. It's clean, pages aren't sticky. Its in like new condition. I do the review questions by writing them out so I won't be needing to write in this at all and can't wait to send it back

Anthropocene Fictions: The Novel in a Time of Climate Change (Under the Sign of Nature), by Adam Trexler

Review

As an extremely timely contribution to the urgent discussions of climate change and culture in the Anthropocene, Anthropocene Fictions deserves high praise for carefully documenting the longer history of climate change novels as well as projecting forward into the uncertain futures of postapocalyptic writings. Trexler’s provocative theory of 'eco-nomics,' or the inextricably intertwined aspects of ecological and economic choices made in our industrial cultures as we navigate rising waters and rising costs in the twenty-first century, is one with wide relevance for anyone interested in the cultural impact of global environmental change. (Heather I. Sullivan, Trinity University, author of The Cambridge Introduction to Literature and the Environment)With admirable thoroughness Adam Trexler has traced over 150 novels that are about climate change in one sense or another. He highlights the profound cultural shifts that are accompanying this phenomenon and underlines the novelty of the artistic challenges it represents for novelists. This result is an original and thoughtful book that must become an important reference point for future work in environmental criticism and in studies of the novel. (Timothy Clark, Durham University)Readers interested in ecoliterature will find this book a must read. (Choice)[A]n interesting and provocative look into the relationship between literary climate fiction and the changing global climate it describes.... Overall, Anthropocene Fictions provides important, critical insight into the relationship between fiction and science, with sufficient attention to its implications for how we think about climate change. (Journal of Cultural Geography)

Adam Trexler has single-handedly taken a monograph he published onlinefour years agoand turned it into perhaps the most important nonfiction book of 2015.No doubt , literary critics from the New York to Sydney will be arguing over this tome for months, years. This book is that important, that germane, that current. It looks at the issues and it pulls no punches. It's a scholarly look at sci-fi and cli fi books and how they deal with climate change issues, and it's the first time ever such a scholary book has hit the shelves running. The book's introduction section also tips its hat -- in one short, brief sentence -- to the cli-fi ''coinage'' and acknowledges its role in turning the American media on to climate-themed novels and movies in ways that sparked a small literary eruption that is still going strong. I found Trexler's entire discussion fascinating.

I read this book as part of my ongoing research into the assassination of President Kennedy. In my opinion the conflict in Vietnam is one of the keys to unraveling this greatest of mysteries if it can even still be called a mystery today. The conspiracy theory is President Kennedy was going to end America's involvement in Vietnam once he was re-elected in 1964. And that was something the Military Industrial Complex was never going to allow to happen. The great Fletcher Prouty worked with Allen Dulles at the CIA up until the time JFK got killed. Fletcher felt there never was any real military objective in Vietnam. The goal was to create a bottomless money pit of military spending. So the CIA was doing things in Vietnam to prolong the conflict for as long as possible even if this meant getting American military personnel killed.Author and historian John M. Newman has shown how the CIA and American military intelligence were telling President Kennedy and Secretary Of Defense Robert McNamara all lies about the true state of affairs in Vietnam. But they were telling then Vice President Lyndon Johnson the truth about what a quagmire Vietnam had become and would most likely always be. So Johnson knew what was going to happen in Vietnam even before he became president.Fletcher Prouty and also James W. Douglass in his book JFK And The Unspeakable tell how the CIA had infiltrated every aspect of the power structures in Washington, DC. The CIA had their spies collecting information from all the government agencies and telling lies to everyone in the government also.I don't really see a lot in this massive book about the Pentagon Papers to make me doubt those conspiracy theories. The book says JFK continued America's involvement in Vietnam. But the fact remains that when JFK was alive and in office the number of American military personnel in Vietnam was around 16,000. And according to an official government document called NSAM 263 JFK had ordered that all American personnel should leave Vietnam in the near future. Then within a few days after JFK got killed Lyndon Johnson issued NSAM 273 which seems to be a vaguely worded document about the future policy and plans for Vietnam which could be interpreted in many different ways. It's creepy because people say Lyndon started working on the draft for NSAM 273 when President Kennedy was still alive. This book also confirms that there didn't seem to be any real military objectives in Vietnam. The stated objective was to just keep escalating the destruction against the enemy until they got discouraged. But as I said if the conspiracy theories are true the CIA knew all along that this would never happen.

Amazing to read this today, and to still see so many parallels to Iraq and Afghanistan...and possibly North Korea. So much learned, but some much that still remains hidden from the public about the behind the scenes about Vietnam.

This is one of the very best books I've read on the politics surrounding the reasoning behind the decisions made about the start of the Vietnam war. There is no doubt in my mind if JFK had lived, this war would never have taken place. JFK's second thoughts about the direction the war was taking, was one of the reasons Lyndon Johnson and certain organizations within and outside of our Gov't had him assassinated. This opinion coming from a Vietnam combat vet myself and a Vietnam war "hawk"at the time. We were all used by the "military industrial complex"-----just like Eisenhower warned the nation about just before he left office.

