Review

“Lilting prose, beautifully meted out folklore and historical references, and Hoffman's deep conviction in her characters (especially those "willing to do anything for love") make reading this "contes du temps passé" a total pleasure.” —Kirkus, starred review"[A] rhapsodic blend of keenly observed historical elements and vibrantly fabulistic invention generates an entrancing saga of sacrifice, forbidden loves, betrayals, and family tragedies endured in a world fractured by religion, class, and race, and redeemed by art and by love. Hoffman is at her resplendent best in this trenchant and revelatory tale of a heroic woman and her world-altering artist son." – Booklist, Starred Review"Hoffman’s subject matter and her evocative writing style are a wonderful fit for this moving story, which illuminates a historical period and women whose lives were colored by hardships, upheavals, and the subjugation of personal desires."—Publishers Weekly“[A] luminous, Marquez-esque tale.” — O, The Oprah Magazine “A fresh tale of human error and achievement. This subject has found the right author at the right time, and no one who reads this story will forget it.” —Book Page“Hoffman’s lush, seductive prose and heart-pounding subject—a forbidden love affair on the island of Saint Thomas—make this latest skinny-dip in enchanted realism by the author of Practical Magic the Platonic ideal of the beach read.” – Slate.com"Hoffman mixes fact and fiction to produce a richly imagined tapestry shot through with her signature blend of folklore, fairy dust and romantic passion." - The Washington Post·“For readers who would go anywhere Hoffman willtake you, this Marriage will only renew your commitment to herastonishing storytelling.” -USA Today“Rich with details that transport readers to a tropical paradise. The Marriage of Opposites invites comparisons to Gabriel García Marquez, but Hoffman follows her own star… Hoffman elevates what could have been little more than a summer getaway book to a work of art.” -Dallas Morning News

The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman is a beautifully atmospheric work of historical fiction set in the 19th century on the tropical island of St. Thomas where the reader learns about the life of Rachel Pomie, who later becomes known as the mother of the famous painter Camille Pissarro, the father of Impressionism, and while I would have delighted in reading a book entirely about Pissarro’s life, his mother’s life is extraordinarily intriguing. I went into The Marriage of Opposites with knowledge of the Father of Impressionism, however I knew absolutely nothing about his mother and here Hoffman shines in her exceptional account of Rachel’s life from childhood through her adulthood, from a young girl dreaming of Paris, to an arranged marriage, through widowhood, and finding true love in Frédérick. I was hesitant that this would be a basic love story, a genre I usually do not enjoy, however Hoffman, the fabulous storyteller that she is, weaves together many forms of love into this absolutely fantastic story, pulling on the heartstrings of readers, while making history come alive in what is researched as well as imagined by such a gifted storyteller. Rachel is not an easy character to always like, however, she is one to be understood, like most people she had dreams that in her day and time were not possible and while she pushed the boundaries of convention at that time and place in history, she also knew her place and her duties. I found the telling of the multilayered characters to be exceptional and Hoffman excels at showing the reader through her elegant prose, the many facets of love. I would highly recommend The Marriage of Opposites to anyone who enjoys excellent literary and historical fiction as well as to all book discussion groups.

Author Alice Hoffman once again succeeds (but only partially) with her lyrical prose, giving us a vivid description of the island of St. Thomas, her pen painting it in water-colored impressionist shapes and hues. Settings are life-like, yet surreal. The reading experience is of stepping into a painting, much like Alice through the looking glass. While plot typically is driven with events, they become minor points. What clearly drives this story is its protagonist, Rachel. Rachel, as a child, vexed her own mother so, that she damned her with the ages-old curse, of someday being tormented by a child like herself. She was a dutiful daughter--to a point--but clearly, lived her life as she saw fit, defying the tenets of her society.Hoffman's storytelling excelled for about the first half of the book. Life on the island, its native inhabitants (slaves and freed men), and the European immigrants were fascinating. Descriptions of people, dwellings, foods, tropical plants, politics, clothing, etiquette, customs, medicinal herbs, and travel all brought the reader into this story of historical fiction. We saw life through Rachel's eyes. Then, without warning, the perspective changed. This was no longer Rachel's story. Hoffman brushed her aside to bring us (one assumes) the real reason she wrote her book; namely to introduce to us Jacobo Camille Pissaro, the father of Impressionism--one of her sons. It left me feeling adrift, as if I were abandoned as the solitary inhabitant of an island, watching the ship on which I was traveling, sailing off without me. Until this moment, this was a five-star book. Then, Rachel's other children were neatly stored away, like so much memorabilia in trunks never opened. As Camille's presence grew, they retreated to ghostly insignificance. Hoffman lost me here. If her intention was to create the background story of Camille's mother, it would have been better done in the form of flashbacks, leaving him as the protagonist. It's not that her writing style and abilities changed, it's that the focus did, and I didn't like it. That dropped my rating to three stars. If you have enjoyed reading Hoffman's other stories (such as The Dovekeepers), you will like her thorough research, style and adroit storytelling in The Marriage of Opposites. Just be aware of the story's sudden metamorphosis into a completely different tale. Hence, a rating of four stars.

