I loved Peace Like a Monkey. By page 5, I knew that this was the kind of book that I would be sad to finish.I lived in Dar es Salaam for a few years in the ’00s, though not nearly as long as Marya. She perfectly captures my own nostalgia for a country and culture that is warm, hospitable, quick to laugh and full of heart.Marya’s writing is empathetic, insightful and real, without an ounce of self-indulgence. She sees the positive in every situation without sugar-coating. She is funny, but never irreverent.Chapters 8 (Got Placentas?) and 10 (Blood Samples on Filter Paper) should be required reading for any student of global public health. And if you’re thinking about living in a developing country, read pages 4-5 about paying the electric bill in Tanzania, and think long and hard about whether this scenario sounds like fun or torture.Generosity is at the heart of Marya’s writing, and of her soul. I hope that she will generously continue to share her tales of Tanzania, home and human connection.

I bought it because I am going to be in Tanzania next summer. It has some interesting between-chapter information about cultural differences between locals and tourists, but much of this short book is about the author's work with health organizations in Tanzania. Plotkin certainly has a unique perspective on the culture of the country, but be prepared for more medical details than you might otherwise expect.

Marya K Plotkin's Peace like a Monkey is a wonderful reminder of home is where the heart lives be it America or Africa. Mariya has a knack for the autobiographic tradition and sprinkled with a lot of wit and humor. Interspersed with valuable advice like how to rephrase questions in a culture where 'no' is not an answer, her book is a must read for Dar es Salaam residents. It is one of those books you can't put down and read in a day.

This is a great book no doubt about it. Having taken up the guitar at 50 I've been overwhelmed by the "what to" learn books, and underwhelmed by the "how to" learn books. Very frustrating!!! This is the best "how to learn" book I've found so far. Lots of great practice and thought provoking ideas. I loved it so much I bought a hardcover edition to replace my softcover copy (which I gave to my teacher). Recommended!

I was and I am using a beginner guitar; beginner books for learning the guitar (including one that was accidently sold to me because it was intended only for those who were enrolled in the retailer’s classes); and free lessons on the internet. I had my wife buy the book because none of those sources addressed how to practice.This book does exactly that. I learned what practice is, its many components, its cognitive reason for being done. I started doing what is in the book and my progress learning the guitar just took off. I refer to it all the time when I want to improve something in my practice. When I improve that part of my practice, my progress takes off again.To put it another way -- this book is like a stick shift transmission in a car. Be rewarded by not wasting your time on deflating activities.I have spent hundreds of hours working on my instrument in a non-musical way only to be surprised by my sounding non-musical. As soon as I started to listen and learn from the music that inspired me, the theory and technical side of playing was an exciting stepping stone this end goal of actually making expressive music.Highly recommended.

I am reading (for the second time) the audio book version of Jonathan Harnum's "The Practice of Practice". This is read by the author, and it is a very VERY good discussion of learning, particularly as applied to playing music, but with carry-over to any skill. The book links to a web site with an extensive collection of examples and studies, and I liked it so much that I also bought the paper version, so that I could see the illustrations and use the scannable links. I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend this book to all my music-making friends! I suggest the audio book version (Audible) because it has some rhythm demonstrations that are great, and because the author makes the whole topic chatty and approachable. (And I bet you get the paper version, too!)

I bought this book because I practice piano daily. This book gave me great insights into how to structure that. No typical self help cliches, just very original thoughtful and clear writing. It is also about much more than I ever expected. Its about how the brain works, why naps are important, and how to shape good practice. I have recommended or bought this for a number of people who don't play any instrument.

I agree with other reviewers regarding too much filler. Add to that too much name dropping and too many repeated anecdotes. If you distilled the actual practice methodology covered in the book, it would amount to short pamphlet.

For someone who is supposedly smart, Piper is very naive. What the Mackay sisters don't understand is that the males in the family know what kind of monsters are out there. The sisters take their protectiveness as smothering them and not letting them live their own lives. I understand their rebellious nature but when you do something that endangers your safety, that's just stupid and naive. Case in point, Piper running away to NYC by herself and getting the crap beat out of her. I actually felt Dawg's pain when Piper came back bruised and beaten. He felt that he had broken his promise by failing to protect them. Jed is just as dangerous as the Mackay males, he's just better at hiding it. All in all, the story is similar to all Lora's nauti series and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately, I did not read Burton's Riding to Sunset. I purchased this book only for Lora Leigh's novel.

This is actually two stories in one. Both are very good. The first book by Lora Leigh continues with the "lost" sisters and I like where the overall theme went. The only complaint I have is that Dawg is critized so much. I still love the nauti boys but I see how they could be problems for sisters. Anyway, this is Piper's story and I like her already from the very beginning. She is the quiet one and you know what they say about still waters and all. The story line at least takes you outside of Kentucky for where the trouble begins so at least that part was different. Mostly this is about the same as the other books and the sex scenes are good.

