An Interview with Gayle Forman Q: You started your career as a journalist and your first book is a travelogue about going around the world. Is YA literature a departure for you? Gayle Forman: Actually, it’s more of a homecoming. My first writing job was at Seventeen, where I spent five years on staff and as a contributor reporting the magazine’s social-issues stories. I loved writing for teens then because—contrary to popular opinion—they really care about serious issues (from child soldiers in Africa to kids embroiled in the drug war here) and the engage in their reading with such passion. So, now that I’m writing young-adult literature, it feels like I’ve come full circle. Q: This book explores some serious themes. Why is this a book for kids and not adults? GF: It’s a book for kids precisely because it explores serious themes. Teenagers are grappling with choices about life and love as much as adults, so why shouldn’t their reading reflect that? I don’t set out to write YA. It just seems like I’m drawn to stories about young people. That said, I think If I Stay is for adults, too. I love the idea of teens reading this book and then handing it off to their parents. Q: Many key characters are serious musicians, and songs are referenced throughout the book. Are you a musician? GF: No. Except for piano lessons when I was a kid and a brief spate of guitar playing in my teens, I’ve never played an instrument. I am, however, a huge music fan. And my husband is a musician; he was playing in a punk band when we met, so I’ve spent a lot of my life ensconced in that scene. I seem drawn to writing about musicians, though I’ve never been all that interested in the cello until Mia popped into my head. Q: What inspired you to write this book? GF: Music. Oregon. This book was the most recent choice for our book club. It was ripe for discussion as to whether or not the right decision (to stay or not to stay) was made, and why. While this book would be enjoyable for a singular reader, the points of view that emerge from discussing this book in a group greatly enrich the experience. For those that had seen the movie before reading the book, some of the additional details and information given in the book made the decision that was ultimately made make more sense to them. Our book club is going to watch the movie together soon and then discuss it again! :)

I must say that i liked Where She Went much better than If I Stay. Am i allowed to say that? The second book usually isn't as good as the first book. If I Stay was all about death and Mia being in a Coma the whole time, and wondering if she should live or die. I couldn't handle that.It’s been three years since the accident that took away Mia’s family. Adam is a huge rock star now. His band Shooting Star is making albums, winning awards, and touring the world. Adam should be living it up, but he is no longer the same guy he was. His life is the shadow of what it should be and it all traces back to the accident that changed everything he believed in. He's a broken guy no longer in love with the music he used to eat, sleep and dream about. Instead he is a guy just floating by. A random chance encounter in NYC changes everything. The past that Adam thought was over and had left behind is suddenly right in his face leaving him no choice but to deal with his demons and decide if the past should be left in the past.Where She Went is told in Adam's POV which i absolutely loved. I felt so bad for Adam. He was so heartbroken after Mia left, and i could really feel his pain. I was really mad at Mia for leaving him like that, but after reading further into the book I understand why she did what she did. I also liked that in the beginning of the chapters were Adam's lyrics to the songs he written. This book was just so beautifully written and it's an absolute must read.

There are certain books that just emotionally drain you, and this was one of them. There are moments of sadness, moments of happiness, moments of pain, and moments of sweetness. It is a book whose story just stays with you.I love the way the story of If I Stay is constructed. It is told from Mia's point of view, but it isn't just her version of the present. Instead, it travels back and forth through her history and those of the people she loves. This gives the entire book a bit of a bittersweet quality, as you experience loss with Mia. You are a part of her world after the fact and it makes the present all the sadder. It is a story of. a girl with an incredibly quirky and fun family, a snarky best friend, and rocker boyfriend who represents everything she herself is not.Mia's family is built on music and love. Her dad was a former punk rocker and her mom his biggest fan. Mia's boyfriend Adam was a rocker whose career is growing even before he finishes high school. And then there is Mia, the classical music loving cellist who is on her way to great things. But, in a single moment, everything changes for her and for her family.The author doesn't shy away from the tough situations or questions that arise from Mia's personal tragedy. Instead, she makes Mia and the reader question themselves about fanily and choices. What is a family? How do you choose when faced with such diverse choices?This is a book about family and tragedy and unthinkable choices, but it is also a story of beauty. It speaks of the bonds between those we love. And with these themes, there is also the love between Adam and Mia. Their romance was beautiful, sweet and passionate. It was music that brought them together, no matter how different the two expressed it. And it was their differing musical genres that often threatened their relationship as their music took them in very different directions. I liked that their relationship was portrayed realistically. Instead of painting everything as perfect, it touched on problems and dischord.The interesting thing, however, was in how I related to Adam and Mia. If I Stay was Mia's story, but it was Adam that I identified with the most. There were moments during flashbacks where I felt like Mia was unfair or too demanding and it was Adam who was the sympathetic quality. And Adam's pain and anguish and selfless love was beautiful to watch. I watched the movie shortly after finishing the novel and I felt the same way for most of it, as well.My Recommendation: If you like a good, emotional read that isn't all perfect happy endings, then this is an excellent read. The story is beautiful and sweet, even as it is tragic and sad at times.