In this very atmospheric, visual, historical novel, Hoffman tells us the story of Rachel Pomié and Frédéric Pizzarro. Their son was the renowned French Impressionist painter, Camille Pissarro. From blurbs, I gather that blending in magic, folktales, and romance is a trademark of Hoffman that also makes this novel poetic. My art book club chose this book because it was about Pissarro, but you needn’t be an art enthusiast to enjoy this dramatic story. The book begins when Rachel is a little girl in St. Thomas (early 19th c.). The island with its heat, vivid flora and fauna, and multi-cultural history becomes a main character in the book. She wraps us up in elaborate folktales and religious and cultural background. Most residents speak several languages, including French and Danish. There are still slaves on the island, which is a Danish colony. Rachel’s family is Jewish, so they have their own strict guidelines for behavior and ritual, and Rachel isn’t inclined to accept the rules of others. Yes, there’s plenty of conflict, scandal, and hidden secrets. When Camille is old enough to become interested in art, he shows he inherited his mother’s rebellious nature. The novel shifts toward him as the main character about halfway through the book. Some of the narrative takes place in Paris. The beginning of Chapter 11, set in 1855, the buildup to the Civil War, chilled me: “There was trouble brewing in America, a lawlessness that sometimes portends war.”

First may I say: I am not the target audience. AND I don't want to judge another person's journey.Second: Sometimes a person with ADD can follow another's train of thought better than others. Lean Dunham's train never got near my tracks!Needless to say, I am glad I borrowed it from the library rather than buy it. But there are those out there who will love it so I don't want to discourage anyone from trying it out for themselves. It is nice to see a younger 'sister' learning and leaning in toward her feminist life. Sorry for the troubles she has had along the way. I wish Lean the best in her continued careers.

You know, the former friend from college or high school that you no longer have anything in common with, but who reaches out on Facebook once a year to suggest you “get coffee and catch up.” This usually coincides with some dramatic break up or epiphany she’s had from two weeks spent in a New Mexico sweat lodge. And you think, “How bad could coffee be?” You soon find out as the former friend blabs about her current UTI, chats about her upcoming gyno appointment, details the intricacies of her latest juice cleanse, including how many strawberries go into the juicer, and self-analyzes all the Tinder dates she shouldn’t have slept with but did anyways. This same friend believes her problems would be solved if people just got her intelligence, understood her uniqueness, surrendered to her self-awareness. And after 3 hours of rambling about herself, her cats, her therapist, the rotting milk she left out on the counter, the hole in her sock, the poetry she’s writing about the hole in her sock and the crystal healer she just started going to, she puts down her double macchiato and says, “So, how are YOU doing?”