I loved this book, matter of Fact I love the whole series Jaci did really good and i am excited for the next installment for this series. I love that family and the girls have some learning to do when it comes to their safety and what they will do to make sure they are safe. I love dawg, natches, and rowdy; I wish I had them around when growing up they sound sexy as hell lbs.

After reading it I see why it took so long since you needed Nauti Tempress to be released first. I was not disappointed.Just left me, anxious for the next book in the series. I haven't read the wild rider series other than the two novellas in the combined books and I was intrigued. Since I got a sense of the characters more in this story I decided to read the whole series.Sorry for my late reveiw just been reading so many books

Riding to Sunset by Jaci Burton - LOVED IT..I've always wanted General Grange Lee to get his own story. He doesn't get a woman but this is about his sister and his niece. The General has hired a new man for the team and after a harrowing mission with Diaz the General ask Jed Templeton to go on a personal mission with him. His sister is missing and while he is looking for her he wants Jed to protect his niece Elena. These two are instantly attracted to each other and seem perfect for one another - problem is Jed is lying about who he is and she has no clue she even has a uncle.It was great seeing most of the Wild Riders at the beginning of the book - miss those guys and their women. It was also great to see a more personal side to the General. Would love more books in this series.Nauti Siren by Lora LeighThis one is part of the new series about Dawg's sisters. Piper Mackay has had it with her brother and cousins over protectiveness that's to the point of smothering them to death. When she gets a letter that a New York fashion designer wants to meet with her in NY she sneaks off without telling anyone where she is going. If you know Mackay women you know this mean they are walking into a world of trouble. Jedediah Booker who's been saying at the Mackay Bed and Breakfast has had a hard time keeping his hands off of Piper while also allowing her to have to space. When things go bad in NY he is the one that gets the call to go and get her.Since this was a short story I was able to enjoy this one more than her full length books of late.

Lora Leigh and Jaci Burton always brings a good product. It is hard, however, to keep so many relatives in mind with the Nautier series. The first three were great. Now it probably should end; goes on for too long. Although there are more sisters so I know it won't.

Over the years I have read almost all that Stephen J. Nichols writes. This book sat at the back of my book shelf for a long time because I wasn't into 18th Century thought and theology. Then Edward's "Religious Affections" hit me and that is when I turned to this book. It is not a Cliff Notes of his thoughts and writing. It is a brilliant and succinct journey through his life, character and family with insightful and crisp comments on some of his most important writings. I learned to appreciate Jonathan Edwards and his gift from God to the us in taking us into the heart of God as probably no other person since the Reformation. Stephen Nichols opened the gate into this rich and brilliant garden of thought and spiritual insight.

Jonathan's life was quite fascinating but he himself is a challenging read. Nichols, however, gives good details about his life and especially breaks down his theological thoughts based upon the writings and sermons he did. This was a manageable read and well done. I gave it a four instead of five because I probably would have liked the biography to be more of a chronological read, but some of that would have been difficult in the chapters that focus on his thoughts. This book may even deserve a five, but I should probably read it again to determine that. I read it in pieces while I was taking a course about him, so this review may be slanted. I have never even seen any other books about Edwards in which to compare this.

Wonderful book

This book is exactly what it sets out to be: a brief tour. It is very short, and the narrative part of it is even shorter. It is a fast forwarded overall history of Edwards. More like like a bullet point outline of Edwards life rather than giving insight on the life of Edwards. The strength of the book is its insight into the way that Edwards thinks. For that reason the second and more applicable half of the book focuses on some of Edwards writings and sermons. It is odd that the choices that Nichols makes about what works to include leaves out discussion on Edwards' Resolutions. The Resolutions would give great insight to how Edwards thought and the unity between his public and private life. The book is thoroughly enjoyable and relevant.

I was reading this book in conjunction with a course entitled "Life and Thought of Jonathan Edwards" offered by the Ligonier Ministries. Jonathan Edwards: A Guided Tour of His Life and Thought by Stephen J. Nicholas was at the same time excellent and disappointing. The disappointment was my fault and in no way reflects upon the book or the author, for I had begun reading it with unfair expectations. I had not read the cover carefully and thus I thought I was buying a short biography of Edwards and that is not what this book is. After I came to realize what the book was intended to be, I enjoyed it thoroughly. And in this way it was excellent. Despite not being a biography it contained all sorts of great information about Edwards and about the events and writings that shaped his life. It is, as it says in the title, a guided tour to his life and thoughts more than a chronological ordering of the events of his life. More than a biography, this is a gateway into the thoughts, writings and theology of this great man of God.In the introduction Nichols writes that the book "is not an end in itself; it is not a substitute for reading Edwards. It is intended to help anyone who, like me, has wanted to read Edwards and even has tried to read him, but needs a little help." It might also be said that this book is not a substitute for reading a thorough biography of the man. Later Nicholas says "My hope is that this book will help you to see the relevance and importance of Edward's thought and that through these pages Edwards will help you, as he has helped so many others, to better understand God, his Word, his work in this world, and your place in it." In this regard, the book and the author succeed admirably.The format of the book is as follows. It is divided into four sections. The first section, comprising two chapters is dedicated to a short overview of his life, from his upbringing in a Christian home to his untimely death from a failed smallpox innoculation. The following three parts, each comprised of three or four chapters, examine his writings and sermons. Part two examines his writings on revival and church life, part three his writings on theology and philosophy and part four several of his sermons. Each is presented in the appropriate historical context and is examined in light of the impact it had in his day and in its ongoing relevance to the church today.This book is a solid entry-level introduction to Jonathan Edwards, and in particular, to his contribution to Christian thought and theology. I give it my recommendation, not as an alternative to his writings or biographies, but, as it was meant to be, a supplement.

