Review

“Robin Wall Kimmerer is writer of rare grace. She writes about the natural world from a place of such abundant passion that one can never quite see the world the same way after having seen it through Kimmerer’s eyes. In Braiding Sweetgrass, she takes us on a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise. She is a great teacher, and her words are a hymn of love to the world.”―Elizabeth Gilbert “Robin Wall Kimmerer has written an extraordinary book, showing how the factual, objective approach of science can be enriched by the ancient knowledge of the indigenous people. It is the way she captures beauty that I love the most―the images of giant cedars and wild strawberries, a forest in the rain and a meadow of fragrant sweetgrass will stay with you long after you read the last page.”―Jane Goodall “With deep compassion and graceful prose, Robin Wall Kimmerer encourages readers to consider the ways that our lives and language weave through the natural world. A mesmerizing storyteller, she shares legends from her Potawatomi ancestors to illustrate the culture of gratitude in which we all should live.”―Publishers Weekly “Robin Wall Kimmerer opens a sense of wonder and humility for the intelligence in all kinds of life we are used to naming and imagining as inanimate.”―Krista Tippett, host of On Being “The gift of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book is that she provides readers the ability to see a very common world in uncommon ways, or, rather, in ways that have been commonly held but have recently been largely discarded. She puts forth the notion that we ought to be interacting in such a way that the land should be thankful for the people.”―Minneapolis Star Tribune “Braiding Sweetgrass is instructive poetry. Robin Wall Kimmerer has put the spiritual relationship that Chief Seattle called the ‘web of life’ into writing. Industrial societies lack the understanding of the interrelationships that bind all living things―this book fills that void. I encourage one and all to read these instructions.”―Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper, Onondaga Nation and Indigenous Environmental Leader

This book changed my life. I have been a gardener most of my life, and have felt a connection to nature even as a city dweller. But reading this book has deepened my experience of the natural world into a much more spiritual level unlike any other book I have read previously. The science is fascinating and understandable; the wisdom is awe-inspiring. It is a book that I open and read whenever I need to plant my feet on the ground again. I can't recommend this book more highly.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Dr. Kimmerer's at SUNY ESF. While there, I took every class she offered. Dr. Kimmerer has the kind of quiet voice that everyone hushes to hear, not wanting to miss a word of her eloquence. Reading this book has reminded me to cultivate my love for the Earth in ways that my daughters can participate in, and to recognize the relationship between people and nature as a two-way street. We do not simply destroy or protect nature - we evolved in direct relationship with plants, and plants evolved in direct relationship with us. As an environmental scientist, I like to think that I look at the world through a lens of love and concern for the earth, but this book pushes me further in love and hope and urgency.

This is not the "type of book" I would typically read, or thought I would enjoy. (I gravitate toward science, and abhor "storytelling). Nevertheless, this book was so highly recommended that I gave it a try. After only a few pages, I realized what a gift had so fortuitously come into my life. I fear I cannot adequately describe its profound essence -- part science, part wisdom, part communicator of the mysteries of animate "objects." All I can say is: read it and experience the magic for yourself. Thank you to all who took the trouble to recommend this book to me. I feel blessed and enriched for having read it.

This goes as a Top 10 Books of All Time in my opinion. Robin grew up in nature, was trained as a scientist, and returned to nature. This book seems to be the story of how she integrated these widely disparate traditions (scientific knowledge vs indigenous wisdom). For anyone who struggles with integrating science and naturalistic philosophy, this book may help illuminate the path along the way.As a medical student training in mainstream hospitals, this book is a lifeline. I read a few pages at a time and take notes along the way. I won't spoil it, but if you are thinking that maybe this book might be good ... it's good.

I cannot give this enough stars, because it would be 10 stars!Robin Wall Kimmerer is an amazing writer offering wisdom teachings from the plants and native teachings presented in a story that is her life's work. This book is a marriage of science based info and wisdom based teachings, and it is a work of art. If you love the planet and have ecology interests, you will love it. If you long for wisdom teachings, you will love it. If you appreciate great writing, you will love it.It is eloquent, sweet, profound and humorous while opening up the eyes of her readers.I thought of sending Trump a copy...This book is a keeper!

If you are looking for a book to make you fall back in love with the earth that gave you birth and nurtured you, if you are looking for a book that examines the great joys (and some sorrows) of daily living, if you are looking for a book that makes you pump your fists in the air and wake your sleeping partner, look no further - this is it! In a time of endless reductionism, rationalism, dissection of working wholes into unrecognizable pieces, and building walls between countries and disciplines, Robin Kimmerer is one of my new heroes: people whom I describe as 'the bridgers' - building bridges of thought, reason and spirit between areas that many are trying to view (and keep) as separate. This book worked at so many levels for me - parenting; teaching; life lessons; how we relate to the world; how we relate to each other; how language can (and does) shape the way we experience the world; what is the essence of 'reciprocity' in living; what gratitude looks like when we live from a place of gratitude; and so much more. This is one book I recommend to good friends with a money back guarantee attached to my recommendation - the book is THAT good! Buy it and enjoy.

I'm glorying in the thought of this gem being required reading for graduates of all ages. What a different world we'd all live in.First, rest assured this is a deeply enjoyable read. Also, this is how any subjects you wish to be understood and loved are best taught: in story.Robin has mastered storytelling. And, athough she is a relatively new weaver, she seamlessly weaves botany, ancient and modern history, humanities, ecology, linguistics and art. And this weaving is made uniquely beautiful by one long perfect strand that passes through every fiber: love.Love translates into beauty in form and function, passion and compassion, peace and contentment, respect and gratitude, effort and sweat,How many times have you found all those (and more) in one book? Reading this book will be an intentional step in the direction of all those things that give life it's purpose.

Beautifully written, as evocative as a deep drought from a forest stream. Kimmer braids together the wisdom learned directly from trees with that learned from the books printed on them. Reading this book is like coming home to where we've always been--nestled in the heart of the Earth that cherishes us, even when we forget that.I would give it 10 stars if I could.