Before reading this book, I thought Lena Dunham could do no wrong. I love all three seasons of Girls, I've bought magazines I'd never previously read simply because she graced their covers, and I've read all of her online essays. This book is, however, too much Lena. While there are flashes of brilliance in the book, like the essays on the hard-to-define rape she suffered, the teacher who tried to sexually abuse her, and the struggles she's had with being taken seriously by male execs in Hollywood, the majority of the book is filled with musings about her life that are simply boring. I get that Lena believes that standing up and telling your story is the bravest thing anyone can do, but your story has to be interesting in order to be worthy of being published. That's where this book has gone wrong--the publisher clearly thought that anything written by Lena would be lapped up by readers. With each individual essay, her editors clearly didn't step back and ask, 'Is this really worth publishing?'. If they had, the book would be about two-thirds shorter. The title is also misleading, as Lena does not appear to have learned very much, or rather, she doesn't take much interest in imparting her knowledge to her readers. This book has primarily taught me that Lena Dunham is excruciatingly self-obsessed and lacking virtually any self-awareness. She appears to believe that her musings on virtually anything are nothing short of brilliant, no matter how dull and irrelevant the subject matter. The reprinting of several pages of her food diary is perhaps the best illustration of this --a verbatim regurgitation of what she ate for about a week while she was allegedly on a 'diet' (it's really just a pretty standard day's eating for most people) is supposed to communicate what exactly? Her attempts to make even the most mundane interactions with her family appear so powerfully meaningful are odd. The part where she retells a story about how she and her father got stuck in a traffic jam and experienced frustration because, well, they were in a traffic jam is a perfect example of this.In this book, Lena seems consumed by a pressing need to convince you that she feels so many more emotions, so much more intensely than anyone else. She sees quirks and eccentricities in people that others simply cannot comprehend, and you, the reader, need to know that. She is just so brilliant, you guys, don't you see that from all of her deep introspections on how we're all going to die eventually so what's the point?! Lena is so overwhelmed by herself in this book that you can't help but feel like you're suffocating while reading it.This book has killed my love affair with all things Lena Dunham. I admire the work she has done in film and television, no question, and she's an extremely talented writer in both of those genres. I don't think, however, that she can write at the level required to sustain an entire book.I will view Lena Dunham from afar from now on. I've thrown out all of those once-hoarded magazines, and although I still love Girls and will await every new season with much anticipation, I'll watch it from now on with a degree of detachment.

Eh, I love Lena Dunham but I expected something deeper and more intriguing. I can listen to any random girl on the street tell me about how her middle school boyfriend was weird and she gets annoyed with her family sometimes... but I would have liked to have found more in this book that is truly eye opening and impactful. I know she has it in her to provide that sort of insight but it just didn't come through here.

I love "Girls" and Lena. I wanted to like this book. There are amazing sentences, but it is not good overall. I stopped reading it.

Waste of money. Throughout, it is just her saying uncomfortable things nobody wants to hear about her. You would expect it to be funny, but it is not at all.

She's so annoying. I get it you where brought up privileged but you come off as if everything you say is important and the truth. I was a fan but you come off as entitled and whiny.

#3,050,018 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If looking for a clear picture of the people or the country, this is not the book to read. I had been very much looking forward to a recap of the lush lands and amazing people I had experienced during my own time in Fiji. Instead what I found was a self absorbed woman's ethnocentrictic tale filled with hypocracy and judgement. For example, she is deeply offended when one of her Fijian friends takes her toothpaste, but sees nothing wrong with her own theft of toilet paper from a local resort when her funds run low. She criticizes the local people who expect well off family to support them. Yet by her own admission, she lives in Fiji for four years depending on monthly checks from her mother back in the USA. She is extremely judgemental of many aspects of local culture, such as getting upset when people talk about her behind her back. This is despite the fact that she blatantly disregards the mores of the community by engaging in late night drinking parties with men and having sex with some of them, at least one of whom was married to someone else.Beyond all that I found offensive in the content, I was annoyed by the MANY spelling & grammar errors - it was just plain sloppy writing. If you are going to charge money for a book doesn't the author at least have a responsibility to carefully proofread the text? There were a few passages that showed appreciation for the beauty of Fiji, but they often got lost in the comments about the unattractiveness of individuals she met. I get it that she had some difficult experiences during her time on the island. I did not expect only positive descriptions. However the repeated references to people there driving on the "wrong" side of the road (rather than simply the OTHER side from what she was used to) and her blame of those who are curious about her when she comes into their village showed a complete inability or unwillingness to adapt to the culture she chose to be in. In my opinion, this book was not worth the read

I liked the subject since I'm familiar with the area and am debating a similar move. Spelling errors are common but may be do to the format. A good read about some good people.

Not of interest to anyone thinking of living in Fiji. Shallow and a bit silly.