The premise of the story intrigued me, but that wasn't a huge part of the book. Most of the book is about Mia's back story, her relationship with her parents, her best friend and her boyfriend, her love for the cello, etc. I was surprised at how strongly the story impacted me- it really made me examine my own life on a deep level and I found myself crying on several occasions. I'm quite surprised this is considered a YA book- even though the main character is a teenager, I found the themes resonated with me at age 49. The writing is also superb- I haven't read a book this good in a long time.The only criticism I have- and it's a mild one- is that the "present-day" events, and what Mia goes through as she makes her decision, are not developed to the extent I thought they would have been. After all, it's the original premise of the book- you expect the character to go through a lot of struggles to decide whether to return to life or not. And in the end, you don't see her actually make the decision- it just kind of suddenly happens, and then the book is over. Perhaps not surprising since it leads you to immediately want to read "Where She Went" to find out what happens next. And honestly, the book was so good that I didn't even realize the life-or-death decision hadn't been explored fully until the book was over!

I love all things coloring and all things journaling. I couldn’t wait to receive the NIV Wonders of Creation Bible. I have an adult coloring book that is called Wonders of Creation and this looked similar. I was correct. It is basically some of the same illustrations.I have several journaling bibles and coloring bibles. I love them all and the Wonders of Creation Bible is no different. I love it too. I will say this is not a journaling bible there isn’t anywhere to journal at all so just know it is only a coloring bible. One thing that specifically stuck out to me is the pages that are coloring pages are much thicker than you expect in a bible. I really like this about this bible, the pages are almost as thick as card stock. Some of my coloring bibles the pages are so thin you can see through them. I wish more publishers would make the coloring pages thicker.The images are quite whimsical not realistic looking animals and but very fun. The spaces are larger and not so intricate that it would make it difficult to color. I haven’t tried yet but I’m thinking a water based marker would probably work without bleeding but test to make sure. There is a bible verse included with each picture so that you can ponder the Word as you color and relax. There are over 50 pages to color.I would think this would make an excellent bible for a teen or pre-teen girl. The lettering of the bible is quite small I have a hard time reading it without readers. The bible isn’t a study bible of sorts, there are no notes or study verses as you go. There are no reference pages or concordance included. If those things are important to you then you may want to stay clear of this bible. Otherwise I found this bible enjoyable.I received this bible at no charge from booklookbloggers in exchange for an honest review..

At 65, I have been a student and teacher of the Bible for almost 50 years. I wish I had had this for all those years! The issue and complaints of lighter print on the page notes almost kept me from buying it. But much to my surprise, with my older eyes, I can read it just fine. Do not let that keep you from buying this gem. One aspect the author brings out is the comparison between man's mythical beliefs of the day and God's work. Lately there have been many books bringing out Hebrew culture in Jesus' day and giving further understanding to the New Testament. It is said best on the back cover "see the cultural background behind each story". This version does the same for the Old Testament as well as New. I have recommended this to all my friends

I've been so excited to get this bible which is pretty cool because it's been a while since I've been excited about reading the bible. Lots of reviews had me wary about hard-to-read text so I almost didn't buy this, but it just arrived and either the other reviews have poor eyesight or they changed the print due to the complaints. I flipped thru and took a few photos and don't see an issue. Text looks legible to me!

I am an older reader and the print is just too light to be comfortably read. Content may be excellent, but why or why did you ruin it with the light print? I had planned on purchasing several copies, but after looking at the ink, there will be no extra purchases. I have told my friends about the light print and they all agree that they will avoid the purchase. Sorry, but it ruined the whole thing for me...and my friends.