Valuable historical documents are available in this book for reviewing how the major events during the Vietnam war transpired. It is more beneficial when this book is read in conjunction with other Vietnam-war-era books for complete comprehensions.

Amazing and one of the best 'what if's' of history. Example of how things can go badly when Govts keep the governed in the dark about policies that harm so many lives. Reading about the meetings makes one wish to call out, wait do not do that, you are swallowing a fishhook.

"The Pentagon Papers" is at once sad, frightening in its detail, and astonishing as the reader witnesses the tragic, misguided decisions made by politicians and military leaders which ended up in the deaths of nearly 60,000 American men and women fighting a non-winnable war.

Having lived thru the war, it is amazing now to have a book with all the years of FUBAR.

Every now and then in my classes, a student(s) will really get 'into' the Vietnam War. I like to give a copy to those who will really value it. My original purchase came when it was first printed...and I won't give that one up. Since then I keep buying and giving. The lessons from this book are many. The Iran Contra Affair is another important 'read'.

Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909, by Michelle Markel Melissa Sweet

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-This picture-book biography of Clara Lemlich, a spitfire who fought hard for better working conditions, is an engaging, informative introduction to her activism as well as to the deplorable state of the U.S. garment industry in the early 1900s. Ukrainian-born Lemlich came to the United States with her parents to escape the Kishinev pogrom of 1903, only to be thrust into another appalling nightmare: the American shirtwaist factories. She began on a small scale to encourage her coworkers to strike, but at a union meeting, when even men wouldn't call for a walkout, she rose and shouted to the large gathering that the time for a strike was now, inspiring tens of thousands of women to leave their stations in the factories. Markel's style is clean and clear, making Lemlich's story accessible to a young audience. Readers are treated to solid information with a buoyant message about standing up for what is right. Sweet has created an outstanding backdrop for Markel's text with a vibrant collage of watercolor, gouache, blank dress-pattern paper, bookkeeping pages, stitches, and fabric pieces. This spirited account concludes with additional material on the garment industry and a solid bibliography. A first purchase.-Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, ARα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

*Starred Review* In the winter of 1909, a brave girl named Clara Lemlich, only five feet tall, picketed for workers’ rights. She arrived in America along with hundreds of other immigrants from eastern Europe, hardly speaking any English. But instead of her father being hired, it’s Clara the factories want, and off she goes to make women’s clothing in a garment factory from dawn till dusk. The conditions are appalling: “If you prick your finger and bleed on the cloth, you’re fined. If it happens a second time, you’re fired,” and more. While the men at the factory don’t think girls are strong enough to strike, Clara proves them wrong, eventually leading the “largest walkout of women workers in U.S. history.” Markel’s informative text buzzes with details of the oppressive conditions and neatly plays up Clara’s can-do spirit, but she perhaps tries to cover too much territory, and as a result, omits some crucial explanations (e.g., why can’t Clara’s father get hired?). However, Robert F. Sibert Medalist Sweet (Balloons over Broadway, 2011) creates punchy, vibrant collages that make up for any shortcomings. The zingy images masterfully (and appropriately) incorporate fabric and stitches as well as old images of checks and time cards. One particularly moving picture is seen from above as row upon row of workers toil away. A detailed note about the garment industry and a selected bibliography conclude. This book has fighting spirit in spades—you go, Clara! Grades K-3. --Ann Kelley

Clara Lemlich is my Grandmother. On behalf of my entire family, I would like to thank all of you who offered such kind comments about her. I can assure you that not only was she a force to contend with in the shops but she was also a wonderful Grandmother as well. Did you know she was a vegetarian, had season tickets to the New York Opera, walked 3 miles everyday and made the best rugelach a grandchild could want!