World Peace Through Law: Replacing War with the Global Rule of Law

Review

‘There are four reasons why you should read this book. First, the international system is inevitably being transformed by technology and global integration; this book presents a coherent vision of a successor system that would be superior to others currently on offer. Second, the system it describes is an answer to the perennial objection to eliminating nuclear weapons, which is that there is no better way to prevent war: yes, there is, it says. Third, this book is an encyclopaedic history of things you never knew before about world peace through law and the ‘practical men’ like Teddy Roosevelt, who supported the idea. And fourth, if you think ponderous prose goes with the territory on this subject, think again: this book is engaging, lively, and fun.’ -- James Goodby, Chief U.S. Negotiator for the Safe and Secure Dismantlement of Nuclear Weapons (1993). ‘There is no problem more important than halting the illegal use of armed force to settle international disputes. James Taylor Ranney's book offers the readers a comprehensive historical analysis with possible solutions to contemporaneous conflicts. It is an invaluable goldmine for all students concerned with current problems of world peace.’ -- Benjamin B. Ferencz, Former Nuremberg War Crimes Prosecutor and Peace Advocate ‘A powerful argument that the abolition of nuclear weapons requires a stronger regime for the peaceful resolution of international disputes. Ranney marshals compelling evidence that the world is moving in that direction in any case because of the need for peaceful solutions of the multiplying issues that are arising in global markets and the global commons. The danger from nuclear weapons is so acute, however, that this evolutionary process is insufficient. A more urgent, focused effort is required.’ -- Frank N. von Hippel, Princeton University, USA ‘Just when the vision of a world at peace seems to have faded into obscurity, James Taylor Ranney comes along with an updated version of his classic study 'Peace through Law'. It could also be titled 'Peace is Possible' and will encourage visionaries and convert sceptics.’ – Peter Weiss, President Emeritus, International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms, USA ‘This book is refreshing and a badly needed antidote at a time when hawks with sinister faces tell us that peace and arms control can be threatened by a convention that commits states to non-use and non-possession of nuclear weapons. When the world is spending nearly two trillion dollars a year on means and measures to blow us up, Professor Ranney has the temerity to argue for the ending of wars. He does not grope for a world federation or general and complete disarmament, but rather for reliance on law and moderate and time honoured means such as mediation, arbitration and UN forces.’ -- Hans Blix, Third Director-General Emeritus of the International Atomic Energy Agency ‘In this lively, creative challenge to war - and especially nuclear war - James T. Ranney provides us with a path toward an international system governed by law rather than by violence. Championing arms reductions and dispute resolution, backed by effective enforcement, Ranney outlines a practical way to move toward a more peaceful world.’ -- Lawrence S. Wittner, author of 'Confronting the Bomb' ‘James Taylor Ranney's book straddles a number of subject areas in a creative and very readable fashion. It should be of interest to those interested in international relations, security studies, disarmament, peace studies, dispute resolution and, of course, international law and international organizations.’ -- Roger S. Clark, Rutgers University, USA 'On the basis of lifelong learning and deep ethical commitments, James Taylor Ranney has produced a comprehensive guide to how peace might be secured in our troubled times by a prudent reliance on the mechanisms, institutions, and values of law. Every engaged citizen has an obligation to read this book and ponder its central prescriptions for achieving a peaceful world.' -- Richard Falk, Professor Emeritus, Princeton University, USA ‘This new work merging history, political science, and jurisprudence is superbly clear, accessible and cogent not only for scholars and academics, but also for leaders and decision-makers in governmental and non-governmental organizations, and for all looking to become better informed on how to achieve and maintain peace through the global rule of law.’ -- Kevin Govern, Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law, USA ‘In World Peace Through Law James Taylor Ranney thoughtfully proposes concrete measures that could lead countries to abolish nuclear weapons, establish compulsory international dispute settlement mechanisms, and create effective enforcement mechanisms, including an international police force. Carefully researched, the book analyzes the intellectual roots of the world peace through law concept and explores the efforts of activists and politicians – including many U.S. Presidents, both Democratic and Republican – to realize its core features. The world greatly needs Ranney’s mix of idealism and pragmatism concerning how international law can further the essential goals of peace and security.’ -- John E. Noyes, Professor Emeritus, California Western School of Law, USA ‘In this stimulating, thought-provoking, thoroughly researched, and historically grounded volume, James Taylor Ranney brings together his reflections on world peace through the rule of law carefully and systematically developed over the course of several decades. His argument and seriousness of purpose are enhanced throughout by his candid discussions of the counter- positions of those who disagree with him and his honest acknowledgment that there are ‘many different paths to peace’. Ranney describes himself as a ‘pragmatic idealist’ who is realistic about the weaknesses of existing international law but at the same time optimistic about its future possibilities. Toward this end, he is owed a debt of gratitude for his vision of how the world might move toward future peace.’ -- Paul Gordon Lauren, University of Montana, USA ‘James Taylor Ranney’s book is an important contribution to raising awareness, deepening understanding, and inspiring a new generation of peace activists to campaign for lawful alternatives to organized armed violence around the globe.’ -- Mary Ellen O’Connell, University of Notre Dame, USA

