In the spirit of full disclosure, the daughter who curated and published her mother's letters from Yemen is my neighbor. I didn't know her mom. Also, I didn't really have a clue as to why her mom would be writing letters from Yemen, or where Yemen is, exactly, or why the letters might be of interest. But once I started reading, I couldn't put this little book down. Jean Mondon is a good travel writer, great at describing paintable scenes. She is also a lively and adventurous person: At the age many people retire, Jean decided to spend, without a partner, several years in a tribal village in Yemen working for an NGO as a midwife. I had expected a rather stoic memoir, but there are decided ups and downs, candid admissions of personal and political failings, and touching descriptions of hard-won triumphs in gaining the trust of the village women. In "my" culture, the closest thing to the author is a Mormon missionary, but they go in pairs, live amongst themselves, and have a rule book to follow. Jean Mondon had none of these things. Instead, she had herself, an itch to travel to strange places, and to do what she could to help.
Letters from Yemen gives you an insight in to a world where women have little say about their lives, and where life is harsh. I met Jean Mondon once in Palo Alto, when she was visiting her daughter who is my friend. She told me of being called to help a hemorrhaging pregnant woman and having to have the permission of the Chief before she could go in the house to help her!!! As a doctor, I was horrified. Her letters tell more of this time, and given the current war there, I see her letters as so insightful. Even back then Yemen and Saudi Arabia were not getting along well.Sue and her sister have done a very fine job of editing them, and explaining what happened when Jean got home. Her desire to help others cost her 2 more years to get her own health back! But she got it back and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro after that. She is an inspiration to all women who wish to feel useful in their older years. Do not miss this book.
Letters from Yemen is an enriching read, offering firsthand perspective into the adventure of strong, independent Jean Mondon, and her endeavor to be a positive force in an exotic place. Her triumphs and frustrations are candidly described here, in personal letters to her family. This book addresses a courageous episode in an extraordinary life. There are brief references to her other ventures, and I'd be interested to learn more about this intrepid woman. Her life story would make a compelling movie. These letters, chronicling Mondon's time in Yemen, were published by her daughter, who is, herself, an artistic, inspiring woman with whom I'm very privileged to be acquainted