Get a jump on Women's History Month with this new picture book about Clara Lemlich, a remarkable 20th century labor leader. Picture books about early 20th century Jewish women labor leaders are not exactly published every day in the picture book universe, so I was especially eager to read this new work, illustrated by award-winning illustrator Melissa Sweet, about Clara Lemlich, best known for organizing the shirtwaist makers' strike of 1909.We first meet Clara as she is arriving in the United States, part of the mass of immigrants. But Clara is different--she's "got grit, and she's going to prove it. Look out, New York!"Social justice is an overriding theme of this book, and we see through Clara's eyes the injustices of life in early 20th century America for the impoverished immigrants. "This was not the America she'd imagined." Girls are hired to make blouses for a few dollars a month, wages desperately needed to help support their families. Markel vividly describes the factories in just a few words--only two toilets, one sink, and three towels for 300 girls to share, and better not be a few minutes late or bleed on a piece of cloth if you've pricked your finger or you'll lose half a day's pay or even be fired. But little Clara Lemlich is not one to sit back and take it. She organizes strikes, and despite being arrested repeatedly, and beaten, she is not easily silenced. But she realizes that a general strike of all the garment workers is what's needed to make the bosses stand up and take notice, and at a union meeting, she calls for women to launch the largest walk-out ever.Clara is the leader of the Revolt of the Girls, as the newspapers call it. And eventually the owners meet some of their demands, including a shortened work week and better wages. Markel ends her elegie to Lemlich on a hopeful note, emphasizing how Clara's actions helped thousands of workers. "proving that in America, wrongs can be righted, warriors can wear skirts and blouses, and the bravest hearts may beat in girls only five feet tall."An afterword provides further details about the history of the garment industry, and the role of Jewish immigrants in the business. Strangely enough, Clara is never identified as Jewish in the main text of the book, although she is shown shouting in Yiddish for a general strike. Back matter also includes a selected bibliography of general and primary sources. I would have also liked to have seen something on Clara Lemlich's later life. For example, she continued advocating for the oppressed her entire life, even helping to organize nursing home orderlies in the retirement home where she spent the end of her life.Melissa Sweet's remarkable illustrations integrate the garment industry in a very literal fashion into her depiction of Clara's life. She uses watercolor, gouache, and mixed media, and pieces of fabric and sewing machine stitching are front and center in nearly every illustration. Some of the illustrations are particularly moving, including the one in which rows and rows of factory workers are shown from directly above, with the hundreds of girls appearing faceless and indistinct from each other like cogs in a wheel. I also loved the "girl power" illustration of Clara calling for a general strike--Sweet depicts Clara from behind, with hundreds of people in the audience raising their fists in solidarity and with her call for a strike in an oversized text balloon, with the word "Strayk!" (or strike!) in bright red lettering! This is a must-have for anyone interested in exposing their children to important issues and people in the social justice movement, as well as outstanding women in history, those who chose to try to make a difference in an era when women were encouraged to make their dominion at home.

In my Kindergarten class, we are doing a unit on "Change Makers" which got started with Martin Luther King Jr. I wanted to include other change makers that helped inspire change through non-violent action. I am so excited to be including her in my unit. Nicely illustrated, and simple enough for my 5 and 6 year old students.

Beautiful book, great mixed media illustrations paired with clear writing. It's a bit wordy for a picture book, but works great as a read aloud (which is why I bought it.)

Fun book. My kids really enjoyed it. My daughter is an activist herself and she took it to her room to read and "get ideas."

Donating book to a 2nd Grade class. The teacher has requested books on strong women. I pick a class Every year.

FOR MY GRANDSON...WHO IS BRIGHT AND EAGAER TO LEARN ABOUT THOSE WHO HAVE CHNGED THE WORLD.

I love this book. It is a part of the history of our nation and shows what immigrants had to endure in order to survive. The illustrations are wonderful. I loved this type of book as a child and think that todays children would really enjoy it.

As a Belichick fan, this book satisfied a need in me to understand the man and his approach to coaching an NFL team. This book reveals a less-guarded Belichick and is something unique compared to other fine books I have read. Having said that, this is not for everyone and maybe is better suited for the reader that has already read something about the man and the team, which IMO are one and the same. If not, you may feel 'cheated' by the sparseness of dialog and the cost. This is not a narrative. Instead, it is a series of revelations he gives to reporters on Fridays. Well, duh, but it's maybe not for everyone. That said, it gives insight, but it is helpful to have some context for the would-be reader. This wouldn't be my first read on Bill and I certainly wouldn't pay full bore for it. I do look forward to when he retires and writes the definitive book about his take. Final thought: I would be unsatisfied buying this small/short book for full-bore $ if not a fanatic, and maybe not then.

What it is instead is a series of quotes and responses from press conferences. Its highly repetitive, disorganized and lacking any flow or context. The description calls it a "rare glimpse", "profoundly philosophic" and a "collection of wit and wisdom". I assure you it is none of these things. If you want a 5-star book, try the Ian O'Connor bio on Belichick instead.

Being a long time student and fan of NFL football from the late 40s, I have long recognized Bill Belichick as the GOAT of coaches and this book which chronicles his philosophies and detai oriented strategic approaches to all aspects of football was priceless. I would suggest that the novice should bone up on Bill Belichick by reading the other great books, Patriot Reign, Making of a Coach, etc. to really appreciate this summary from his own Friday press conferences.

Well worth your money and time.interesting tips. Can't wait for a tell all book about him when he retires.

Bought this for my Dad for Christmas. It has all been said before, not worth seeking out.

Interesting perspective as the Coach is more relaxed than normal on Fridays but not a lot of detail and nothing new in here...

Was a giftBut they said they enjoyed it

David Halberstam's Education of a Coach is the starting point for knowing Bill Belichick. As other reviewers point out, this is merely a compilation of his Friday morning press conferences, where Bill often rambles on with thoughts about the game of football, how to manage specific situations, and general coaching philosophy. The unstructured nature of these snippets doesn't make for a good read. Listen to Tony Romo on a broadcast of any game, and he'll run you through most of the situational permutations that will cross the mind of Belichick. I'm a Pat's and Belichick fan. He is a terrific manager, none in the game more thorough, but this one's a snoozer.