As the U.S. government simultaneously threatens the International Criminal Court for even acting as if it might prosecute the United States for crimes in Afghanistan (a topic “investigated” for years now, while the ICC has yet to actually prosecute any non-African for anything) and (with little apparent cognitive dissonance) uses the implausible claim that the Syrian government might violate a law as an excuse to threaten to violate the supreme international law (that against war) by escalating the killing in Syria, the choice between war and law could not be more stark or critical. This question will be taken up by many talented speakers and workshop facilitators at #NoWar2018 later this month in Toronto. The conference will focus on replacing mass killing with nonviolent prevention and resolution of disputes. Participants can be expected to agree on that much and little else.Has law been used more for war or peace thus far? Has it done more harm or good? Should it be a significant focus of a peace movement? Should it focus on local laws, laws on the national level, on tweaking existing international institutions, on democratizing such institutions, on creating a new global federation or government, or on advancing particular disarmament and human rights treaties? No universal consensus, or anything even close to it, exists on any of these points. But consensus can and will be found, I believe, on particular projects (whether or not there is agreement as to their prioritization) and might be found — and would be very beneficial if found — on broader principles if thoroughly and openly discussed and considered.I’ve just read James’ Ranney’s book, World Peace Through Law. I find myself in as much disagreement as agreement with the details of it, but in far more agreement with it than with the status quo of Western common sense. I think it’s important that we think through some of the details, and press forward together as we’re able, whether or not we agree on everything.Ranney proposes a “moderate” vision that stays far short of the utopia of world federalism. Citing the recommendations, now centuries old, of Jeremy Bentham, Ranney writes that “the prospects of adoption of Bentham’s ‘world peace through law’ proposal are almost literally infinitely greater than world federalism being adopted any time soon.”But wasn’t arbitration, as proposed by Bentham, put into law over 100 years ago? Well, sort of. Here’s how Ranney addresses that in a list of past laws: “Second Hague Convention (outlaws war to collect debt; accepts ‘principle’ of compulsory arbitration, but without operative machinery).” In fact, the primary problem with the Second Hague Convention is not a lack of “machinery” but a lack of actually requiring anything. If one were to go through the text of this law and delete “use their best efforts to” and “as far as circumstances allow” and similar phrases, you’d have a law requiring that nations settle disputes nonviolently — a law that includes a fairly elaborate description of a resolution process.Ranney similarly, but with less basis, dismisses a law that was put in place 21 years later: “Kellogg-Briand Pact (normative principle outlawing war, but no enforcement mechanism).” However, the Kellogg-Briand Pact doesn’t include any of the hedge words found in the Second Hague Convention, or anything whatsoever about normative principles. It requires nonviolent dispute resolution, full stop. In fact the “normative principle outlawing war” — on an actual reading of the text of this law — is exactly the outlawing of war and nothing else. Nothing accurate is communicated by tacking on the words “normative principle.” The need for “machinery,” if not “enforcement” (a troubled term, as we’ll see in a minute) is a real need. But institutions of dispute resolution can be added to the ban on war that exists in the Kellogg-Briand Pact without imagining that the ban does not exist (whether or not one accepts the loopholes purportedly opened up by the UN Charter). Here are the three steps Ranney proposes to replace war with law:“(1) arms reductions—primarily the abolition of nuclear weapons, with necessarily concomitant reductions in conventional forces;”Agreed!“(2) a four-stage system of global alternative dispute resolution (ADR), utilizing both law and equity;” (“compulsory negotiation, compulsory mediation, compulsory arbitration, and compulsory adjudication by the World Court”)Agreed!“(3) adequate enforcement mechanisms, including a UN Peace Force.” (“not pacifism”)Here lies a major disagreement. A UN Peace Force, albeit not appropriately commanded by General George Orwell, exists and has been failing spectacularly since the launch of the war on Korea. Ranney quotes, apparently favorably, another author proposing that this global cop be armed with nuclear weapons. So, that insane idea is new. Ranney also favors the so-called “responsibility to protect” (R2P) the world from genocide through war (without, as is typical, ever clarifying what distinguishes one from the other). And despite the traditional lack of respect for a clear law like the Kellogg-Briand Pact, Ranney offers the traditional respect for R2P despite it not being any law at all: “great caution must be exercised to define very carefully when the new ‘responsibility to protect’ norm mandates intervention.” It mandates nothing whatsoever.Where does this belief in UN war-making for the cause of peace take us? Places like this (the belief in proper illegal occupations): “Despite the opposition of a recent American president, the use of UN troops to assist nation-building is something that obviously should have happened much earlier in Iraq and Afghanistan, now costing the U.S. trillions of dollars, thousands of lives, and gaining us nothing but the contempt of a large segment of the world.” The identification of “us” with the U.S. government is the deepest problem here. The notion that these genocidal wars imposed costs on the United States worth even mentioning in comparison with the costs to the wars’ principle victims is the ugliest problem here — uglier still in the context of a paper proposing to use more wars to “prevent genocide.”In fairness, Ranney favors a democratized United Nations, which would suggest that its use of its armies would look very different from how it does today. But how one squares that with occupying Iraq and Afghanistan I cannot say.Ranney’s support for a global improved-UN war machine runs into another problem raised in his book, I think. He believes World Federalism is so unpopular and implausible as not to be worth promoting any time soon. Yet I believe that handing over a monopoly on warmaking to a democratized United Nations is even more unpopular and implausible. And I agree with the popular sentiment this time. A comprehensive world government able to attempt to restrain the destruction of the environment by homo sapiens is badly needed, while strongly resisted. A war-fighting world institution out from under the thumb of the United States is even more strongly resisted, and a terrible idea.I think the logic of why it’s a terrible idea is fairly clear. If the use of deadly violence is needed to accomplish some good in the world that cannot be accomplished nonviolently (a very dubious claim, but a very widely and deeply believed one) then people will want some control over deadly violence, and national leaders will want some control over deadly violence. Even a democratized United Nations would move control further from the hands of parties that very much want it. If, on the other hand, we believe the data that nonviolence is more effective than violence, then no war machine is needed — which is of course the reason many of us see for trying to get rid of war.Ranney gives some examples of what he calls “strong” international law, such as the WTO, but they do not involve militarism. It’s unclear why a strong use of the laws against war need use war in violation of itself. Discussing enforcement of a nuclear weapons ban, Ranney writes: “a recalcitrant international outlier must be treated in basically the same manner as a domestic murderer.” Yes. Good. But that requires no armed “peace force.” Murderers are not typically dealt with by bombing everyone around them (the justifications for attacking Afghanistan in 2001 being an obvious and disastrous exception to that rule).Ranney also supports as an afterthought what I think ought to be central to this project. He writes: “Not that a UNPF [United Nations Peace Force] ought to be engaged in nothing but the application of force. On the contrary, there ought to be a ‘peace and reconciliation’ force that makes full use of conflict resolution and other nonviolent approaches, something like the existing Non-Violent Peaceforce. There would need to be diverse types of peace forces, appropriately staffed and trained to focus on diverse challenges.”But why make this superior approach a side note? And how does doing so differ from what we’ve got right now?Well, again, Ranney is proposing a democratized U.N. not dominated by five big war makers and weapons dealers. This is a major point of agreement. Whether you cling to violence or not, the first question is how to bring the United States and its allies into the world community of law — including how to democratize or replace the United Nations. But when envisioning a democratized world body, let’s not envision it using the tools of the Middle Ages, albeit with horrific technological advances. This parallels in my mind science fiction dramas in which humans have learned space travel but are extremely eager to initiate fist fights. That’s not a likely reality. Neither is a world in which the United States has abandoned rogue-nation status while the customary interaction between nations consists of bombing people.Getting to a world beyond war without using war to do so is not a matter of personal purity, but of maximizing the likelihood of success.