I own both John Walton’s and Craig Keener's Bible Background Commentaries and found them both very helpful. A study bible with this kind of info tickled my fancy.I have grown to become particular on the print Bibles I purchase. As a graphic and web designer, I know how much print quality effects the ease of reading. So I did my research and found a sampler PDF by Zondervan of the print Bible. Everything seemed good (notes were dark enough because of being viewed on a monitor) but you never know how the final product will look. Factors like paper quality, ink quality etc. really determine the final outcome.On receiving the bible I have to admit I am very disappointed. Many things were okay but when I looked at the note sections of the bible I was not a happy camper. Zondervan used a thin-weight sans-serif font, very small (5 or 6pt ?) that is very difficult to read. Because of the thin weight of the font, the print color looks like a medium gray. In bright light the glare off the paper competes with it but without some sort of direct light it is very difficult to read. Also, the paper is thin enough that the occasional colored illustrations on the reverse side of the page bleed (ghost) through and make legibility even more difficult.The content of the notes and articles are top notch. No complaints there. But if you can’t read the notes without squinting, what’s the point? My hope is this study bible can be redone at some point to increase the legibility.Other things of note, I also wish the size of the NIV text was a tad larger. Bumping it up to 9.5 or 10pt font size would be ideal. Yes, I know that would increase the size of the book but as is, this study bible is on the large and heavy size already. You’ll probably not be toting this around to church or the office.I could do without the red lettering myself. I know many people like it so I’ll back off on that. Red lettering is often hard to read in large doses (try John 14-17) and sometimes turns to a dark pink.So what to do? For the note section, having the Kindle version may be better. Amazon often does a thing called MatchBook where if you buy the print version of a book you can get the Kindle version greatly reduced. No such luck here so many buyers will need to choose between the Kindle version or the hard-to-read print bible.I looked at the sample Kindle version and can say I am not impressed. Kindle bibles have notoriously ugly text. The main culprit is the superscript verse numbers which are often not formatted correctly and thus increase the line spacing (leading) of the lines they are on. The text then becomes choppy and irregular with the mishmash of different line spacing. You’ll get that here.The notes, however, are in different sections and layout perfectly fine. So you will be able to bump the text size to whatever is readable for you. Plop that besides you while reading your bible and you’ll be good to go.In conclusion, I wish Bible publishers hired better print and layout designers for their bibles. This trend of small font sizes, thin bible paper and compact bible sizes doesn’t make for very readable bibles these days.Update: sent back the print version study bible before my allotment time is up. On pages where there are predominantly notes, not the biblical text, I just plain can't read the mass of medium gray text without a magnifying glass. I have what I have suggested below (the comment section) and is working great.

This is a work of art in design layout. The photography is beautiful and the style of images is consistent. It gives great ideas about composition and technical details (lens used, aperture, shutter speed, ISO) in the images that illustrate each subject.It is a great idea book for beginners on photography as the examples have a clear message of great composition. I would put this book in the category of inspiration.

When it comes to photography books, the better ones typically fall into one (but only one) of these categories: strong on technical info, strong on inspiration and/or theory, or strong on sample images. Happily for me, this guide excels on all three counts! The images are stunning, and the accompanying text gives not only the actual camera settings, but also specific tips on working your subjects into the illustrated poses, suggestions for ALTERNATE ideas in the same setting, and practical "housekeeping" tips (such as warming a surface with a warm heating pad to make it comfy for baby). The book is arranged in sections according to age, number of subjects, and relationships. I can honestly recommend this resource without hesitation! It will surely be one of the most-used books on my shelf. Oh yes, it's also beautifully produced.

I purchased this with high hopes and it met my expectations. I love it’s simplicity and the poses are cute not overly used poses. I recommend this to anyone looking for inspiration!

This is the best posing guide I own. Great photos with ideas on other poses that could be done with the one shown. She also includes a description of the light at the location, what lens was used, and all camera settings. There is even a note on the pictures that were edited after the shoot. No negatives about this book! (No pun intended)

Great book for photographers or just hobbiest looking to improve posing with children. This book guides you through getting those natural shots that moms love so much and capturing those raw moments you are proud to put in your portfolio. If your considering order this book do it. You won't regret it.