Absolutely loved it! The artwork was gorgeous, and perfectly captures the goofy quirks of the boys.Honestly, I was a bit worried going in about how well a largely improvised story told originally through an audio medium would translate, but it works perfectly!There’s a bit of retconning... no spoilers, but it seems like about 85% of it was to avoid copyright issues since “Gerblins” was technically based on an out of the box campaign, but all of our favorite moments are there, in glorious color!The best part though: Vol. 2 is on the way!!!Who is hyped for our boy Angus?!?!?!??

As a fan of the podcast that this is based off of, I can safely say I was both impressed and enjoyed every bit of this book. The one thing people need to understand before going into this is that the graphic novel is a adaptation of the original podcast, not a perfect word for word retelling. And I feel that the McElroys and Carey Pietsh did an excellent job doing just that. The podcast, when it started, was rougher around the edges, and the characters were not fully thought out at the time. With the graphic novel and the fact that the campaign it's based on is finished, it gave the McElroys and Pietsh a solid foundation to work from, knowing where the story is going to go; it was simply a matter of retelling it in a new format. Some small bits (or fluff I would call it) are cut, but did not take away from the plot or felt derailed to me. All the necessary bits are there, and that, to me, is what was important.If you go into this book before listening to the original podcast, just keep all that in mind. Otherwise, I loved this book to death, and I so hope they continue and worked on the rest of the Balance Arc.

The story and art are wonderful, and the paper version is fantastic. Unfortunately, the Kindle version is poorly formatted and almost impossible to read on smaller screens, even on 10" or 11" tablets. If it had been formatted to show only one page at a time, it would have worked better. Maybe this will be fixed in the future. Until then, just buy the paper version; the Kindle version isn't worth it.

I wouldn't have thought a podcast could translate to a comic book, but somehow it happened - and really awesomely. The art is great, the writing is great, of course the story is great! Hits all the plot points (with maybe a name change or two) but it's still so funny. All of the McElroys' voices ring true, which is quite a feat considering that it went from comedic improv/voice acting to a primarily visual medium. The art and lettering only enhance the story, and manage some really great moments that take advantage of the fact that it IS a visual medium. Kudos to the artist and scriptwriter! Fans will not be disappointed! For newbies: it really stands up, and you need no previous experience with the McElroys to enjoy it. And whether you're a newbie or have been a fan for years, you'll be asking, "when can I pre-order the next in the series?!"

Aaaaaa! I'm a huge TAZ fan, and I was anxious that this book wouldn't live up to my expectations. It didn't - it exceeded them! Dynamic, gorgeous art, beautifully bound, with an excellent story adaptation - I'm going to reread this one! It keeps the spirit of the original, while changing only what it needs to for a tight story (...and to avoid copyright infringement. Goodbye Klarg, hello G'nash!).This beautiful graphic novel is a fabulous read for old fans and new. You don't need to know anything about it going in, but if you're familiar with the source material, it's that much sweeter. The inclusion of fanart in the final pages is icing on a pretty, pretty cake. Such a touching tribute to their devoted fans. The McElroys are unicorns in the celebrity world - sincerely down to earth, shockingly kind, and genuinely loving of their fans and each other.I'm so excited for the next chapters! I hope the others do for every story arc what this did for the first one.

If you haven't listened to The Adventure Zone as told through the comedic stylings of the McElroy family vis a vis the Maximum Fun podcasting network, you're missing out on one of the richest, most captivating tales ever woven through the use of Dungeons and Dragons role play. Griffin McElroy takes being a DM to a whole other level, weaving word pictures and creating characters and storylines that will delight and surprise you again and again. Clint, Travis, and Justin respectively bring so much joy and heart through their own characters. I find myself re-listening again and again and still being touched and moved to tears by the same incredible ups and downs of this story. I am so excited to see the rest of this magnificent tale transformed by Carey Pietsch in upcoming graphic novels and I hope you take a chance and delve into this world too! You will never regret it. Wonderful job, McElroys.

Since listening to the Adventure Zone I was inspired to start my own campaign and have gotten my wife and daughter into both TAZ and D&D. I had very high expectations for this book and reading it makes me want to listen to the podcast all over again. The translation took a minute to get used to and I found myself having to reconcile between the two versions. There are some great changes that really made me laugh and I can always listen to the original for the moments that didn’t make it in the book. Carey’s art is FANTASTIC! I can’t wait for the next book!!! Come to Denver for the book tour!