Despite having access to Lynda.com and Pluralsight.com which both have excellent Maya courses, having a book to highlight, mark the margins and return to as reference is very helpful. I am moving from 3DS Max to Maya 2018 and I wanted a book to gel the core concepts of modeling and shading, as well as animating, rigging, constraints... in Maya.Other than changes from 2016 to 2018 Maya, primarily a change in renderer (Mental Ray to Arnold), as well as MASH (unlikely to be covered in an intro book), this book applies well to Maya 2018.I found the book very practical, with interesting projects that could be completed in a reasonable amount of time, and reinforced key concepts. I would recommend this book for anyone new to Maya or moving from another 3D software package. I would have given this book a 5 star rating, but the picture quality in the text is poor. This is likely a combination of the printing, as well as image contrast and magnification. Some of the topics are complex (e.g. UV Mapping, rigging) and poor images make the topic more difficult to follow. There had at one time been videos online to demonstrate the content, but only a few can still be found on YouTube. My only other comment relates to efficiency. I wondered why the author created a "virtual studio" of planes for modeling, instead of using the built in image plane functionality. With the image planes you simply import an image for top, front, side views (and move them back -100 in their respective planes). Instead he has you build this from scratch. In the same vein, short-cut key creation could have been introduced for some common repetitive menu tasks such as center pivot, delete history, freeze transformations. In summary, this is a very well written book and I would highly recommend it, despite its being outdated for the 2016 version of Maya. As far as I can tell, it was updated for more than a decade of revisions since 2004, and its content appears to have greatly benefited from both revisions as well as the authors own extensive experience. It would be a shame if Sybex and Autodesk let this book fall into "out of print," even when online tutorials have largely taken over. If they do print a sequel in the future, I would recommend they improve the printed image quality (which by the way, was just as poor in the Kindle versions of their Mastering Maya book).