An ok guide... nothing great and 99% using natural light (lots of reflector usage with no diagrams), which is ok but also limiting in some ways. More of a picture book of poses with very few "new" ideas. It's nice that they tell you the lenses used and most are common to the (Canon) pro gear bag... lots of 24-70mm and 50mm f/1.2, some 135mm and then there are some ridiculous $5-10k lens photos (namely the 300mm f/2.8 and 200mm f/2.0) I own all but the 300 f/2.8 and I'd have to say they would not be necessary for the images shown. Most of the lenses used are in the $1-2k range and you could easily use a $200 50mm fast prime... maybe a 1.8 or 1.4. Aside from the poses I think the takeaway message from this book is shoot in the shade/overcast day or with the late setting sun at your subjects back when outside. If inside look for window light. From this aspect your shooting location and posing choices can be very limiting. There are some good tips for shooting with children like asking permission to touch a child before posing them or keeping a parent just out of frame to prevent a child from rolling off a posing prop or when near a street. Pretty common sense but if you're not experienced it's good advice. Overall I'd have to give this book a "meh"... not bad but not good. Good for a mom or dad looking for a little inspiration. If you've been doing child portraiture for some time... save your money and look elsewhere.

I was hesitant to buy yet another photography book (I have several) but I have such a high respect for Lena Hyde in the photography community I could not pass this up. I was not disappointed!! I have been a photographer for over 4 years and this book has such a refreshing view on posing and so much more. The pages are laid out so simply that you can just pick it up and flip to any page and get great tips! No need to read cover to cover. This book will stay on my coffee table and probably in my car on the way to shoots:) and not in a drawer or my shelf.This book is also great for moms who would like to take better pictures of their own kids and families! It's not too basic and not too advanced. Once again the Design Aglow team comes through for all photographers in all stages of their ability!!

I love to read cookbooks, and I read a lot of them. Most have the same type of recipes,there are few original foods, at least few that are appealing. This book is filled with wonderful and original recipes. The Mennonite girls CAN cook!!! There aredelicious baking recipes. I am not a baker----but I am tempted to try some of these.I like meat, veggies and pastas if I am moved to cook. There are plenty of these also.As a bonus, if you are interested, each section is introduced with a story about faithand appropriate scriptures. I use this as a daily devotional. It encourages me to have adevotion on a day I am probably neglecting to do so. All of the profits will go to feedhungry children. This is NOT a book of recipes done by a group of women who combined recipes and printed. The book is professionally presented. There are lovely nature pictures, devotions, and fabulous recipes.

Celebrations is written by the women of Mennonite Girls Can Cook. This is their second cookbook, and it is such a beauty. I got their first cookbook about 5 years ago for Christmas and ever since I've been a fan! First, let's take a look at the cover. I am a lover of books, but am especially a lover of pretty books. This one is absolutely stunningly gorgeous! The above picture shows the book jacket and it is so delightful to look at. Then, the picture below shared what the hardcover of the book looks like, and it is equally splendid. When you remove that book jacket, it's like uncovering a treasure of something pleasing to the eyes.This book is full of delicious and scrumptious recipes ranging in cakes to appetizers and main dishes to tea time favorites. There is such a huge variety to choose from and each recipe has easy to understand directions. Every recipe also includes both the U.S. measurements and metric measurements, which I personally find extremely helpful. I love the fact they went the extra mile and included both sets of measurements!In this book are some of the most gorgeous photographs I've ever seen. The photos almost come off the page, invite you into the moment and celebration, and whisk you away for a bit of peaceful pleasure.The Mennonite Girls are made up of a group of ten women. Each woman contributes recipes, stories, reflections, wisdom, and other thoughts throughout the book. This truly does give the book a real personal touch. It is so much more than a cookbook. Really, it's a book of wisdom and godly reflections and stories beautifully written by women of godly example. It's a book sort of written in the spirit of Titus 2 if you ask me, and I love that. And, you know, it just so happens to contain some yummy recipes to try as well!This book is divided into themes:Celebrating BirthCelebrating ChildhoodCelebrating MarriageCelebrating FamilyCelebrating OutdoorsCelebrating CommunityCelebrating HospitalityCelebrating MilestonesCelebrating HolidaysCelebrating LifeEach section contains different recipes suitable for that occasion, celebration or season. The book is filled with excellent recipes. Every recipe I've tried has turned out great, and my family has loved the food. My only challenge with this book is how it's organized. It's sectioned by the type of celebration. I can see using recipes indicated for one type of celebration in another, which makes navigating the book a little less intuitive. That said, it's worth perusing the book to look for recipes, whether for a celebration or for some good old home cooking. I'm using several at an upcoming graduation party I'm cooking for. I am now a Mennonite Girls fan.