Great guide to Autodesk Maya! My only thought - a Glossary in back would be very handy. I'm new to 3D work, and would've liked a "quick reference" to the many unfamiliar terms and expressions.

Easy to find subjects and well organized. I recommend it. Despite I am a Maya LT 2018 user, until now, I found all I needed.

This book is the one for getting underway with learning Maya. This one will lead you to the more complete and thorough book Mastering Autodesk Mays 2016.

I'm learning Maya 2016 and 3D modeling and this is an essential resource for anyone else doing the same. Would definitely recommend Dariush's book!

Great book for someone just learning. A little harder to read for my daughter but together we are getting through it well.

Still in the middle of reading it. But It has a lot of good information

Good book to read.

Gospel Assurance and Warnings (Recovering the Gospel), by Paul Washer

Review

Few things are more important than the question of the assurance of our salvation. The dangers of false assurance are obvious, and Scripture warns us that the number of falsely assured in churches is legion. The tragedy of the unnecessarily troubled is that they never gain the footing that produces the fruit of the Spirit and compels great acts of obedience. Just as I would want my children to know for certain they are mine, God wants His children to know that they are His. Washer has provided a great and thorough resource for those wanting to plumb the depths of the question Am I really saved? and to teach it to others. This book is loaded with scriptural analysis and pastoral advice. It is a necessary book for the library of anyone entrusted with the care of souls. --J. D. Greear, PhD, author of Stop Asking Jesus into Your Heart: How to Know for Sure You Are Saved and Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity RevolutionaryPaul Washer has given us a tremendously helpful tool to seek solid assurance that we are saved from sin by God's grace. The Word of God is like a mirror for self-examination. The Epistle of First John particularly helps us examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith. Washer applies 1 John in a masterful way to this question, explaining a dozen marks of saving grace in the soul. At the same time, this book does not encourage us to rest on our past experiences but to press forward in spiritual growth in dependence upon the Spirit of Christ. Here is sweet help for God's children struggling to enjoy assurance of their Father's forgiveness and acceptance. And here is a sober warning to the self-deceived. May God use this book for His glory to the comfort of His people and the conversion of lost sinners. --Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

It should come as no surprise that misunderstandings about the gospel message and the nature of true conversion result in a problem with genuine assurance of salvation. A pseudo-gospel of "easy believism" has led many into careless presumption, and a poor understanding of salvation has abandoned tender consciences to near spiritual despair. In Gospel Assurance and Warnings, Paul Washer shines the light of gospel hope as he cautions against the dangers of making an empty profession of faith and carefully explains from Scripture the basis for establishing and maintaining a sound assurance of faith. Author Paul Washer ministered as a missionary in Peru for ten years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society (www.heartcrymissionary.com). He and his wife, Charo, have three children: Ian, Evan, and Rowan. Endorsements "Few things are more important than the question of the assurance of our salvation. The dangers of false assurance are obvious, and Scripture warns us that the number of falsely assured in churches is legion. The tragedy of the 'unnecessarily troubled' is that they never gain the footing that produces the fruit of the Spirit and compels great acts of obedience. Just as I would want my children to know for certain they are mine, God wants His children to know that they are His. Washer has provided a great and thorough resource for those wanting to plumb the depths of the question "Am I really saved?" and to teach it to others. This book is loaded with scriptural analysis and pastoral advice. It is a necessary book for the library of anyone entrusted with the care of souls." J. D. Paul Washer's most recent book Gospel Assurance and Warnings (the third book in his series Recovering the Gospel) is an incredible read. Never have I read a book that was more thoroughly Biblical and timely than this book! With a watered down gospel being taught throughout America there has been a rebirth of "gospel-centered" books over the last five years. Some have been well done, others have been just the same old moralism that American Christians have bought into for years. The gospel says (to borrow from Timothy Keller) you are more awful than you ever thought possible but you are more loved then you ever dreamed. The gospel makes us see how wretched we are, but God's love shows us how amazing He is and how awesome a gift His love is. Paul Washer's books are by far and away the best books on the topic of the gospel. Not a page goes by without a Bible verse and a gem of a thought by Washer. I started underlining all the amazing portions of this book and I found I was underlining everything. I will come back to this book over and over again as I teach those around me about the gospel, as I try to live out the gospel and finally as I lay down at night and the dark doubts attack me, I will rest in the truths that his books have brought to life that were always there in the Bible, but I was too immature and blind to see. This book is broken into two parts. Part one deals with how to know that we are saved, the assurance of our salvation. This is where Washer is really shows his skill as an expositor. He takes 1 John and walks us through what it means to be an assured follower of Christ. He blasts those who have "prayed a prayer" thus they are saved, as well as those who have "put their stamp of approval" on anyone who believes the magical prayer actually is the end of the gospel. He attacks the thought that the gospel is something for new Christians and that we move past it as we mature. Instead he points out that the gospel is all of what it means to be a Christian. He does all this while giving some great insight into 1 John. If I ever preach through 1 John I will surely use this book as a key part of my teaching. Part two deals with warnings for those who would change the gospel into easy believism. Washer walks through key portions on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew's account of it) to explain Jesus' warnings for those who change His gospel. His chapter entitled Gospel Reductionism is the most powerful and moving chapter as he lays out how many in the church, yours truly included, have changed the gospel into something it is not. This part was also very well done, and I was moved by each chapter. Convicted about my attitude toward the gospel (both in the past and the present) and humbled by Washer's plain talk about the Bible and his encyclopedic knowledge of our Lord's Word. This book is a book I will reread over and over again. If you are passionate about following God's Word and setting out a correct picture of the gospel then you need to purchase this book. And while you are at it buy the other two books too.Five stars (only because I can't give it six)

4/5 - recommend to anyone who is questioning their assurance of salvation and anyone wanting to learn more about the gospelWhat I liked:Similar to the other two books in the series, starts every chapter with a verse and then discusses the Greek or Hebrew translation. He then exegetes the verse as it relates to assurance. The book is fully of Scripture, well over a thousand references. It is a solid theological exegesis of verses dealing with assurance. What I did not like:Having read this series of three books back to back, it became very repetitive. This book not only repeated ideas from the previous volumes, but also repeated the same idea within the book. This is to be expected with the way the book is set up — using a systematic exegesis of verses that builds on itself every chapter... but as a reader this becomes wearying. Each chapter is probably best used as a reference in the future and will be an amazing resource.

So timely for this nation and world as a watered down Gospel (which is no Gospel at all) is being increasingly propagated, and evangelized with. I love how clear Mr. Washer presents his case and the level of discernment he exercises when discussing a subject (false and true peofessions of faith ) that most do not like to deal with. I've experienced first hand many who have walked away from the Lord and have yet to return and this book gives me an even greater passion and desire to pursue them with great eagerness.

Paul Washer's knowledge of the Holy writ is second to none. He explains the Gospel and assurance of eternal life in a clear and understandable way which most Christians do not have the ability to do, or even understand. And, what is not talked about in modern times are the awful warnings that the Bible conveys to those who would treat the Gospel of Christ in a false and apostate manner. Mr. Washer pulls no punches about what the Bible says, and points out the awful warnings to those who would demean or take lightly the Gospel of Christ.

I would recommend this book,'Gospel Assurance & Warnings' to anyone who is serious about wanting to delve deeper into the true meaning of being a Christian. The 'Recovering the Gospel Series' are the best study books on true Christianity since C.S. Lewis and Charles Spurgeon. A sobering warning to the falsely assured, a sweet assurance to those of genuine conversion, and an enlightening guide to those who seek to understand why salvation is needed. Truly an inspirational work. Buy this one, you won't be sorry.

Thank God for Paul Washer! He doesn't hold back. I wish every man who stands in a pulpit would read some of Paul Washer's books!