One of my favorite cookbooks, and I keep it out in my kitchen to use it regularly. My family is so happy I bought it. Whenever I make something delicious, they ask me if the recipe came from my Mennonite cookbook. Some of the recipes are for big quantities, but you can cut them in half quite easily. I've also adapted some of the bread recipes for my bread maker, using the dough cycle and cutting the recipes in half. We're fans of the Mennonite Girls!

My husband and I recently moved to a Mennonite town and one of our neighbors brought us Zweiback to welcome us. Another has been talking about making green bean soup. And all over town, there are meals advertised with foods we have never heard of. I decided to order this book to try my hand at some of these great recipes, and they are wonderful. I love the recipes in the book, as well as the "devotional" items that are included. I also think that it is wonderful that these ladies donate all of their royalty fees to feeding hungry children. It is a great recipe book that helps a great cause.Many people mentioned that found the metric measurements confusing, I for one did not. They are separated by a "/".I decided to order more of these books to give as gifts.

I enjoyed the cookbook very much, but so not bake a great deal and this book is a bakers dream. I would like to have had more vegetable and main dish recipes. The photography and text are excellent and the women in the book are from many diverse situations. Fun book.

I love this book. I'm not a security professional, just reading it for fun. It's great reading for fun.I especially like all the examples. If you already work in the space, you already know WHY any of this is important. If you don't, then leaving those stories out really makes the subject matter dry and irrelevant. Including it really hits home as to why security is so important to all of us, and it makes the solutions much more intriguing.The author explains things in layman's terms, so although this is a very broad and complex topic, it's very accessible through this book. I also love the author's approach of introducing you to *all* the relevant concerns of security, and then giving you references if you want to learn more (including problems that haven't been solved yet).One thing I found interesting was that having the advantage of living 10 years beyond the end of the book, it becomes clear that many of the current hot topics in security have been predicted by security experts for years. For example, Google just found the first SHA-1 collision, and in the book, Ross reported that an algorithm has been developed to find a collision in 2^69 steps, but it was predicted that it should be possible in 2^60 steps. 10 years later, as I'm reading the book, Google reports they did it with 2^63 computations.If you're a professional, you probably already know all the important stuff from this book. So depending on what you're looking for, it might not be the book for you. If security is this mysterious, complex thing that feels like it's beyond your reach, you'll love this book. It's not like "heads first" security where it just flies by. You may find yourself slogging through the thousand or so pages over a series of eye-straining months. Your husband might get used to seeing you making pained faces around the house while looking at the ceiling as you try to understand something. But it's still fun. Oh also sometimes the author is unexpectedly sarcastic, and that's really fun, too.

I understand the ISSAP concentration requires detailed knowledge of the inner workings of many technical systems (and not just those normally administered by security professionals). To pass this exam you not only need to retain that knowledge, but know how it all works in minute detail.A long foreword, but the point being stumbling across this book has been a lucky break. Ross dives into security engineering at the street level and comes up for air only to relate real world cases of security failure and how they can be avoided. Not only does he get down to the detail level required on much of the CISSP-ISSAP curriculum, his book is heavily weighted in the technical control fields that are core to the ISSAP exam.If you’re tasked with engineering security controls in any information system or joining me in studying for the ISSAP concentration I highly recommend this read.This book was published in 2010 making it currently 7 years old. This means there are some glaring exemptions from his review of historical security failures and a bit of weakness in mobile, social and cloud. It should be noted that. Despite being 10 years out of date many of his observations seem eerily prescient given what has occurred during the intervening interval and although lacking in examples pertaining to Social Mobile Analytics and Cloud – he accurately predicted the systemic issues encountered in these areas proving good fundamental coverage still useful in 2017.Trailing note. This is 1080 pages - if you're expecting a casual read look elsewhere, while Ross does an excellent job of keeping this digestible be prepared for some focused attention on every passage.Ross A++
